    Hello to the group,

Well, this is a nice batch. I'm sure the release of "Predator" made well over 3000 people happy, and I actually believe there's a good chance that this disc will sell out rather quickly.

The latest club release that intrigues me the most is Jerry Goldsmith's "Justine," which was composed in his prime (which was, in my opinion, the nineteen-sixties). I haven't heard a note of this score before but I would love to hear opinions from those who have the original release or have seen the film.

    Best Regards,
    Dylan

    Hey Dylan,
I just pulled out an old tape of Justine that I have and gave it a listen for the first time in ages. It's another quality score, nothing brilliant, but a fascinating listen. I've never seen the film itself, but it obviously has some mid-eastern, arabic element, the music is reflective of this. Listening to it after all this time, I hear bits of The Wind and the Lion and even The Mummy and The 13th Warrior in it - but the score that it reminds me of the most strangely enough is QBVII. (Maybe a bit of Masada too) The main theme is nice enough and the more upbeat material sounds like a kind of Arabic crossed with a Jewish tone like QBVII - that probably sounds stupid and may be way off base, but that's my initial impression on hearing it again. I'd be interested to hear what other people think. Overall I'd say it's definately going to be another worthwhile purchase for every Goldsmith fan, despite the fact that it's not a top-of-the-line score in the master's canon of work.

I've the LP of the album, the second half of this CD. It's marvelous. The JUSTINE LP is good in ways that QB VII is good - eclectic, and extremely melodic. Bought sound unheard, this should not disappoint.

I'm anxious to hear the film cues, myself. With THE FURY, the film cues were a revelation, and an improvement, compared with the re-recording. Those two work as companion pieces, so I'm glad that this time they've used the extra space on the CD to include the re-recording as well.

    David

    WOOOOHOOOOO!

Predator was one I have been dying for (I just made a post about it recently). Good thing I didn't shell out the cash for the boot

Hope this means Alien could be on the way. Back To The Future...120 orchestra players=lots of union fees so I'm not holding my breath.

Predator! FINALLY!! Thanks Varèse. You're the best.

I knew it! A 'spy' informed me that they bought the rights from Fox a while ago

I wonder what the difference is with the boots...

This is great news about Predator! I have the "shoe" of Predator but I'm still gonna buy this professional release! I'd do the same for Back to the Future and Alien as wel (hint hint). From the track titles, it appears that much of the shorter cues have been put together which is great. Having Goldenthal/Newman's Alien3 fanfare will be pretty sweet too. Can't believe how long it's been that I've waited for a release of this score!

It seems Predator has a total running time of 73:08. Minus the 20th Century Fox fanfare it comes to 72:41 of score. Therefore it contains 3 minutes of more original score than the boots that contained 69:37 of score!

My guess is that track 12 "Building A Trap" is the extra track that was not on the boots.

I also have had the b**t since around 1997, I think, but will still buy this special release to hear the extra cues, the more "official" end titles and I am curious about how the shorter tracks have been crossfaded together. Plus I must support the great endeavor Varese has taken with this release. And JUSTINE sounds pretty great as well - I love QBVII, it is such an underrated gem from Goldsmith and I love any of his scores which pay homage to his Jewish heritage.

    The Wonderful Country.

Fantastic. Good to see bootlegs don't affect Varese's decisions on marginal limited editions like this (one that might excite 5 people at most). Now I can own this one on CD... a very good thing.

So let's see...you didn't like the few snippets on the LP album, much of which was re-recorded, but you're going to poo-pooh the entire project which includes the total original soundtrack on one of the two CDs?

    Unheard?

May you learn how fantastic this score is and find it no longer available!

While were (briefly, of course) on the subject of the..."shoe" , can anyone tell me the origin of that track before the "End Credits"? Was this a cue that was written for the final scene? One theory of mine suggests that this music was replaced with the funeral trumpet.

Dylan, who are those 3,000 people? Are they the ones who don't buy up all the FSM and Varese discs as soon as they are announced?

i think it's more likely that only about 500 people who will snatch it up right away. Some will be multiple buyers and the title may see 1,500 disappear in the early going.
Once the sci-fi marketplace becomes aware of it, then it will disappear...so get it while the getting is good.

I know the success of "The Towering Inferno" and "The Omega Man" make it seem like "popular" titles will sell out quickly, but the fact is that those titles sold in a wider marketplace than film music fans.

Dunno, but I just love seeing...

    Shipping total: $5.50

...on my receipt from Varese for three CDs sent via one of the slowest possible services for transporting CDs between California and Maine. I want USPS Priority mail or at least first class for that price, damnit!

I figure that if they start shipping on 08/19/03 then my order should be shipped by 08/22/03. After that, I will expect to get my CDs by 09/19/03. That way when they (hopefully) arrive before 09/19/03, I'll be a happy camper and will convince my insane mind that the shipping 'option' of UPS Ground that I 'chose' was super speedy, a fabulous value, and an overall fantastic idea.

    Gee, you didn't know?

    1. John Williams is extremely popular across a broad spectrum of musical tastes, and he's extremely collectible.

    2. One of his most-popular, most-coveted scores on CD in its ORIGINAL form is "The Towering Inferno." Ditto "The Poseidon Adventure."

"The Towering Inferno" has an amazing fan base.

Yup... funny you mention that JJ - my Varese package, ordered on the 12th, was scheduled for delivery on the 13th. The UPS guy was here, it was on his truck, but he was a dumb head and didn't bring it in. And so, it's "out for delivery" again today. Keep in mind I could have more easily driven down to Ventura Blvd. and bought my cds in person. UPS *does* suck for this kind of thing.

Ugh, and now I discover that they've been trying to deliver it across the street!!! Geesh, that's Varese's fault, not UPS. My order confirmation has the correct address, but apparently the sticker doesn't. Hopefully those kinds of problems aren't happening with any other orders. That could lead to some big time frustration.

Advice: Call UPS and confirm with them that the address on the package is indeed your address.
