Why are the RCA special editions & the recently released Phantom Menace 2CD so ****in expensive?I mean $31 for a 2CD? I don't know what they were thinking...you can't have that price....
Ok..so Phantom Menace is a few bucks cheaper but that doesn't mean it's cheap.I ****in rip-off

Sorrows, 1 CD regularly runs 15 bucks or so (on the average). So it only makes sense that a 2 CD set be priced twice that amount. I mean, when you think about it, you are in effect purchasing 2 CDs, not one. It might be 1 soundtrack, but your getting twice the amount the music. It only makes sense. Just something to think about......Jeron

Hi. Remember the RCA discs. The first manufacturing run was a limited collector's edition, while subsesquent runs were released in normal streamlined jewel cases. The limited edition, which still seems to be available in many places, including here, is what costs more than $30. If you search for the streamlined non-collector's edition, it should run about $23 bucks.

As for the expensive Phantom Menace 2CD set, Sony has admitted this one was "for the collector," so they find it quite right to included a "collector" price tag.

The limited edition comes in very stylish "book cases" instead of the standard Jewel Cases, and the CDs have sort of a hologram surface.Aside from the fact that the Limited Edition is limited (duh), that are the only differences.
BTW, I found the Limited Edition albums for significantly lower prices than I bought the "Ultimate" editio.

So should I get the Limited Editions or the Special Editions?
The Limited sounds nicer...but are they more lika digipak? Cause they get easily damaged..

Actually I got the recent 2CD Phantom Menace for around $20, whereas single CDs cost around $15 - $16.
The Special Editions cost me around $26 each. Here in Malta, that is.

The non-limited (slimline double jewel) versions are better, even ignoring the $10 price difference.

The limited edition's book cases can damage the CDs on the long run. The normal edition's cases are easilly damaged themselves (I had the normal Empire Strikes Back release for about 2 weeks before I found the limited one and bought it, selling the normal album to a friend. During these 2 weeks, the "insert" of the 2CD jewel case broke).Actually, the LIMITED editions were cheaper here than the Phantom Menace 2CD version.

The only problem I've had with the SEs is that the corners of the booklets get chewed up if you slide them in and out of the case more than once. See, the booklet is actually TOO thick to fit in the little insert spot of the jewel case.
Incidentally, I got my copies for $3 each through Columbia House. Actually a good club, if you know how to work their specials right. I've never paid more than $10 per CD in any order, including shipping. Only problem is the limited selection.NP: Hani-Bi, Hisaishi

$3 each? Wow.The sleeves do indeed get harmed quickly, which is why I don't use them. I have all those cardboard sleeves from all my CDs in a cabinet where they're save (except for the Superman sleeve, which is needed to hold the booklet).

I have the limited booklet version and have had no problem with damaged books or cds. I've had mine since the day they were all released (or I should say I bought them each day they were released). The only problem I've had was the outside slip cover and I solved that problem by byuing some self sticking laminating paper and covering the slip case. It is not the easiest thing to do but it helps. The sad thing is when these CDs were first released in the limited book I found mine at circuit city for $21.99 and now they have gone up in price. The only thing I can suggest, if it's a major release try to get them the day they come out. Most stores try to run specials on newly released cds. At least in my area they do. Unfortunately most Soundtracks that get this treatment are the dreaded "songs inspired or written for" crap. The Special Editions were and are the only soundtrack scores other than the original Phantom Menace cd that I've seen put in the New Release section at places like Best Buy and Circuit City.
What all of that had to do with this post, I don't know but I just got typing and couldn't stop.

The slimline cases seem to have gotten more robust shortly after the Star Wars albums were released in '97. At least, that was the last slimline case that broke in my hands.

The Star Wars RCA discs were actually issued three times. The first version was the limited edition with the "book" style CD pockets.
The second version was the same discs and booklet packaged in a slimline 2 CD case. The covers were the same as the limited editions.
The most recent version is the same material but with the Drew Struzan poster artwork for the Special Edition releases.
I recommend the third issue not only because the cover art is much better, but because the limited editions often scratch the discs. I also think that this version also has a more sturdy CD case.
