Like Gae, I also am skint.
Mainly due to the cost of my course.

I didn't pick up Hannibal today (I'm convinced I can get it at a discount department store, which was another reason not for purchasing it along with my lack of funding) but I did pick up Michael Collins(Goldenthal) & The Might(Jones) second hand today for $7 each.

    Quite a bargain really.

In an attempt to both expand my classical music collection/repitoire and compare Prokofiev to Horner, I bought...

    -Prokofiev
Romeo & Juliet: Ballet Suite No. 2/Symphony No. 5 in B Major

    and

    -Wagner
Orchestral Scenes (which has 5 of his works on it)

Both were only $1.98 each! Despite the fact Im broke and need to save for Uni fees, new glasses(for my face, not the drinking kind) and the score for Hannibal, I decided to splurge anyway.

Richard, if you like Willow, then by all means get Robert Schumann's 3rd symphony ("Rhenish") - or better yet, get all 4 of them. There's a cheap and very good double CD set of them on the Decca label, performed by the Cleveland Orchestra and Christoph von Dohnányi.

I don't even know what Willow sounds like.

    *GASP*

Buuuuuuuut, I think I'll have a look for "Rhennish" anyway because like I say, I'm trying to widen my scope. Generally, I like Horner's style, so if it's similar to his work, or vice versa rather, then I'll probably like it.
    Thanks!

I have only heard his work from Extreme Assault, though liked it well enough to buy the disc from his CD label web site, synSONIQ Records!

The fact is, it was rather cheap even with it being in German DEM and shipped like 12 hours after ordering it, taking less than a week to arrive. Just sorry I took so long to do so, I was an little hesitant to order from an store overseas! However all that said, being an fan of video game music, they shall be seeing tons of my money in the future!

Sabbey, if you use Windows, you can download SIDPlay and play music files from the High Voltage SID Collection. They have tons of files from old C64 games, including several by Chris Hülsbeck (be sure to check out Spherical and - not by Hülsbeck - Bubble Bobble, two of my favourites).

(If you DON'T use Windows, I'm sure SIDPlay is also available for other platforms)

Hülsbeck also wrote a great composition program on the C64 with which I also played a bit.

Thanks for the info! I'll go check it out later this weekend. Though, it looks like an similar program I used before, in that it lets you listen to the actual files from said games.

For the most part, my VG music listening has been focused on an few limited sites, that have the music already done, and in MP3 format ready to be downloaded. I am always looking for more however. There's also the CD' I pick up occasionally as well!

X-Men complete is FAR superior. It takes what was a **½ score and makes it ****, IMO. The theme is there, all the good missing tracks are there... The album has one good hting though: a couple of the cues on it seem to be alternates. (Cerebro, for instance.) I'm going to mix the alternate album tracks with the complete tracks and make a nice complete set.

John, you seem to get stuff every day... My question is how in the world could you give Crouching Tiger a better score than Ride With the Devil??? Ride With the Devil is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO superior as a stand alone CD, where as Crouching Tiger is pretty dull and boring IMO (though it went great in the film).... I wouldn't be caught dead giving Crouching Tiger a *****, then again I don't give everything 5's like many of you people =P...

    DULL? BORING?!?!?
Okay, I'm sorry you don't like it, but it is fantastic! Really! If it gets the oscar, it will be the first time I am happy with their best score choice!
As for Ride With The Devil... nice score, yes. Superior to Crouching Tiger, hmm... NOPE.

As for getting stuff every day... Huh? I do not. Really. (See! Six day gap there between Contact Complete/Free Willy 2 and X-Men.)
But seriously, I trade a lot, so those rare thigns I get don't cost too much. Not everything I buy is a full priced CD, either. Free Willy 2 was $3 (and as a Poledouris fan, well...)
I'm trying to cut back on purchases, too. (I haven't bought a full price CD in some time... but the next time I DO, I'm getting it from MovieMusic!)

NP: London Sessions Vol. 2, Delerue ***** (I know people say the first is the best, but number two is my favorite.)

