I picked up this Telarc disc last week, and it blows Silva's crappy fake surround titles out of the sky.

The selection is mostly noisy action scores, see the list: http://www.moviemusic.com/CD/bigpicture.html
(note: this MM.com link is to the regular CD, not the DTS version).

Erich Kunzel leads excellent rousing interpretations of somewhat traditional repertoire.
The Cincinnati Pops does a marvelous job, though as usual the string section sounds tiny.

The sound effects in DTS are incredible, but the music is the real winner.
The 4.1 mix drops the center channel. I cannot say that this affects the music in any negative way.
Though the multichannel offers huge amounts of detail.
It is also nice to hear Crimson Tide performed with fewer electronic gimmicks. The chorus in particular is mixed to come out loudly from four speakers while the orchestra appears mainly from the front channels. The effect is weird, non-natural, but quite stunning.

ID4 does not have the bang of the Hollywood orchestra, and the concert hall setting does not work so well for it as it does for other scores on the disc.

Edelman's Dragonheart and Gettysburg, on the other hand, get much better treatment than on the original soundtracks.

The best cue on here though is Jumanji. Horner's weird composition is perfect for surround sound with the more traditional orchestral elements coming from the front speakers, while weirder occasional outbursts come out of the rear speakers. The mix is also more pleasant and open that Murphy's original mix which in 2channel seemed somewhat claustrophobic.

Excellent stuff in DTS 4.1 surround from Telarc.

I've always been meaning to pick this up, but the music on the disc is slightly lame so I've been passing on it. Maybe I'll finally pick it up.

Not having a center channel doesn't bother me, since my center speaker isn't the best thing for music anyhow. (But it does make me wonder why Telarc says this is a 5.1 disc on their website.)

Me would wonder too why they say 5.1.
Maybe I should check my connections too.
