From the official press release regarding the E.T. 20th Anniversary celebration:

    quote:
The anniversary celebration campaign will kick off in theaters on November 21, with the debut of a newly-created animated Universal Studios logo, which depicts an image of E.T. and his human friend Elliott, as their bicycle flies across the classic Universal globe. Additionally, John Williams’ famous "Flying" theme from E.T. is interpolated into the Universal musical fanfare. This special logo will first appear on Spy Game, and continue on Universal films through 2002.
    (emphasis added)

So since Goldsmith wrote the fanfare, I'm wondering how this thing is gonna sound.....

I'm sure I'll find out tonight at the SPY GAME screening....

If memory serves...weren't Jerry and Johnny together in one track of the SUPERGIRL score? "The Poster" or something.

Well, I didn't mean to imply that this is the first time that it's happened... I just think it's interesting. With "The Poster" (or whatever cue it was), Goldsmith just wrote a bit of Williams' theme into his score.

With this, though, it sounds like they're taking Goldsmith's pre-existing fanfare, and Williams' pre-existing "Flying" theme, and "interpolating" them on top of each other.... wonder who exactly is doing that, and if it's a new recording - or some clever sound mixing?

Just wanted to mention that Goldsmith's Universal Fanfare is brilliant!

I agree Marian. It's one of the best studio logo fanfares!!!

It is grand. So...beside the Uni logo, and the Dreamwork one by Williams, I don't think there are other "good" logo music out there.

Ahem. 20th Century Fox logo, anyone?? I think that qualifies as not only GOOD, but TIMELESS.

I really like the Horner version of the Universal logo - especially the 75th Anniversary Extended version.

Oh - and for a shameless plug: http://www.soundtrack.net/logomusic/

Given all those, I REALLY like the Joe Harnell UA logo music...

It will be interesting to hear how this interpolation sounds....

I really miss the use of Horner's Universal Fanfare, which is one of my faovrites. I liked the quiet sense of wonder and adventure it anticipated and evoked.

There's a lot of good logo music out there. I really enjoy the Tristar theme, for example (if I weren't so lazy, I'd look in Dan's database to see who wrote it ).

You know, just last night I had the damned Universal Fanfare in my head and it kept me awake!

Go Jerry and Johnny! Yay. Woo hoo.

Is there anywhere one might obtain these logo pieces to make say a compilation? Or is ripping them from DVD the only option? Obviously the 20th Century Fox logo is easily retrieved. What about the others?

"20th Century Fox logo, anyone?? I think that qualifies as not only GOOD, but TIMELESS."

    Agreed!
However, the latest orchestration sounds so tinny and amateurish as to possibly put a dent in the timelessness...
How is it that Fox worked so hard to revamp the visuals in their logo, and they RUINED the music?

20th Century Fox? I had a major brain fart there. Speaking of logo music, what aobut TV? I really love the way ABC arranged their music.

Got back from SPY GAME - fun movie!

The new Universal logo was the weirdest thing I've ever heard and seen in the past few years.

Visually and musically, it starts out with Goldsmith's fanfare, but it felt like a slightly different mix. Then it built up to the crescendo as normal - except it bursts into Williams' "Flying" theme from ET as the bike logo flies across the globe.

    Very odd.

Well, it's a bit off topic, but.... HGW's score worked really well in the film - it's a nice blend of ENEMY OF THE STATE and ARMAGEDDON - it's fun. The movie was very enjoyable as well - it's not exactly Academy material, but it's nice escapism.
