Visting the Cincinnati Pops website I found out that Kunzel will be recording a CD of suites from films by Rósza. Then in May he´ll conduct a program featuring Rósza´s music.Cincinnati Pops 2003-2004 season

That's great news!! Kunzel's recordings of music from EL CID and BEN-HUR on The Great Fantasy Adventure Album and Hollywood's Greatest Hits, respectively, are fantastic.Of course, as always, I'm having fearful premonitions of hearing a synthesizer in suites from Spellbound and The Lost Weekend instead of a real theremin. I hope someone gives Rob Schwimmer a call.

This is great news, indeed!! Unrecorded music from EL CID would be a superb gift to filmmusic collectors. His recording of "Entry of the Nobles" is superior to the one done by Elmer Bernstein, in my ear.BB

You can never have enough performances of Rozsa's music. I'm not a huge fan of Kunzel, but I will look into this one!

I overlooked this, this is very interesting:quote:

The first one was announced a few weeks back by High Fidelity Review as Epics to be released on CD and SACD.

I really wish Spellbound was represented better on CD. It looks like an old re-recording that Ray Heindorf did was released on CD in the late 1980s but that's long gone. I own one enjoyable track from this recording on the Sonic Images Gone With the Wind disc, but I feel it's just a tease. Is everybody scared to re-record this because of the theremin or is it because the music is pretty much monothematic and a bit repetitive? I watched the movie recently and it seemed like the score was mostly the theme repeated again and again, but it still seemed like something that would make a decent standalone listen.

Can't ya just wait till the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra records the complete music of Max Steiner, Morton Gould, Bernard Herrmann and Dmitry Shostakovich?

I like Kunzel a lot. Although, in some of his versions of film music that I went ga-ga over initially, repeated listening has pointed out the cracks. Still, his version of El Cid does indeed outshine Elmer's and it'll be interesting to hear just what Rozsa winds up under his baton.

Lou,I tend to share your opinion about Kunzel. His output is uneven. HOLLYWOOD'S GREATEST HITS, for example, is an inferior one. The FANTASY themes compilation is particularly good. I have been listening to the MEGA THEMES compilation, which I obtained at a discount price, recently. The intitial impression is, wow!, but repeated listenings reveal some lazy interpretations of the original themes. I lean towards the viewpoint that the problem is in the reconstructions, not the conducting. That is just an avid layman's opinion.
As the Rozsa content was recorded over a 12 month period, and is 'in the can', so to speak, does anyone have the scoop on the content of this disc?
The announced content for the EPICS theme concert, subsequent to the September release of the CD, leans towards KING OF KINGS, BEN-HUR, and QUO VADIS, but no mention of EL CID.

Avie Hern, AKA perfpitch, AKA originalthinkr, good fellow in many ways (though you will hear opposing opinions), a knowledgeable man who has strong beliefs and states them in ways that tend to ruffle feathers. He was relieved of his sign-on privileges at FSM for daring to utter a political opinion when all such opinions are strictly verboten. Since political discussion did not *seem* to be a problem here, it looked as though Avie was doing okay. Obviously something changed, but those who know ain't sayin'.If anyone can fill us in on this, I'd appreciate it.

Gee, SirT, I don't seem to recall any special fondness between yourself and Original while on the FSM board ? As I recall, even as a liberal, he was not a huge fan of your native land. (France) And many of your posts. But how open minded of you now to seek out HIS posts..This is a shocker...But a nice one .. I guess..

Jim,Thanks for your kind response. Avie is a friend and I did contact him, directly, to determine his reading on what was
happening. I will not get into the suspected politics, as I have no direct evidence of a 'smoking gun', but apparently he is no longer able to post at MM.I had checked the Miklos Rozsa Forum, yesterday, when I suspected something was amiss and Avie, indeed, was posting there concerning a recent interlocution with William Wyler's daughter, Catherine.
Avie is one of those idiosyncratic, principled, rogue intellects who are a vital element in a healthy community - warts, and all. Unfortunately, like the prophets of old, they sometimes cause considerable discomfort, with their views and quirks, among those who are lesser lights, ethically and intellectually. It does not speak well for the quality of tolerance, particularly when the quorks get abstracted from the free-flowing stream of internet messaging.
To Avie: Be well, fellow traveller.

Why is it that everybody is acting like "Avie" has passed away? The guy's been banned from posting on a message board and people are acting like it's a funeral here.

Also, in this country, censorship and the curtailment of an individual's right to express himself is taken very seriously.

I don't think any moderator will be able to shut up this man. This is not the first time

Telarc has set a Spring 2005 release date for the Rozsa album, according to this article.quote:
from High Fidelity Review
Miklos Rozsa's Three Choral Suites
Cincinnati Pops Orchestra & Mormon Tabernacle Choir with Erich Kunzel, Conductor
"Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops take on Miklos Rózsa, one of the 20th Century's greatest film composers and three-time Academy Award winner, in this world premiere recording. Kunzel and the Pops bring Rózsa's Three Choral Suites to life on this massive recording featuring the magnificent Mormon Tabernacle choir. This was Rózsa's final project before his death in 1995, with sixty minutes of music based on the scores of "Quo Vadis?" "Ben Hur" and "King of Kings."Sounds like a good companion to Newman's The Man of Galilee.

I haven't heard this disc yet. I'm glad it's out and yet....I'm disappointed that we're getting choral music from these already way too over-recorded film scores rather than say the kind of suites that Rozsa himself recorded for DRG and Polydor or that Gerhardt did for RCA. I welcome any Rozsa conducted well with open arms but this isn't what I had in mind when I first heard about the project.