Oh, and I don't give everything fives. I just happen to listen to my five-star scores MOST, so that's what you see on my posts.
A quick rating of what's on my desk now, my most recent new stuff and some old stuff:

    Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon *****
    The Family Man ****
    Galapagos ****
    The Claim *****
    Free Willy 2 ***
    Serial Mom ***
    Contact *****
    Island Of The Sharks ****
    Home Alone ****
    Space Camp ***
    London Sessions 2 *****
    Cliffhanger **½
    Entrapment *

A healthy bit of variety there. Of course, I try not to get stuff that I would rate under ***, so that stuff would naturally be in minority in my collection.

Not the DVD, cause I have that and there's no iso, plus this was on the trading market before the DVD came out. I don't know where it came from, I guess.
I don't know if there are any pressed CDs; this doesn't seem to be an "official" boot (funny term) but something collectors trade. I believe I recall hearing that it was on Napster at some point.
Anyway, if you want an original, I don't know where you can get it. If you want CDRs, well, hey, I can provide you with those.

Went on a CD spree today:

Borrowed from the library, to be copied:

    • Hector Berlioz: Les Troyens (Vickers, Veasey, Lindholm; Chorus and Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Sir Colin Davis) - I love that short piece used in Star Trek: First Contact and wanted to hear the whole thing
    • Anton Bruckner: Te Deum / Mass in d minor (Corydon Singers, Corydon Orchestra, Matthew Best) - Supposed to be one of the best recordings, but after briefly playing some excerpts, I'm very disappointed. The best version I've heard is still Jochum's, but that one has horrible sound quality.
    • Anton Bruckner: Requiem / Psalm 114 / Psalm 112 (Corydon Singers, English Chamber Orchestra, Matthew Best)

    And bought:

    • The Draughtsman's Contract (Michael Nyman) - Found it cheap, and my Nyman sections needs expansion, anyway
    • Gustav Holst: The Planets (Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Charles Dutoit) - After reading all the praise here and listening to some samples on the web
    • Anton Bruckner: Symphony #8 (Münchner Philharmoniker, Sergiu Celibidache) - Celibidache's 7th is slow, but brilliant; not sure yet if the 8th is not a bit too slow

REMARKABLE pair of discs arrived in the mail a couple days back: THE EXORCIST II doubled with THE ISLAND (my two most-missed Ennio Morricone titles!); and a fascinating double CD entitled TARD FESTIVAL 2000: GREAT MUSIC FROM MOVIES I HATED -- anyone else heard of this one?

Whole piles of DVDs thanks to various deals with Columbia House and others:

    EXCALIBUR (John Boorman)
HELL IN THE PACIFIC (John Boorman)
    THE BLUES BROTHERS (John Landis)
    JURASSIC PARK (Steven Spielberg)
    GODZILLA 2000 (Takao Okawara)
REINDEER GAMES (John Frankenheimer) (DON'T LAUGH! I know it's not a great movie, but I wanted the director's commentary track, OKAY?)

Also pending is a very interesting disc which I will describe once I actually get it, so as not to jinx myself with the Post Office.

NP: BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (Leonard Rosenman) (oh yes, this one came too)

Today while I had a 3 hour break between lectures I walked across town to a 2nd hand cd shop.

    Picked Up...
Entrapment - Young: I notice John also bought this recently. He gave it one star. I'm gonna give it 4 stars! I know theres no real "theme" theme, but it's not like its totally lacking of melody. I think that for a modern crime score its rather good. I almost bought it new for $30, so I'm glad I waited and got it for $11.

The Paper - R. Newman: Haven't listend yet. Loved the film though and from memory it's a kinda jazzy score, so good good if it is.

I ALMOST bought Portait of a Lady by Kilar, but I'm trying to save and I don't plan to tell my parents I bought more CD's today because they'll just give me a "you should be saving" talk.

I also saw Revell's "Streetfighter" score. I only noticed it because it was Varése, but the tracks looked reasonably lengthy, so is it worth buying for $9 ($AUS)?

Anyway, if anyone wants to take Entrapment off my hands, let me know. I certainly don't want it, and I'm perfectly willing to trade it away.

NP: Wolf, Morricone (Odd score. That's my general impression so far. Sounds a bit like Glass.)
