I'm not understanding something... I just saw the new trailer for this film. It features vocals by Gerrard and uses a variation of the theme heard in the teaser. Yet at the end of the trailer, it says Music by John Debney. Why would Gerrard only be writing music for the trailer?

There is seldom any connection at all between trailer music and the film score, as demonstrated by the proliferation of trailers using excerpts from a certain few already-existing film scores (how many trailers for "inspiring" films feature music from THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, for example???). Indeed, the use of Gerrard's whining drones in the trailer may have been the source of the rumor (false, as it turns out) that she was involved in scoring the film. (Just one possible scenario, BTW -- I have no real info to support that.)

Maybe they used what ever cue she had wrote for whatever project she had done before?

That's what I am thinking. And Dana, the difference between these trailers and the ones that use The Shawshank Redemtion is that Shawshank is an actual score. This isn't from anything Lisa has done (as far as I know) and i am sure this music wasn't just written for the trailer. Lisa doesn't write music for trailers (at least not before this if this was actually written specifically for the trailer). I am not sure why Mel would have her come in and write the trailer music and not the score to the film. Which is why I agree with HadrianD, this is probably her score that she wrote for the film.

Clayton, you're making an awfully big assumption. Composers are hired to write music for trailers all the time. Just because we film music fans aren't always privied to that information, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. As far as I'm concerned, unless someone really knows the answer to the question: "Is the music in the trailer specifically for the trailer?", then I think discussing it is entirely moot. It's only gonna lead to pointless conjecture.

But Dana makes a very good point in her post.

Yes I know composers are hired to write for trailers all the time, but ussually not film composers. How often does a film composer write trailer music without writing the score to the film?

Dana, did you get a sex change? Your wife and son must be horrified, but this means we can definitely go shopping sometime.

HAHAHA, oh my gosh. I'm sorry Dana. What a terrible assumption on my part... I hope you'll accept my apology.

Of course, it shouldn't keep you from taking up Joan's shopping offer. If I lived closer to her, I'd certainly go.

Well, it's not an unheard of practice, Clayton. Silvestri most recently wrote the music for the Polar Express trailer. Jerry Goldsmith did the original Judge Dredd trailer, when he was scheduled to do the flick. JNH's music from Dinosaur and Atlantis were both used for their respective trailers. Justin Burnett wrote music for his Dungeons and Dragons. Now, yeah, these composers went on to score the films (except Jerry), but I don't think it's an entirely dismissable idea. I could care less if Lisa Gerrard, or whoever for that matter, was attached. If she was, it wasn't official by any means. My thoughts are that it was just a rumor, that she may have been considered to do the film, but in this case, is no longer, or never was. Perhaps she decided to decline. For whatever reason, John Debney is now behind the helm, and unless he's bumped off, will be the only composer who's officially been attached to the film.

    Tada.

Why go back and forth, arguing about a subject no one really has any facts on (yet)? It's kind of silly. It's especially silly to take a stance on it, unless you've got rock, solid facts. And, if anyone does, it's silly to take a stance on a subject with a group of goofballs who don't have a clue. Yes, I'm a part of that group -- proclaimed goofball here, folks.

I considered that once, as a means of losing a lot of weight in one fell swoop . I'd love to go shopping with you, Joan, at Footlights, or SuperCollector, but I'm afraid the Mall of the Americas is out!

Dana, I think your contemplation of such massive weight loss (all at once) has you a wee bit rattled.
