The time is aproaching when we celabrate our Lords birthday, so I was wondering which Christmas score you guys like the best.
I go for (of course) Home Alone
I also liked Santa Clause the movie from Mancini.
The Santa Clause was pretty good as well.
Let's not forget Home Alone 2.
Oh yeah, when Santa Lost His Reindeer was really original.

I'd have to say "Miracle on 34th Street" by Bruce Broughton is one of the best Christmas scores out there. The cd only had 2 score cues, but man - they are worth the price of the cd alone.Jeron

Wow Jeron, that's a pretty major statement. Usually if I buy a CD that only has a couple of score cues, it's because it's got a couple of songs I like. But two cues worth the price of a whole CD?Of course, I respect your opinion, being such a Goldsmith advocate and all.

Even though it's a children's production, "The Nightmare Before Christmas" has some fun, memorable themes in it

Well, if you see the cd in the store, definitely consider purchasing it. Don't get me wrong, it's a great addition to anyone's Christmas cd collection, but the real treat comes w/ Broughton's magical score. I love "Home Alone" as much as the next person, but "Miracle" really does sum up the joyful feelings that come with the spirit of the holiday season.I can't say enough good things about it. Heck, if anyone wants a sample of them, e-mail me! It's worth it!

At Christmas every year here in Chicago, this big shopping mall spends tons of money to make ellaborate mechanical puppets in their windows which tell a story for a few blocks. Last year they did "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." I soon as I started at the first window, I recognized the music they were using. I couldn't figure out where I had heard it, but about half way through it finally slapped me... it was The Borrowers by Harry Gregson-Williams. Although it might not strike you as a Christmas soundtrack, it worked surprisingly well and for that reason it is probably my favorite Christmas score.Since that probably doesn't count, next in line is definitely Elfman's Nightmare Before Christmas. I love the songs and the score. Great stuff, right SFT?

Jingle Cats.
This is a pretty rare album, it might not be available on CD. It's not a film score or anything. Some guy recorded feline vocalizations onto a synth and used them to create traditional Christmas carols in the key of Meow. It was hilarious the first time I heard it. Now it has value as the single most annoying tape I have ever known of. I love it.And who says Nightmare Before Christmas was for kids?

Odd as it may sound, my Christmas album is Silvestri's MOUSEHUNT. Even though it only has a few brief Christmas tunes, the whole score seems to have a spirited and fun mood that I think is a fun Christmas listen.

Although not truly a Holiday film, it is a very memorable family film with some nice Holiday scenes, as well as a great brass ensemble score composed by Thomas Newman. This has always been one of my favorites. Especialy the horns during the "Under The Umbrella/End Title" theme. The score is none other than Little Women, and is probably the best score written of its genre.NP - Backdraft by Hans Zimmer

I'm gonna have to go with Die Hard. Of course, it's not on CD but I just love this music in the film. The incorporation of the Christmas music and Beethoven's 9th, just excellent!

Die Hard. Yes, it is definitely my favorite track from the new album 'Kamen's Killer Christmas'- featuring frosty selections from his greatest classics. Who can forget his wistful score for that winter wonderland holiday classic, The Dead Zone?
(SCREEAAACCHHH!!!!) "You're going to put up Christmas lights, but something happens. The lights. They don't work. You accidently stepped on one of them. Now none of them work. You're going to feel angry. Oh yeah. And then there's something about this ice skating accident, but it doesn't look that bad.."I just have to meet my quota of fun. If you have never seen THE DEAD ZONE, then you are probably just confused.

My favourite Christmas soundtracks are:Home Alone 2, or 1. They're pretty well identical aren't they?
The Muppet Christmas Carol - This one I love, it just wouldn't be Christmas without it, I love the score and the songs.
The Nightmare Before Christmas is also a classic - I don't think I need to explain

And I've always liked the score for Santa Claus the movie. Scott was there a score release, or did you just say that you liked the music you heard from the movie?

I must be plum-loco to make such a grievous oversight. I forgot about a score, a score which is without a doubt the best Christmas music ever (my opinion)...The Snowman by Howard Blake
For those of you who aren't familiar with it, The Snowman is a brilliant half-hour animated film which has no sound effects or dialogue (except for a few sentences of narration in the beginning). Instead, the music and the images alone tell the story, and it is told with magnificent artistry and music which is nothing short of breathtaking. I don't know why it was never released on CD. I think the film itself was recently re-released on DVD. Anyone looking for an artful animated film, sweeping brilliant music, or fans of Fantasia should really seek this film out and watch it. There are few better ways to use 30 minutes.

Thanks for the reminder, James. I bought the DVD last year and forgot that I had it. I need to give it a spin. THE SNOWMAN is very beautiful. I really don't think a CD release is needed if you own a DVD player. Like you said, it's basically only music and I think it is best listened in its entirety.
Sorry to ruin the holiday mood. Since you have pretty much heard it all before, I won't comment much on the Jack Frost score. It was just like the film, cold and heartless. Typical Rabin.

There is a CD of The Snowman, surely?
I know that we definately have it on LP, & a CD has been issued. Amazon.co.uk have it in at mid-price :
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000815E/qid=944656782/sr=1-3/026-2743933-0767823
Alternatively, http://www.yalplay.co.uk have it in, & also have special edition, for about £6. You can even change the currency to US $'s there too.
I guess that there just wasn't an American release. Oh, feeling very smug all of a sudden. You see, you get the expanded TND on Jan 11th, we've had the snowman easily accessible & fairly cheap for years.
You don't fancy swapping, do you?Pete (UK)
