Magnolia's overrated by a long shot.and so is EW, though I say I'm impressed they managed to include come actual scores.
and so is Blue Velvet.
I like Badalamenti, but his music isn't that essential to the movie.
A much better effort is The Straight Story, which is far more emotionally tied to the film, in my opinion.posted 10-17-2001 12:51 PM PT (US)

Ok...Entertainment Weekly is like the National Enquirer of Movie magazines, so I don't put too much faith in their stuff. It's "quippy", unsubstantial, and focuses more on a punchline than on legitimate information.
The article reads like it was written by a 13-year old...Not that I doubt their claim that Star Wars should be on any Top 100 List of film Soundtracks, but when their reasons include: "Because it uses Wagnerian leitmotifs" without really caring that the average bear even knows what a leitmotif is, and "Because Bill Murray once sang it"...I really have to doubt their intentions beyond anything other than "Gosh, we better include this, or we're going to get e-bombed by a bunch of geeks wondering why Star Wars isn't on the list...."
It's pretty weak.posted 10-17-2001 12:59 PM PT (US)

This was discussed a while back over on Filmtracks, but I'll say some of what I said before and more...It's quite obvious that the author(s) of this list and my tastes vary significantly.
First off, I'm totally amazed that The Adventures of Robin Hood got mentioned. I love this score and just about anything else coming from Korngold.
I don't understand why, out of Jerry Goldsmith's vast output, Chinatown was picked. It's not one of his best, but it indeed does have a magnificent theme. Wind and the Lion or Night Crossing would be better examples of what Jerry can pull off.
Conan the Barbarian, by Basil Poledouris, isn't even mentioned. Neither is Silvestri's Back to the Future or countless Williams masterpieces. Superman and any Indy film should have been included.
They consider The Godfather to be the best score? OOoooohkay.
Finally, I'm totally amazed that Horner isn't represented at all.
Again, this is just my opinion which I have expressed based on my personal tastes. I welcome everybody else to express theirs.

NP: Sea Hawk
P.S. Transposed digits in the Planet of the Apes year.

Well, South Park, actually, has a phenomonal soundtrack, the songs are hilarious and amazingly well performed. Don't knock it!Anyway, any soundtrack list that doesn't include Superman The Movie isn't worth looking at. Travesty!

Come on, kids! Go find another place to play "Animals Sounds and other Noises heard on the Farm." You're chasing away people who might be able to enrich your movie music appreciation and bootleg collecting fun.Awwhh, damn. The sarcasm is thicker than maple syrup. Where's my stack?

Perhaps EW should make this right by doing a list of 100 scores and let experts (like a jury of composers and film music geeks - sorry) call the shots.
