Hey, this is a very unofficial MM reader's poll kind of thing. I want to tally what you think were the best things of 2002. This is very much a blank ballot with LOTs of empty space, meaning, there's plenty of room for you to "write-in" your own "best of" categories. Theoretically, there are an endless number of categories, but the ones qualifying for final tally are those categories that attract at least 10, maybe 20, votes. When voting, for example, don't suggest 5 scores as "best of." Just one will do, thank you. Here are a few categories to begin with:
1) Best composer
3) Best CD release of a 2002 score
4) Best CD release, archival (non-2002 score)
3) Best CD artwork for a 2002 release
2) Best CD label 2002
5) Best most unnoticed score CD of 2002
7) Touchiest fanboy of 2002
9) Hardest-assed member of the STPD, 2002
6) Best "grab yer meds" message board thread, 2002
Ok, you get the picture.... I want everyone who regularly posts to take a moment and contribute. If not, I will hound you into 2004 already.posted 01-02-2003 12:07 PM PT (US)

Hmmm... I haven't heard even, like, 1/100th of everything that was released... but I'll chime in anyway 'cause I'm bored.;)
Outstanding Score
Although I'm only getting the CD over the weekend, as heard in the movie, definitely Howard Shore's The Two Towers. As it's already been said, this is movie music history in the making. Most Original Score
I guess I'd have to say Black Hawk Down. Zimmer and company created a soundscape that was very diverse, very emotional, and quite original. Now, I did hear of people commenting on the fact that some of the cues which were supposed to be genuine Somalian music weren't and that it was a disgrace, but I'm afraid I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment on that. Hence, in my Canadian opinion, BHD is just a great, original gem of a soundtrack. Most Controversial Score
I'd have to say Elfman's Spider-Man. This is a score I hated at first... and then I was neutral to it... and then I liked it... and now I really love it. And given all the discussion that was generated over it, definitely the most controversial score of the last year. A close second: the overly-techno Die Another Day.Most Prolific Composer
Although I'm not a fan of his recent scores, I think I definitely have to say... John Williams. I mean, there's Episode II and Harry Pooter, two quite massive scores (whether they lived up to their potential is up to the individual listener), and there's Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can. For an aging composer, that ain't half bad. Close second: Danny Elfman (MIB II, Spider-Man, Red Dragon, and Chicago).Biggest Surprise of 2002
John Powell's The Bourne Identity. What a stinker that was!Biggest Scam of 2002
Loran Alan Davis.
"My wife is dying of cancer and you guys have no respect!!". I mean, geez, the guy logged on under different names to pat himself on the shoulder, and he pretended to be the official composer for Mission: Impossible III and War of the Worlds, among other things.Outstandingly Irritated Board Member

1) Best composer: Klaus Badelt (The Time Machine and K19....we are talking about the first solo efforts of a 33 year old guy; besides, in The Time Machine the score was perfect within the visuals: look/listen to the last five minutes). Letīs recognise a fact...Williams, Goldsmith, etc are great, but they belong to the past.2) Best CD release of a 2002 score: The Time Machine (almost all of the music written for the film is in the cd)
3) Best CD release, archival (non-2002 score): as madono has said...the isolated score in the special edition of Pearl Harbor
4) Best CD artwork for a 2002 release: The Time Machine
5) Best CD label 2002: Varese Sarabande
6)Guilty pleasure score of 2002: Bad Company (Rabin) / XXX (Edelman)
7) Worst message board thread, 2002: all of them which start by "Whatīs new in your collection?" They are sooooo boring and uninteresting.

BUT WILLIAMS AND GOLDSMITH ARE MY MOST FAVORITE COMPOSERS!!!!! HOW DARE YOU SPEAK ILL OF THEM.If they used CSS, but no such luck...
Two votes for King of Kings vs. two votes for The Fury vs. two votes for Pearl Harbor.
! Yes, this is a very scary world we live in, my dear friends... This is a world where GoldenEye and Die Another Day supersede Tomorrow Never Dies in quality. [Message edited by jonathan_little on 01-03-2003]

This thread is spiraling out of control already. No surprise! Here's some help: 2) DVD isolated scores are not "releases" on CD, so they do not belong in a "release" category. 4) As unbelievable as it might seem, I am asking everyone to refrain from discussion in dis particular thread. It makes for very difficult tallying!Time to start hounding.
Dan? Your lists, please, before neg'ing others'. Jeron? Taxes.. err.. Texas isn't that exciting. Use some of that boredom here. Kimiakane? Sebulba? Sartori? Tonks? Lou? Dinko? Gae? BobaMike? hornerfan? sean? Matthew? PeterK? This could take a while....

Ok, fine:
1) Best composer
Probably someone whose work we haven't heard.
In the absence of said unknown: William Ross.3) Best CD release of a 2002 score
xXx. The original 2CD soundtrack. It had little or none of Edelman's pee-poor 'score'.4) Best CD release, archival (non-2002 score)
Love Story - The World's Greatest Orchestra Plays Love Themes from Today and Yesterday.
Philadelphia Orchestra / Eugene Ormandy.3) Best CD artwork for a 2002 release
Alexander Nevsky. (Schippers/NY Phil). It looks dark, and evil, and medieval.2) Best CD label 2002
EMI Classics. Boxed sets of 6-11 CDs, all for the price of 2 regular CDs.5) Best most unnoticed score CD of 2002
Nino Rota's Romeo and Juliet. The one Prague CD from Silva that is actually listenable and not totally screwed by certain people.7) Touchiest fanboy of 2002
Too many to name.9) Hardest-assed member of the STPD, 2002
That guy from MGM who posts one-line useless messages.6) Best "grab yer meds" message board thread, 2002
Anything at FSM.x) Best soundtrack scandal: Intrada's handling of the YSH fiasco.
Second best: Attack of the Clones bonus tracks, stickers, covers, Targets & Wal-Marts, and God knows what else.y) Most hopeful happening of 2002: Horner's Windtalkers and Four Feathers, both of which came and went relatively unnoticed. Hopefully, that's the last we'll hear of him.
z) Most unlikely to happen: Alfred Newman to be declared God and worshipped by all as the greatest film composer who ever lived.
