Simple question. What are your favorite three scores thus far this year? Mine are:1. Phantom Menace - No comment.
2. Durango - Damn this one got in my head! I couldn't stop listening to it for the first couple weeks I had it. Mark McKenzie is a damn orchestral chameleon. Sometimes it sounds like Horner, other times like Poledouris or Trevor Jones and sometimes like Randy Edelman. Sometimes even like Barry. This guy deserves more credit.
3. American Beauty - I want the score release badly. Worked perfect in the film, as Newmans scores always do. I don't know what it is about all of Newmans music, but it always seems to have some sort of emotional electricity flowing through it which many composers can't seem to generate.
Runners Up: 13th Warrior, The Matrix
(Of course, in the next couple of months, there are a bunch of scores I'm looking forward to. I'm hoping they live up to my expectations, because this year has been somewhat dry and bland score-wise, aside from the few on my list.)
So what are yours??

Ok people, Phantom Menace wasnt that good, you all just love it because it has teh name Star Wars on it.(hmm...am i talking about the score or the movie?)
Duel of the Fates was ****ing awesoem tho.
My 3: Matrix, October Sky, General's Daughter
im also considering Americxan Beauty, but id have to here the release because i dont remember it will enough in the movie to make a judgement call.Oh, a non-score related question I am reminded of by mentioning TPM and the Matrix...which is better, the lobby shootout of the light saber duel?
i hated my friend when he asked me this.
I say Matrix is superior in all ways, so guess which i pick(it was a tough call tho)posted 10-25-1999 12:32 PM PT (US)

The top score this year thus far is definitely Phantom Menace. And by the way Matt, I don't think it's great just because of the name Star Wars, it's just an amazing score. It is complex and fun to listen to. The runners up would have to be The 13th Warrior and The Sixth Sense.Aaron

If "The Phantom Menace" had been an LP, I would be on my second or third copy, so that has to be #1."The Sixth Sense"-even though the Varese release is not a good presentation and too short!
While I kind of liked "The 13th Warrior" and "The Mummy", I can't imagine they will make it once "Angela's Ashes" or "Sleepy Hollow", or even "The World is Not Enough" appears.

After The Phantom Menace, every other score which I bought seem kinda week (which maybe explains why Entrapment did not appeal to me; I bought it about a month after I bought TPM).So as for the 3:
1. The Phantom Menace
2. Tarzan
3. The 13th Warrior (even though I don't have it yet, 'cos those idiotic purchasers haven't got it here in Malaysia!)NP Far and Away (John Williams)

Matt,I must take issue with your statement "...Phantom Menace wasnt that good, you all just love it because it has teh name Star Wars on it..."
I am one of the people who weren't overly impressed with the music when i first heard it. It took me a while, and a lot of listening, to learn to appreciate what it was and where it was taking me.
Actually, it's shouldn't be "just because it has the name Star Wars on it" it should be "just because it's from John Williams."

Lets see here... #one would have to be The Mummy by ol' Goldsmith. I really didn't care to much for the movie and for some reason didn't really respond much to the score when I watched it. I bought the cd at Walmart on a wim and abso-freakin-lutly loved it. ***Can anyone get me a isolated dvd cd-r copy of the complete score??? Name your price!!!****#2 would have to be Phantom Menace. Duel of the Fates is a track that I could listen to over and over and over. And the Droid Battle music is just soooo cool...great car driving music. Aside from the weird blending of tracks and it not being a 2 CD set I was very happy with it.
#3 is The Snow Files. Other then the X-Files I wasn't sure what his other projects sounded like. Very nice stuff. Alot of it was very different sounding from the X-Files stuff which was refreshing. Alot more melodic and less atmospheric.
Heres hoping that Sleepy Hollow and The World Is Not Enough won't disapoint us

Kevin: a valid point but flawed. people have disliked Williams' stuff before...but they refuse to say that Phantom menace sucked because it is Star wars(im not saying it sucked, but let me say that A: it is far from a good movie, and B: the only good part of the score was DOTF).
I say TPM wasnt very good, Matrix was far superior(im referring to teh movies in this example). People respond "oh, but it is Star Wars"
Well guess what. that is EVEN MORE REASON WHY WE SHOULD BE DISSAPOINTED!!! the first Star Wars, hell the original trilogy far outshines TPM, but people dont care because "oooh, its Star Wars"(annoying whiny voice).
anyway...that felt good, bitch fest is over people...fell free to think what you like.

