Great news from the Marco Polo front: John Morgan said he and Bill Stromberg have "many plans" for more Herrmann. He said he'd love to do the complete score of one of these films: ON DANGEROUS GROUND, THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER and FARENHEIT 451.And Tiomkin fans can rejoice: Morgan is now working on a restoration of Tiomkin's RED RIVER for a "recording early next year." He said the scores are a "mess and hard to read" and with the choir, RED RIVER will be "a real challenge."
The next Marco Polo release will be film music of Adolph Deutsch with extended suits from THE MALTESE FALCON, GEORGE WASHINGTON SLEPT HERE, THE MASK OF DIMITRIOS, HIGH SIERRA, and NORTHERN PURSUIT. This one's slated for March 2002.
Been waiting for RED RIVER for more than 50 years [well, only about four decades, actually, since I first saw it at the tender age of 12 when it was re released]and while the Laurie Johnson Tiomkin release of a few years ago is adequate, I'm eager to hear what Morgan/Stromberg will do with this landmark score...it'll be a brilliant CD, I'm sure.
Good news for Herrmann, Tiomkin, and Deutsch fans!

We need all the Tiomkin anyone is willing to record!Always happy to see more Herrmann. I was a tad disappointed with their latest, 5 Fingers & Snows of Kilimanjaro, but am always willing to support their attempts.

Excellent news about Red River. Now if only the team would consider The Big Sky and Rio Bravo! Is there any hope?

There's more news on The Big T front...but first: Yes, Shaun, Jack is one happy camper, as am I! And John T [as in John T. Chance of RIO BRAVO? Just wondering]: I don't know about THE BIG SKY or RIO BRAVO but the following info is courtesy of James Fitzpatrick of Silva Screen.James sez Silva is still working on a double CD of Tiomkin, fitting in recordings of Tiomkin in the Silva sessions whenever he can.
These suites are either already recorded or about to be recorded: TENSION AT TABLE ROCK, THE WILD WILD WEST [rejected themes], DUEL IN THE SUN[!!!], GUNFIGHT AT O.K. CORRAL, THE WAR WAGON, FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, THE ALAMO, THE UNFORGIVEN and GIANT.
Fitzpatrick said about 130 minutes of Tionkin's music is "in the can." Hopefully, some of the as-yet unrecorded suites will include RIO BRAVO and THE BIG SKY. TBS is one of The Big T's finest and most overlooked scores, IMHO, an elegiac, sweeping work of great emotional depth. Gerhardt's suite captures the emotion quite well, but it would be wonderful to have more - much more - of this Tiomkin effort.
I also hope that when Elmber Bernstein begins releasing his Film Music Collection re recordings on CD, one of his first choices is THE LAND OF THE PHAROAHS/GUNFIGHT AT O.K. CORRAL. I taped my LP years ago and GUNFIGHT is terrific.

Yes, I didn't really want to go into this, but as much as I was looking forward to 5 Fingers/Snows, I thought the performances could have been sharper. The liner notes suggest they had a hard time reconstructing the scores, but am I supposed to excuse them that? The Snows Main Title was wonderful but all the following music for the vultures around the camp was excluded (a big let down). They selected all the right other cues and they did the entire 5 Fingers but that intangible bite was missing from the rendition. I think they did a great job with The Egyptian and a so-so Garden of Evil. I welcome any Herrmann and they certainly do a better job than Silva and a number of the Varese recordings, but I'm a tough bastard to please.

The biggest problem with KILIMANJARO/FIVE FINGERS isn't the music, but the notes on the latter film. Among other things, the guy who wrote them keeps calling James Mason's character "Danilo" when, in, fact, he's called "Diello."It makes everything else he wrote suspect...

Perf--Somehow, since you know M & S, what you say rates an eyewink. Is there an inside joke I'm not getting?I still repeat that with Snows/5 Fingers, I thought the performances were dry and the Snows selections poorly considered. I rate other M & S CDs very highly though and I'm glad they tried these scores even if the results were mixed.

An excelent suite of THe Maltese Falcon is included on the CD FILM NOIR on BMG.
The team is Stromberg/Morgan too, and the suite last 8.32.
I hope thewre is some new music on the Falcon and nost just the same suite that,
by the way, is an excelent recording and performance on the BMG CD.
Will be hard for Morgan/Stromberg to beat

Well Marcelo, I added a few more cues and I like the recording much better this time around! I think the album is just about due out in Europe, but will not be ready here in USA until July!

Gosh Peter, you ask tough questions! We did two albums in Moscow. One was RED RIVER and the other was a Steiner album with music from ALL THIS, AND HEAVEN TOO and A STOLEN LIFE....two beautiful scores for two Bette Davis films.
My guess is the Steiner may make it by the end of the year and RED RIVER, hopefully early next year. A documentary crew came to Moscow to follow all our steps in recording the Tiomkin. And Marco Polo may have them include about a 10 minute video tour of rehearsing and such with the CD. I am pretty un-knowledgeable about such things, but it would be an enhanced CD. I would assume this visual stuff would be on the CD along with, but separate from the music, so I don't know what is what as far as technical and time limitations. Red River will certainly be over 60 minutes. So this may delay things!
Hopefully Bill and I will hear the first edits later this month. We are indeed anxious!!!John

I just received a call from Craig Spaulding of Screen Archives and although the Deutsch album is not due in the States until late June-early July, it is out in Europe. Craig will have these discs (from Germany) and not more expensive than the domestic release, in by this Wednesday. For those of you who must have it now!

Wow!! I had no idea you guys were doing Red River and A Stolen Life. As a big Hawks fan, I know the River score like the back of my hand. Tiomkin always sounds like he'd be incredibly tough to conduct and many people have failed in the attempt, I really hope this went well. And, while I wish you guys would steer away from Steiner to do other composers I like more, you do such a good job with Steiner that how can I really complain especially since A Stolen Life is a personal favorite. At Filmus-L you said you had about 100 titles you wanted to do, but you never gave us titles. What's the true gen on upcoming CDs. Are you serious about doing an Eisler disc? What else are you considering?
