Good Lord, that was quick. This is what I get for spending all day yesterday offline doing less important things like, oh, looking for WORK.One of my destinations was the Broward County Central Library, a reasonably quick bus ride to Fort Lauderdale, north of here. I've never seen such a lavishly appointed library in my life ... seen bigger ones, perhaps, but this one had a FOUNTAIN, for God's sake. And also -- one other reason I wanted to drop by -- a REMARKABLE number of soundtrack score CDs. All I can say is, whoever buys for that department certainly likes their Goldsmith ... and I was able to find TWO Akira Ifukube classical discs as well. (Well, he's ON them, they're contemporary Japanese composer collections, but he gets the lion's share of time on one of them -- "Ballata Sinfonica" AND "Sinfonia Tapkaara." This latter 1954 composition, completed not long before he scored GODZILLA, received its world premiere in -- Indianapolis! Conditions must have been impoverished indeed where contemporary Japanese music was concerned, if even the established Ifukube could not get a Tokyo premiere.)
The library even carries DVDs, though not a terrific selection as yet, and you only get to keep them a few days (4 weeks, in the case of CDs). I picked out L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, which I haven't seen in a while, and would like to check out the ISO score; and "Andy Kaufman's Midnight Special," the legendary oddity which I've never seen.
NP: "Sinfonia Tapkaara" (very good 1984 recording conducted by Yukinori Tezuka which I have not heard before ... most likely the premiere of the revised version? the notes don't seem to say, but then they ARE in Japanese ... sigh)

Hey, Rocco, I just checked the local library's website, and they also have a compilation entitled "Japanese Orchestral Music", which contains Ifukube's Ballata Sinfonica. I'll have to borrow that one soon.I didn't know LA Confidential has an iso score. Never seen the movie or heard the score, so... please let me know how the score is on the DVD.

oh pish posh, John....
MY library has ZERO film scores. not even Alexander Nevsky.but my hometown does indeed have a terrific selection of classical...well, used to. it hasn't expanded much at all in the last 4 years or so.
NP -- Deep Water, Beltrami; one of about 12 CDs/ CDRs I've received in the last day or so....yes!posted 09-27-2000 04:15 PM PT (US) Marian Schedenig

We've got a public library network in Vienna, they have some good stuff. Even Indy and the Temple of Doom (on cassette), but that one is in some libary in an outer district where I never went. Luckily, the Ifukube disc is at the same libary that also has a fantastic Raphael Kubelik recording of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances. I've only got a rather poor version by Maazel, so I'll try to make a copy of the Kubelik disc. I was already heavily scratched some years ago when I borrowed it last time, but maybe my burner can deal with this.

Uh, allright, if you really want me to reveal it. Just thought you may not want the few who didn't know it yet to read how you did those scratches to yourself when you heard that Jerry Goldsmith didn't get an Oscar for Planet of the Apes. After all, I agreed to use MY NAME for the website because you were so afraid what some people might think if they knew those pictures were in fact YOUR scratches. But don't even THINK of asking me to give you back the money! We had a deal, don't forget that.

I've TRIED to like Jar Jar...believe me, I have. I've watched TPM numerous times in an endeavor to ratchet-up my dismal first impression, but none of it has worked.
If Jar Jar had been a real being, George Lucas would've turned him away after the first screen test.
I hope that George is content with all of his merchandising loot, because his days of influencing the cinema are sadly long gone.I shall miss him.

Considering that I thought Episode I was medicore when I saw it, I didn't really care for Jar Jar in the first place. It didn't cause the festering hatred that has been widely expressed, but then again I really don't want to see him in the next movie. But since Lucas has already stated that Jar Jar will be in the next movie, hope that he's made some changes.[Message edited by Observer on 09-28-2000]

When TPM premiered, and all of the nation's newspapers were reporting on the enormous number of people camping out in front of boxoffice windows in order to get tickets to the very first showing, my wife & I reminisced about the Summer of 1977, when we stood in line to see the original Star Wars.
Here we were, 22 years later, and we both agreed that while we looked forward to seeing this new movie, we were not in any particular hurry...
Strolling through the shopping mall, we decided to peek into the toy store to see what the new Star Wars toys looked like. While we examined them, a teenager wearing an Episode One T-Shirt approached us. Here is (VERBATIM!) the conversation that we had with him:"Have you seen Episode One?"
"Not yet. Have you seen it?"
"Oh, YEAH! I've seen it FIVE TIMES!"
(This conversation occurred less than 24 hours after the film opened in theatres!)
"WOW! You must really like it!"
"Well, the first time I saw it, I didn't like it at all. In fact, I hated it. I thought it was boring. Then, the second time I saw it, I thought...'This isn't so bad!' When I saw it the third and fourth times, I began to see some of the good things about it. I just saw it for the fifth time, and...it's not too bad!"
"So...you're going to keep seeing it until you REALLY LIKE IT?"
"YEAH!"
I tried to do the same thing, but it didn't work for me. I guess you have to be under 20...
