I know this is old stuff, but I was hoping someone here can shed a little light on this:
I liked Jurassic Park, but the film doesn't work for me because of one MAJOR flaw towards the end of the film, who or what the hell killed the crew of the ship that rammed the dock??? There were no loose dinos running around the ship, and how the hell could that T-Rex get into the wheel house and kill the pilot, leaving only his hands attached to the steering wheel? I think Spielberg really dropped the ball with this one, to me being perhaps the BIGGEST story hole in a movie ever...
    Help!
    John

Those who hate the movie will complain. Those who like the movie, such as myself, speculate that there were raptors on the boat as well, especially considering that in Jurassic Park (the book) raptors managed to board a boat and remain hidden from the crew.

I hear that the original ending was going to feature scenes of raptors stalking through the mainland, setting up a sequel, and at the last second Spielberg changed his mind in favor of the current ending.

That's exactly how it was described in the (excellent) book, Wedge. A much better ending, if you ask me. The last minute change was made when they realized that the T-Rex was the "true star" of the movie. I've read that this idea originally came from Williams??

    Marian,

I had read that Spielberg made the change (not Williams) because he realized this would probably be his only chance to do a "Godzilla"-type rampage on film....

I wish they would have gone with the original book ending.

So, we are talking about LOST WORLD: JP 2 - which in my opinion was a disaster as a movie. There were so many scenes which had the feeling of being CUT severely because ultimately Spielberg wanted this to be a kiddies' movie too - which was the totally wrong approach to the story...

It's funny that I saw this very film while I was on a holiday in the sunny California back in 1997. I was kinda shocked when the LOST WORLD theatre was full of very young kids - and even couple of parents with babies (!!) with them... But after the film I wasn't shocked anymore - it was truly an annoying kiddies' movie...

    Just my opinion.

    KEN

Actually, we're talking about the first movie. As for the sequel: What story?

Actually John is referring to The Lost World because no boat rams the dock in Jurassic Park.

In all seriousness it really isn't that big of a deal to the story. I don't think it makes a major plot hole in the story. Now if the T-Rex wasn't sedated and ate Roland but still shows up on the ship then you have a major plot hole. More than likely the T-rex killed most of the crew and the one member sealed him in the cargo hole before he died.

Oh the same way Ben Gardner in Jaws is still in the boat with one eye missing.

Whoops. My reply was with the assumption we were talking about the 2nd film, given the first post on this thread (which is clearly referring to events in the 2nd film).

2nd film? Both film and book were utter tosh...Crichton and Spielberg on autopilot!

Crichton ain't that good a writer anyway!

Oops...I missed that "rams the dock" part. Sorry. But I still maintain that you need to have a plot for it to have holes.

My theory is that the crew jumped ship after the T-Rex woke up and scared the s^*% outta them.