Well I was never a fan of any of the Star Wars films or score.
In TPM I liked all the main themes, Main Title, Anikin, Duel Of Fates etc, and the same with the previous SW scores. But the stuff inbetween wasn't very good and I found it somewhat annoying to listen to.
If a score is going to win an award then it should be good through and through, and fit the movie, like Instinct, or The Matrix.BTW since TPM used themes and motifs fom the previous SW scores how could it win "Best Original Score"?

Matt,Since we are WAY off the topic with Star Wars we might as well keep it going. Since you are so displeased with TPM instead of just saying it was inferior to the original trilogy and "far from a good movie" I would really like to hear some well thought out examples and resons for your opinion. Examples for both the soundtrack and the movie would be nice. I am just curious as to why some people have responded so negativly to both.

The Phantom Menace isnt my favorite score of the year because I liked the movie. In fact, I didn't like the movie at all. I felt it was a gigantic blemish on the Star Wars name and wish it could be erased, but unfortunatly it has made its mark, and its going to stay.It also isnt my favorite score of the year because of the Star Wars name. Hell, I dont even own in any form the "A New Hope" or "Return of the Jedi" scores.
To tell you the truth, I didn't even LIKE the "TPM" score after the first three or four listens, and believe me, I never thought at that time that it would be my favorite score of the year now. But, after more listens, it grew on me. It grew and grew and grew until I loved it. I loved all but a couple cues, which I can live with, since that is the case with almost all scores apart from their movies. I love all the new themes and I'm so happy that Williams didn't overuse the old themes. Anakin's theme is brilliant and moving. The action peices are complex, driving and always exciting, in typical Williams fashion. And what can I say about Duel of the Fates? Its a masterpeice of modern composing and stands head and shoulders above most anything else being composed today. Who else writes music with this kind of passion and intensity today?
Of course, this is all my opinion, and I'm entitled to one. People who don't like the score are just going to have to accept that there are those of us who like the score for what it is: entertaining music, even if it doesnt always have the "Star Wars" seal stamped on it.

Okay, I am going out on a limb here and I don't wanna sound like a smart ass but here it goes:Most people who don't like Phatom also don't like a lot of Williams' latest score which he has composed in a different, more impresionat and modern style in fact sometimes a little surresalistic. In other words they don't like the score because they don't understand it or want to understand it.
Love,

Dave, if we were actually talking instead of typing I would love to, and maybe in the next few days ill post a little of what i am talking about. But typing it all out is not something i want to do. 2 reasons. 1: I suck at writing so my arguements dont get fully fleshed out(im a great arguer in person, but on paper...) and 2: it would take to ****ing long
Anyway, just had an exhaustive session of Tae Kwon Doe, and so im wiped out right now. We sparred and I got to use a couple moves from the Matrix sparring sequence,so that was cool. Anyway, excuse me while i go collapse.

It's not that I don't like Williams and I do undertand his music. You know the first two CDs I ever bought were Williams scores (Hook and Jurassic Park) and those are great! I also like and own Amistad, ET, Superman ,Seven Years in Tibet, and most recently Jaws which are all terrific.
But I also own A New Hope, and Phantom Menace, and with those I only like the themes, the rest is not really the stlye that I like. And especially when he uses lots brass and plays the highest note possible is when it gets hard to listen to and I usually turn away.[This message has been edited by TimT (edited 10-28-99).]
