I've stumbled across some Mp3s of John Scott's score to Antony and Cleopatra.
And I was very impressed by the music.
Anyone know where I can find this CD? I've checked CDnow and places but I can't find it anywhere.
    Is this something really rare?

Also I'd like some recomedations on other John Scott scores, like Red King,White Knight, Far from Home (didn't Folk score that), To the Ends of the Earth, The Second Jungle Book, or any other one still availible that you really like.
    Thanks

There was suppose to be a new release of this
score but I have not seen it. I would try
Intrada, Supercollector, and the other speciality outlets for a Scott score on his
own label. There is also a fine compilation
where he conducts his so called favorite scores that gives a good introduction to his
best (except for King Kong) including Antony
and Cleopatra. There is also a great version
of the main suite on one of the Silva compilations. (Warriors of the Silver Screen, I think.

Any Scott is a worthy purchase. My own favorites are FAR FROM HOME: THE ADVENTURES OF YELLOW DOG, WALKING THUNDER, THE DECEIVERS, GREYSTOKE (his masterpiece), 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, and THE SECOND JUNGLE BOOK. Happy hunting!

John Scott is very underated! He is an amazing composer that always creates a listenable score.

I do not know where to find the actual release of this magnificent score.

A suggestion is to buy Silva's "Warriors of the Silver Screen Compilation." This is a two disc set which includes:

    Taras Bulba(Waxman)
    Prince Valiant(Waxman)
    First Knight(Goldsmith)
    Rob Roy(Burwell)
    El Cid(Rozsa)
    The War Lord(Moross)
    Henry V Suite(Doyle)
    Spartacus(North)
    The Last Valley(Barry)
    The Thief of Baghdad Suite(Rozsa)
    Ben Hur(Rozsa)
    Jason and the Argonuats(Hermann)
    The Vikings Suite(Nascimbene)

Very good recording and worth the money!

    Hope I helped,
    Aaron Collins

does John Scott's website sell CDs?

I'd go there to confirm, but I forgot the URL.

    little help, please.

BTW -- I have CDR of The Deceivers, Greystoke from the LP, and something called England Made Me, also an LP.

    thank you and goodnight

Here's the link but unfortunately the site doesn't sell CDs. http://webhome.idirect.com/~rlevy/index.html

Your best bets are Intrada, Foolight, or Screen Archives.

I really meant to offer the link to show that the score is being performed by a new "Hollywood" orchestra next month at UCLA. It should be a great program, not to be missed by film music fans in the L.A. area.

As far as real availability of JOS CDs, you can get everything from josrecords.com.

This cd is still available at Screen Archives for $16.95. Look at the left hand side of the webpage and click on composers. Then scroll down on the right until you see John Scott. It will list other Scott scores they have on hand for sale.

BTW, an interesting tidbit on this score is that the old Poo boot LP of themes has a cut that says its from Roy Budd's Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, but actually its one of the main themes from Antony and Cleopatra. J.

I have 20 CDs on him and several LPs by him I like. Greystoke is really good. Final Countdown is excellent and so is Mountbatten, a favorite of mine. King Kong Lives is superb as is the Deceivers. Shogun Mayeda another good one.

Yes, Antony and Cleopatra is beautiful

other really great John Scott work include...

    The King Of The Wind
    Shogun Mayeda
    The Scarlet Tunic
    Becoming Colette
    20,000 Leaques
    William The Conqueror
    Cousteau Amazon, 1 & 2
    Cousteau, the first 75 yrs
    The Mill On The Floss
    Mountbatten

I have almost everything released by John Scott, but the ones above have been played the most and I consider to be his best.

The theme from Lionheart is fantastic, the rest of the score is just OK.

(forget the Cousteau New Quinea score, weird improv jazz & drums... I sold it)

Aside from Antony and Cleopatra, I have to sencerly recommend.
Far from Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog

And then theres the 2-CD L'Expedtion Jules Verne - A Bord Du Trois-Mats Belem.
I prefer this French import over the cheaper symphonic suite version "Odyssey of the Belem" released on Scott's JOS label. The JOS release has slightly muffled sound quality when compared to the crisp highs and surround sound of the French import, and the performances aren't as good.

This is just my opinion, and some people may feel the opposite way. But if you just can't afford the expensive French set then the JOS release is still worth it.

Wow! I attended the inaugural concert for the Hollywood Symphony Orchestra at Royce Hall tonight. What a great concert... I'm still trying to process it all. The performances were all top notch. The Hollywood Symphony Orchestra did not miss a beat. They went through a variety of different musical styles, from Goldsmith's LOGAN'S RUN to Korngold's KING'S ROW, the jazz-infused scores for Bernstein's SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, North's STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, even Mancini's PETER GUNN, a piece from Mahler's Symphony No. 5 to John William's theme from MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, Victor Young's AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS and generous suites from John Scott's own GREYSTOKE and ANTONY & CLEOPATRA and they seemed to do it effortlessly. And John Scott was just wonderful, engaging the audience in the evening's festivities, making everyone feel at home and part of the experience. I can't remember a concert with a more livelier orchestra. They were totally engaged and involved in each piece of music they performed... The suite from SCOTT OF THE ANTARCTIC was amazing... A choir and female voice joined the orchestra on stage for the performance and they stayed on stage for the highlight of the evening, the extended oratorio/suite for ANTONY & CLEOPATRA. Clips from the film were projected on the screen and it was especially thrilling to see this footage in its proper aspect ratio. Agamemnon Films will be releasing a restored version of the film on DVD soon. It was quite a thrill to hear the Bard's words read on stage by Michael York, Samantha Eggar and Alan Mandell, set to John's wonderful music. I will never forget it.

So a cleaned up Antony & Cleo is going to be on DVD soon. Interesting. Heston directs and acts Shakespeare. This film has a very interesting look to it to be sure and I prefer it to the Julius Caesar film he acted in in 1970.

The original tracks on the Polydor LP are superior to Scott's re-record though his re-record is still very solid. He added a cue so that there are earlier copies of the CD without it and newer ones with it.

It's a great great score, easily Scott's finest. He's done other solid scores to be certain but I can't say something like Greystoke or any of the others tops this.

And I have that old Poo boot-LP which tried to palm off a cue from A&C as one from Sinbad & the Eye of the Tiger. Gave them an excuse to put out a very nice cover but the guy still got busted!
