I've always wanted to ask you guys this question and the current Morricone threads reminded me.Every time I go to my CD store I wade through tens of Morricone compilations. Most of them look quite old and usually have horrible artwork which puts me off. I was recently going to get his Santa Cecilia compilation (Sony classical) but was put off since I prefer original recordings to concert performances.
Are there any suggestions as to which compilations I might pick up. I was tempted when I found one called 'Love Themes' but I hadn't heard of most of the films represented. But I guess that's always going to be a problem with Mr. Ennio.
Thanks for your help.

Yeah, Shaun talked me into The Thriller Collection a few weeks ago, and I have to say that it was an excellent recommendation.I do have to ask you Shaun, what is the rest of the Revolver score like? The cue on The Thriller Collection is so awesome I really want to buy the full album. I saw it in the store, it has a white cover (one of those cardboard slipcases). Would this be a good purchase?

Swash!
Glad you liked it! The Revolver music on The Thriller Collection is the best stuff in the score. The rest is---from what I remember---almost baroque-sounding, with only two or three more references to the 12 minute cue (is it just me, or does the length of the cue change each time I post about it?). I'll listen to it again (a short, 30-minute listen) and report back. The fact that you have seen the Revolver score IN A STORE has me jealous beyond belief. Of course, you're a New Yorker, aren't you? Luh-ee bastard.

Camillu,I have a numer of Morricone compulations but all are Lps and I don't know if any are out on CDs Still if they exist I would recommend:1. Ennio Morricone...un Mondo di Musica(put out by the Italian Readers Digest)Its a nine lp collection covering a very broad range of music from westerns to classical.
2. Ennio Morricone Un Film Una Musica. This is a 2 lp collection put out by RCA with 27 themes from 27 movies ranging from Metello to Maddalena.
3.Dollar Hits. A german release with Navajo Joe, The Big Gundown, Mercenario, and the classic: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.
4. I Grandi Westerns Italiani--Ennio Morricone. Again an RCA collection with various themes from 13 westerns.
5. ENNIO MORRICONE. 3 LP collection from RCA with selections from Moses, Sacco e Vanzette, La Battaglia di Algeri, Metello ect.
Sorry everything is on that old lp format, but if any of these collections exist in a CD format go for them. Great music. There are other collections out there but the ones I've listed do a nice job of covering Morricone up through the mid 80s. Hope this helps.posted 09-27-2000 12:00 AM PT (US)

Swash,
Couple of "ballads", two or three more references of the theme, couple of "hip" lounge-y source cues. Not worth it in the long run. You have the 12 minutes that's worth a damn.

I would buy Film Music Vol 1 and 2 on the
Virgin label. 11.49 ea at CDNOW. These are
a good mix of Morricone thus a good place to
start. The Thriller recommendation, though
a good one, is to specific to start with.
Like Goldsmith, Morricone is much to diverse
to single out one gene.
