This Year's Race for (Spray-Painted) RAZZIE Gold: It's A BATTLEFIELD with No Dearth of Contenders

While the 2000 Oscar race looks wide open, at the other end of the Awards scale, Tinsel Town's Tackiest Trophy Derby seems poised to be a sweep. Polling a whopping 93.5% of all nominating ballots cast, the High Profile Sci-Fi Fiasco BATTLEFIELD EARTH looks like it could unseat 1995's Lascivious Lap-Dancing Laugh Riot SHOWGIRLS as the All-Time RAZZIE Champion. With nine categories being Dis-Honored this year, EARTH took a total of eight nominations. They include it's co-producer and star John Travolta for Worst Actor, his wife Kelly Preston as Worst Supporting Actress and both Forest Whitaker and Barry Pepper for Worst Supporting Actor, as well as nods for Worst Direction (Roger Christian) Worst Screenplay and Worst Screen Couple (John Travolta and ANYONE Sharing the Screen with Him).
The Big Budget B.O. Bomb easily out-polled its rivals for Worst Picture (BOOK OF SHADOWS: BLAIR WITCH 2, THE FLINTSTONES IN VIVA ROCK VEGAS, LITTLE NICKY and THE NEXT BEST THING) each of which got five nominations or less.

Joining five time RAZZIE nominee Travolta in the Worst Actor category are 1998 RAZZIE Winner Leonardo DiCaprio for THE BEACH; 1999's Worst Actor Winner Adam Sandler as the Swivel-Headed Spawn of Satan in LITTLE NICKY; Clone-Man the Bavarian Ah-nold Schwarzenegger for THE 6th DAY; and last year's Worst Actor of the Century Winner Sylvester Stallone, garnering his 25th RAZZIE nomination to date (this time for the wretched remake GET CARTER). The Worst Actress choices are ALL Repeat Offenders: Last year's Worst Actress of the Century, Madonna, as an Insipid Single Mom in THE NEXT BEST THING; Two-Time RAZZIE Winner Melanie Griffith, cast against type as a Spoiled Movie Star Making a Bad Movie in CECIL B. DEMENTED; 1990 nominee Bette Midler, managing to make schlock novelist Jacqueline Susann seem even more grating than she actually was in ISN'T SHE GREAT; Two Time Winner Demi Moore as A Woman Leading a Doubly Dull Double Life in PASSION OF MIND; and fifth time RAZZIE nominee Kim Basinger for both the OMEN Knock-Off BLESS THE CHILD and the OUT OF AFRICA Knock-Off I DREAMED OF AFRICA.

Among the other films vying for a hand-made, spray-painted gold trophy (with an estimated street value of $4.27) are 2000's Two Biggest Box Office Hits, DR. SEUSS'S HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2. They are competing with one another for Worst Remake or Sequel, while GRINCH has a Worst Screenplay nomination and M:I 2 polled a nod for Tom Cruise' Main Squeeze in the film, Thandie Newton as Worst Supporting Actress. Newton's competition includes Patricia Arquette in LITTLE NICKY, Joan Collins in VIVA ROCK VEGAS, Rene Russo for ADVENTURES OF ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE and Mrs. Travolta. The three non-BATTLEFIELD EARTH Worst Supporting Actor nominees are Stephen Baldwin in VIVA ROCK VEGAS, Keanu Reeves in THE WATCHER and, getting a separate nomination for his portrayal of the main character's CLONE, Ah-nold Schwarzenegger (AGAIN!). Austria's Most Awful Actor is also nominated (with Himself!) as Worst Screen Couple, where hell be trying to out-gun Any Two Actors from BLAIR WITCH 2, Richard Gere and the 22-years-younger Winona Ryder for AUTUMN IN NEW YORK, Madonna and Either Benjamin Bratt or Rupert Everett in NEXT BEST THING and Travolta and Anyone from BATTLEFIELD.

Winners of this years Least Coveted Cinema Trophies will be announced at a press conference scheduled for 11am Saturday, March 24 (the now traditional 24 hours BEFORE That Other Movie Award Show). Nominees were determined by ballots sent to 503 Golden Raspberry Award Foundation members throughout 35 U.S. states and 10 foreign countries. To sign up for press credentials to attend the March 24th event, please CLICK HERE or contact John Wilson by E-Mail at: Headberry@razzies.com .

Slime trader? Andre, I have 25 pounds of FishChip for your 2 pounds of slime. And yeah, the Razzies are just as boring and predictable as the Oscars - are these things really needed, Brazilian nutdood?

I said SLIME TRAITOR, not trader.

As for the RAZZIES, I think they are as needed as the Oscar stuff. Yeah, both are ridiculous prizes, but at least the first one IS funny!!

And we don't have to see Jim Carrey talking through his arse...!

    Uga-Buga to you Gringo!

I am also very surprised M2M was not nominated. It is only one of the worst films ever made.

I frankly dislike the Razzies. Whoever it is that puts them together obviously are people who know how to make fun of stuff, but do not understand how the same stuff is made.

Certainly BATTLEFIELD EARTH is an awesome embarrassment to all concerned -- but Kelly Preston for Worst Supporting Actress? She's barely IN the movie, as Mr. Hunter pointed out, and in fact contributed one of the picture's only genuine laughs. I also think Barry Pepper did very well in the movie, considering the rancidity of the script, and of course Forest Whitaker is one of the best actors in America and should never be included on such a list ("Worst Supporting Actor") as this. He wasn't terrific, perhaps, but neither was the script he had to work with.

Remember that the Razzies, back when they paid attention to film music, also nominated Jerry Goldsmith's RAMBO II as "Worst Score." It may be borderline enjoyable from a gossipy point of view to pay attention to such people as nominate the Razzies, but when it comes down to it, the only fun targets they ever hit are the easiest ones.

Hey, I actually liked I Dreamed of Africa, but it's true that Basinger was bad in it. The whole time I was like, with someone else this film would be better (though the real problem with the film is its episodic nature, the characters are running around from one thing to the next to settle down and let us get to know them). I knew better than to see Bless the Child.

I see a place for giving "awards" to loser films. Hollywood should be constantly reminded about its embarrassments rather than think they will disappear and be forgotten.

Are you working overtime Andre....so much hate...so little time.

The razzies are a kick though...happily Brian De Palma was recognized for his stunning..ack..work on Mission to Mars. There was a good idea for a movie there somewhere...buried in a half-way descent score from your idol.

Hale to the sausage-wielding brazilian in speedos!!

To tell you all the truth, I disagree with the M:I-2 thing. Although, there's one part that bugged me when Tom Cruize was acting, and that was right after Thandie injected herself and his lines were "We've got 19 hours and 58 minutes! I'll get Vablah into your system before then! Just stay alive! I'm not going to lose you!" That acting just sucked! And another thing, Tom... GET A FRICKEN HAIR CUT NEXT TIME!

All Tom Cruise did in "M:I 2" was smile that stupid grin, and deliver poorly written lines badly. Who in the world thinks this guy can act?
