Intrada have just put up in their Upcoming Releases section a Prometheus release of these two Jerry Goldsmith scores. Does Anyone know anything about them? I've never heard of them...

Shamus: http://us.imdb.com/Credits?0070680
Police Story: http://us.imdb.com/Details?0070551Two crime thrillers from 1973. Police Story is a TV thing. I've not heard either of the scores, so I can't comment on how good they are.

I don't know about "Shamus," but I remember Goldsmith's main title theme from "Police Story" and it's a good one (but I'm being redundant; this is Jerry Goldsmith, so of COURSE it's a good one). I'll definitely be getting this CD when it comes out.If you want a 30-second listen to the "Police Story" theme, you can hear it at my favorite Jerry Goldsmith website, DECONSTRUCTING GOLDSMITH. Here's the location:
http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Academy/9059/goldsmith.htmWhen you get there, scroll down and click on ENTER, then click on the AUDIO box on the left side of the page, then click on TV THEMES III, then scroll down and click on "Police Story."

POLICE STORY has a theme slightly similar to BARNABY JONES -- same saxophone writing, but slower-paced. Very nice, and I'm REALLY looking forward to this!SHAMUS has a nice ramshackle feel to it, basically in tune with most of Goldsmith's jazz-flavored scores from the period.
Did I mention I'm REALLY looking forward to this?!?!?!?

Just to update everyone, THE POLICE STORY/SHAMUS project for PROMETHEUS is currently still in production. The CD will feature Goldsmith's pilot score for the TV Series "Police Story" in stereo for the first time.
The CD also may feature another Goldsmith score from the 1970's, that that is still up in the air.
As far as SHAMUS is concerned,SONY is still searching for the masters, with luck they will turn up.

Ah, PROMETHEUS. I thought it was a bit out of character for Intrada, this project.Whatever it is, though I must, I STILL CAN'T WAIT!

Does anybody know what the deal is with this CD? Did Sony fail to uncover the masters?

OK FOLKS, this is what's going on with this release.SONY PICTURES as of this date couldn't locate the masters for the score to SHAMUS. A sad but all too true fact of life.
HOWEVER, this release will be going ahead with Goldsmith's score for the pilot to POLICE STORY and with luck a short suite from another Goldsmith score.
This release has been pushed back in favor of another GOLDSMITH score that will be announced in the new issue of SOUNDTRACK MAGAZINE that should be in the mail next week.
Trust me you'll be very pleased with this new title.
(And NO, I'm not going to give you a hint)

THE CHALLENGE? God, I'd hope so, but it doesn't seem too LIKELY. Wasn't it recorded in Hollywood? I thought that was the main reason it's never come out ...I'd bank on another TV property, and there are too many of those to choose from in order to guess. Perhaps THE HOMECOMING (the WALTONS pilot), although I'd save that one for a future release and pair it with something more obscure that might not sell as well (a la the pairing of THE FLIM-FLAM MAN with the more obscure telepic A GIRL NAMED SOONER).
I've always said I wanted to have EVERYTHING Goldsmith did, and it's looking more and more like we might actually have that not just in our lifetimes, but even in Goldsmith's! (Like he cares -- we collectors who pick up his CDs "like bottlecaps" -- but that's not how I think of it. I truly truly care about his music.)

THE CHALLENGE would be great. Actually it was recorded overseas I think and the reason it isn't out is probably because of the rights to the score who actually owns it. It's between either the defunct CBS Productions and I'm guessing 20th Century-Fox or the master tapes are nowhere to be found. Let's hope this isn't the case. I'm getting the score is another TV production. It would be something like A Tree Grows In Brooklyn, The Red Pony, Babe, or maybe even Winter Kill. But let's hope it's THE CHALLENGE. I wish, I wish.P.O.

I have seen most of the Police Story episodes and the pilot years ago and have several of the episodes on tape including the Hunters which features a great score by him. The theme is on an old promo LP and 45s by Ray Coniff. Its a contemporary type cue, but good. Should be good. The Shamus score reminds me of many of his scores in the early '70s. Its a Burt Reynolds detective film from around 1973. Saw it on the plane coming back from Germany. I have clips of score on a tape. They remind me of several of his contemporary early '70s TV scores. Nice little theme. The action cues remind me of Cable Car Murders and some other similar type piano and bongos, etc.
