As luck would have it, i was looking at the TV guide channel, something i rarely do and saw that the Disney channel was to air The Brave Little Toaster. For those who have not seen it, it was a old Disney cartoon that had all the funny/friendship/ and sadness that all Disney movies today lack. I am not a Disney fan at all, but anyone could see that. The Toaster, Blanket, Radio, Lampy and the Vacuum decide to leave the little house on the you-know-what in search of their Master who has been gone forever. An excellant cartoon movie in it's own right.
Highlighted by a beautiful score by David Newman. Just a wonderful score. I recommend for those who have not seen it, to go rent it and catch the score. It had some wonderful pieces in it and most desevedly deserves a release. (Other than the you-know-what.)
Better and MIB2 and AP3 combined. And this movie was from years ago.On a side note, i was pleased to see that The Brave Little Toaster Goes To Mars was comming on next. That lasted for about 10mins. Apon seeing the cheesy movie titles fonts i realized something was amiss. (Like David Newman.) But i thought i would bare with it.Instantly i was taken away by the Radio not having the same voice. the lamp was a little off as well. But it seemed the Vacuum and the Toaster and the Blanky had the same voices. But the toaster, sadly, had been "disney-fied" and was now over nice and unbelieving. They seem to have forgotten what the character was originally. Who else hated that ***damn rat?! It became too much and i had to turn it off after the stupid baby and the overloving Master.
And on yet another side note, for those who saw the origianl, don't you think the spare parts guy who recued them from the swamp looks like Ford? Just the slightest bit?Now i hate songs in any form in movie, but i have to admitt the ones in this were catchy and i enjoyed them- to an extent. It was really David Newman's score that brought me through them.
And that one sad scene at the pond where the Toaster backs into a flower and turns around. The flower falls in love with it's reflection and the Toaster keeps trying to let it off easy, but makes a dash for it. IT stops and goes back peers through the grass and sees that the flower is dead and drooping down and a peltle or 2 falls off. Combined with Newman's score, i have to admitt that scene made me water up.
Anybody else want to speak up for it?[Message edited by justin boggan on 11-09-2002]

Although I hate all the songs (except for the one in the junkyard, which is not bad), I have to confess I do have a soft spot for this film. That scene you mention with the flower is truly heartbreaking. Another of my favorite points of the movie is Phil Hartman's performance as the Air Conditioner, which to this day I will say was one of his best roles ever. ("I'm not an invalid!!! I was designed to stick in a wall!!!!") Hartman also shows up later doing a eerily perfect Peter Lorre impersonation as the Hanging Lamp in the resale store.
The best part of the movie, however, is undoubtedly David Newman's rapturous score. I think this may still be my favorite of all his works thus far. It's epic, emotional, and very powerful, and of course written in Newman's very distinctive 80's style. I'd buy an official release in less than a heartbeat, despite already having that-which-shall-not-be-named, but sadly I don't think that's going to happen unless Newman decides to put it out as a promo.
Regarding the voices in TBLT Goes to Mars (which is a travesty), Jon Lovitz was the voice of the Radio in the original, and since he's made something of a name for himself he probably didn't want to do something like this (though it didn't stop Wayne Knight, Farrah Fawcett, and DeForest Kelley from joining the cast). Despite thinking Lampy sounded a bit off, it was actually the same actor. The Toaster had the same voice, as did Kirby the Vaccuum (Thurl Ravenscroft, who is approaching his 90th year and is probably best known now as the voice of Tony the Tiger of Frosted Flakes commercials, though he has a long, long history at Disney). Blanky was a different actor, but as I believe he was actually played by a little kid in the first film (he has no other credits whatsoever at the IMDb), getting him back probably wouldn't have worked.
Nice observation about the spare parts guy (Mr. St. Peters) looking like Ford.
Incidentally, he was voiced by Joe Ranft, an animator and writer who now shows up as a voice (as well as some other credit) in almost every Pixar film (most memorably, I think, as Heimlich the Caterpillar in A Bug's Life).
I second the recommendation for renting the original. You may very well find the movie insanely annoying, but Newman's score is not to be missed.

I knew a girl that reminded me of that flower. So delacate, so beautiful. So that scene may have affected me more than other people.
Thanks for agreeing, rent it people! But avoid TBLTGTM like the plague!!!!!I didn't fully read the end credits so you caught me by surprise when you mentioned that the late Hartman did 2 voices. truly a master for i did not know he did them.

I hope the songs are on the upcoming cd....they aren't on the bootleg. This score is up there with the Phantom as my favorite David Newman score!BobaMike
Note: the original film is NOT a Disney movie, it was an independant film I think. The sequel is Disney if I remember right however.posted 11-08-2003 02:06 PM PT (US) justin boggan

The boot has 22 tracks and suffers from the same problem as the Predator boot - distortion when the music gets really loud. But luckily it doesn't get loud very often.
But, unlike the Predator boot (which was missing one track), The Brave Little Toaster boot has none of the songs as you mentioned.
They should be one the official release. I really hope they are score only and no singing.
I can't wait for this release.

I always wondered why the Chair doesn't get a speaking part. Everyone's always praising the Toaster, Vacuum, et al., but nobody remembers the heroism of the Chair. It's a damn shame.

Okay, it's now pushed back to October. Wonder what happened?Maybe unlike some other sellers, he checked his CD for errors and might have found one and is fixing it. Just speculation.
