Hey Tim, were you joking bout not knowing who Maurice Jarre is? LOL I hope you are. Okay, I'll say this, I really enjoy his work and Hollywood needs this guy, more then he needs them. Believe me when I say that because the man can still write beautiful music no matter how old he is. Sunshine and I Dreamed of Africa proved it. These are beautiful and lovely scores that deserve more recognition that anyone cares to give them. Honestly and they've the most romantic I've heard this year so far. But the reason, Jarre isn't working as much as he one did is that he outdid himself period and has nothing left to prove. The eighties really took alot outta him. What all those synthesizer scores he wrote for Year of Living Dangerously (which is excellent), Witness (This won the academy award for one track, Building The Barn), No Way Out, After Dark My Sweet and Mosquito Coast to name a few. For those scores he should've stuck to a more orchestral emsemble and would've worked better not to take away anything from those scores. But my of my favorite scores from the 90's is Jarre's Sunchaser. This is a really lovely score that sadly disappeared just as the movie did. Rent the movie for the score, it's great. Or try and get the 17 minute promo that's out there if you can. But we need more Jarre.

You know, until 'I Dreamed of Africa' , I thought he was dead! I mean I swear I read something somewhere about his death!
I got IDOA just out of curiousity, and I just love the free flowing sound of his music.

Regrettably, Tai-Pan is totally out of print. It was an early CD release by Varese and was deleted early on. It was also released on LP and cassette and you might have a better time finding one of those. Or you could trade someone for a CDR of it... Great score. One of my favorites from him.

Totally agreed here... I just listened to Sunchaser today. Great stuff... and earlier this week, I listened to his new score to Sunshine. Another great score filled with some trademark Jarre marches and a really nice melody that stays with you after it's over with. I missed Jarre...

    Uh, guys...

I wasn't joking when I was asking about Shogun...

    ...just wondering...

Hey, one day I'd like to hear some of the music that Jarre wrote for Firefox that Clint Eastwood didn't use. It sounds like it's about to be a "rah-rah" patriotic score, only Jarre's style adds a bit of ambiguity to the proceedings.

And perhaps one day we can finally hear what his rejected scores to Jennifer Eight, The River Wild and First Knight. I'm more more curious about First Knight and River Wild, since he was replaced by...you guessed it, Jerry Goldsmith. Funny story about The River Wild. Back in 1994 director Curtis Hanson, said that he was quite happy with the music that Jarre wrote for the film. But Universal executives weren't, so Hanson told them, "If you want a better score then hire the best. Get me Jerry Goldsmith!" Ironically, both Goldsmith and Jarre used the same folk tune "The River Is Wide" in their scores.

Another Jarre story that I remember so much regards to his fiasco on Jennifer Eight. The producers of the film, I think it was Sherry Lansing, hired Maurice to score this film because the execs. at Paramount wanted a more high profile composer and Jarre had just finished scoring the Brendan Fraser/Matt Damon drama, School Ties. Over the disapproval of Director Bruce Robinson, who really wanted to hire Christopher Young to score the film. So during the post-production of the film, Robinson and Jarre hardly ever talked or communicated about anything. How he (Robinson) wanted the score to be like. Absouletly nothing!! Which gave the impression that he didn't care about what Jarre wrote. He just wanted someone he wanted to work with. So whatever Jarre wrote and finally hired Young, who went on to write an exciting and moody score. But one still wonders what Jarre's score is like or if it would've made the film any better.

Don't worry Timmer, it's all good. Listening to James Newton Howard's Falling Down right now. Great stuff, too short though. The complete score in the film was only 55 minutes anyway. 27 Minutes is better than nothing.

My Jarre score of the day is:
    Ryan's Daughter

Anyway to get back on topic, I just want to say how great a score Tai-Pan is, it doesn't have one dull moment just wish the tracks were broken up, instead of just two 18min suites.
I have the score tracks right now in MP3, but I'm searching for an original at a good price. But I've been told the price gets high.

TAI-PAN is indeed a great disc ... one of the last of a brief period where Jarre could seem to do no wrong: ENEMY MINE, THE BRIDE, MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME, WITNESS and THE MOSQUITO COAST all shine as well. Jarre also recorded a lovely theme-compilation disc in the same period that included some older, wonderful themes like VILLA RIDES and IS PARIS BURNING. I find Jarre utterly unpredictable, but when he's on top of his game, his work can be quite endearing.

SHOGUN was never issued to CD (unless there's a boot I've never seen), but the LP is a decent listen. I had a request to tape it for somebody years ago, but lost track of the fellow (and won't get to it any time soon, since the LP is in New York and now I'm in Florida.)

Mr. Target, re JENNIFER 8: director Robinson hated Jarre's music for the film so much that he actually made a tape recording, watching the film and "spotting" it as he went along for Chris Young to refer to later. A buddy of mine transcribed the tape Robinson made so Chris could refer to the notes as he was scoring the picture; this friend told me that Robinson was always making (frequently hilariously) withering comments like "And it would be nice, Chris, if you inserted a shocking moment HERE, instead of FIVE MINUTES LATER like *MOR-RIS* would have done ..." No love lost between that pair, for sure. I've never heard the Jarre score, but have been reliably informed that it's one of his less engaging synth-noodlings a la APOLOGY or JULIA & JULIA.

Rocco, you rule!! That is funny, that Robinson did that. And I'm sure Jarre probably did an all synth score to deliberetly say "I'm an Academy Award winner, so Kiss My Ass, Mr.Robinson" personally.

Looks like MP3.COM is going outta business thanks to Universal's lawsuit. LOL Will Napster follow? More news to follow lol

Well I just recieved my original copy of
Tai-Pan today! It's such a great score with powerful and lush themes, and some great adventurous parts and that free flowing sound that Jarre seems to have with his orchestral scores that I like.

And I must add that the cover art is one of the coolest that I've ever seen from Varése!

Tim, the cover art was cropped a little to fit on the cover of the CD. If you ever find the LP, you can see this cover art in all it's glory. If I get around to it, I'll scan it and e-mail to you.

Maybe this is a bit off-topic, but I don't feel like starting a whole other thread for it: we were discussing Chris Young's replacement score for JENNIFER 8: I forgot to mention that that was the first piece Chris ever wrote that became a piece of piano sheet music for the general market. I have a copy of it someplace. I should reteach myself to play piano just to relive that lovely theme. (It was a standard on the TV tabloid show HARD COPY for years. Young's BAT-21 was used consistently as well.)

You know, I played this score again, and I couldn't help thinking that it was styled after a kind of B-movie sound from 30s films. There's even a moment after a quiet passage that the orchestra just erupts quickly and dies down the way Tiomkin would do things. The score is obviously Jarre, but I wonder if he was matching a temp track or if he designed it with a certain nostalgia in mind.
