Saw this at Screen Archives: JUNE 1ST FOR NEXT PROMETHEUS CLUB RELEASE: John Barry's THE WHITE BUFFALO.

Another one I've wanted for years.

Can someone describe what type of score Barry wrote for this movie? Action, drama, other?

"White Buffalo's" score is kind of similar at times to his other western scores ("Dances With Wolves," "Monte Walsh") as I recall.

It does have a lot of similar orchestration to 2 other scores he did around the same time: "The Deep" and "Day of the Locust."

If you are familar with either of those scores, the orchestration during the churning dramatic passages is somewhat similar. (Sorry...I'm not entirely sure how else to explain it.)

The film is so-so, but the score is rather good. Especially the finale & end credits.

James

If that isn't a joke, then it is, without a shadow of a doubt, the most horrid CD artowrk I have ever seen.

Someone must have been working on labels for corned beef and got the projects mixed up.

Well, that's from one of the original poster designs. However, perhaps anticipating the negative reactions, the John Barry website says an alternative cover can be displayed by refolding the CD's booklet.

I don't mind that the art is from the original poster. It's weird, but hey, it's from the late 1970s. What I do mind are the useless "LIMITED EDITION #18" and "ORIGINAL MGM MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK" plastered on there. It's just too cluttered.

If you must put "ORIGINAL MGM MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK" on the front because of some idiotic legal requirements, put it beside the cover in the clear CD tray area. "LIMITED EDITION #18" should be on the spine, not on the cover.

Those are just my personal opinions to clarify my words for those who wish to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.

Oh well, it's supposedly all about the music, right? It's still worrisome that Prometheus is consistently pumping out sub-par artwork.

Yep! that's the same poster I remember being plastered around the city at the time of the film (and being dissapointed that there was no soundtrack album), don't care about the cover, hot damn but we've got a new Barry release in an age that is pretty much Barry'less. For me that's something to celebrate

Oh, and from what I remember the score was pretty damn fine at that too!

I think Barry fans will be very pleased with this release - but it's VERY different from his usual output.

It's sort of like his music for King Kong crossed with "Pawnee Attack" from Dances with Wolves.

There's none of the "big theme" material we expect from him.

Despite the reaction to the cover design, it's a great package from Prometheus - I understand the liner notes are especially fine.

Gee...I wonder who wrote them? Could it be...YOU?

Didn't Frank Frazetta do the poster artwork for this movie? I've always liked that poster!

I don't know what kinda crack some of you are smoking, but that is one of the coolest covers I've seen in quite some time.

You wanna talk about bad covers? Take a look at Knights of the Round Table -- all that amazing 1950's MGM poster art and they use a still? Dr Phibes Rises Again (is that Vincent Price or did someone spill Gatorade on the negative). One of my releases, Uncorked (insert numerous Minnie Driver pouty jokes here). The Package (talk about not even trying to come up with ANYTHING remotely related to "cover art")!

I, for one, prefer "art" rather than stills from the films. Most movie posters blow nowadays with the exception of anything by Struzan (a lone warrior trapped in a land of photoshop).

Kudos to whomever said yes to that original art for the project. I mean, really -- would you rather a big close up of Charles Bronson wearing shades? I didn't think so.

BTW, great covers as of late -- Captain From Castile, Soylent Green, Chouans, and Dark Crystal. Oh, and I personally dig From Beyond. . .but that's just me being biased.

Regards,

MV Gerhard

I'm one hundred percent behind you. When there's a painting or drawing to be used, I think it adds a classier look. BREAKOUT, SILVER STREAK, THE CHALLENGE, that's the stuff I'm talking about. I like the cover on WHITE BUFFALO. I'm very curious about the score. Some seem quite excited by it, others have said it's the most boring Barry score they've heard. I hope the former is correct.

Let's just say I'm not a Barry nut and this score didn't change my opinion about his stuff one way or another. The movie is GOD AWFUL and the music didn't help it. However, I'd pick up the cd just for the cover alone!

When I said 'I don't care about the cover', I was basically saying it's the music that counts for me, I actually think the cover is very good!

One of the worst covers ever has to be for Christopher Gordon's excellent score to ON THE BEACH.
