    Heya Gal,

The holiday in Sydney was great except for the fires. We hired a place 1.5 hours Sydney South and passed all the smoking trees and dead animals. It was strange how it would be heavily overcast with smog like a Winter's night at 4.30 PM.

Unfortunately, I'm experiencing a few respitory problems and it hurts to laugh, eat or talk. Otherwise things were great...and yourself?

    Rochelle

Oh you poor thing. I had heard about the fires but didn't think you'd be in the middle of it like that. I hope your health clears up incredibly quick, it really sounds somewhat scary to have those kind of symptoms. Perhaps you should consult your physician right away. I also feel for you about seeing the destruction, especially innocents like the animals. It must have been horrible. I don't know how you had a good time but I'm glad you feel a little positive about it.
My holiday was quite and peaceful. I watched the celebrations from around the world and then Dick Clark. I then subsequently went to bed after midnight. Like I've said before, I live life on the edge! Thanks for asking, and again, welcome back!

    the filmscore gal,
    Gala

The Grammys have a frustratingly odd time frame for qualification. This year, recordings released from October 1, 2000 through September 30, 2001 are eligible. Thus the nominations for Traffic, Chocolat, etc. And hence, Harry Potter (and FOTR) will be eligible in next year's awards.

On that note, does anyone know if they actually have a reason for doing this every year? It seems to me it would be far less confusing for the public and the nominating committees if they just went year-by-year.

I never put much faith in the Grammy Awards, anyway. BTW, Patrick Williams' theme from the TV movie Blonde was also nominated for "Best Instrumental Composition."

How is Isham's Men of Honor? I never saw the film, but recently after discovering some quality scores of his (Fly Away Home and October Sky), I'm looking forward to hearing more Isham.

    Anybody heard it?

LOL! That's really just too much! And all this is just the comedy for the film music choices! What's also amusing are the choices for pop music...now THAT's comedy!

I think Martinez's score for 'Traffic' works superbly in the film and for this reason it deserves a nomination. After all, thats why it's nominated, because if it was being judged on it's stand alone musicallity, would it not be in the "Best Instrumental Composition" category?

Actually, the category Traffic is being nominated for is officially called "Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television, or Other Visual Media." The Grammies are, after all, music awards, not film awards. That is, if you can call them awards at all.

Thanks, that's what I suspected. At least, Potter will get a chance that way. I'm sure, if both A.I. and Potter were eligible this year, they'd still picked A.I..

I'm wondering though, after reading the above posts: The Grammies are music-oritented awards. It makes sense that for the Oscars and Golden Globes (etc.), the role of the score in the film should be most important. But for the Grammies, shouldn't they judge the scores on a purely musical level? (Or: Do they?)

I agree, Marian; I think that is how they judge them. That's why I pointed out that the category was Best Score Soundtrack Album. I think that would indicate they look at the recording itself on CD, and not how it works in the film.

In that case, I have been dreadfully mis-informed.
