There are many movies about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The newest MovieMusic poll asks for your favorite score of the five films:

Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ
    The Greatest Story Ever Told
    Jesus Christ Superstar
    The Last Tempation of Christ
    The Passion of the Christ

The scores above each have very individual characteristics; characteristics that must certainly agree or disagree with your own personal enjoyment and preference when it comes to the kind of movie score you like.

Which is your favorite, and why? The thoughts from your mind that pull you closer to one or further from another would be interesting for everyone reading.

Criticism of this list is to be expected. Are there glaring omissions? The films above represent box office winners and are films most seen by Hollywood audiences since their release. But barring popularity, certainly some great music has been written for less-than-successful Jesus films.

    THE KING OF KINGS
    THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST

Just about covers both styles of scoring the life and times of JC.

    Peter,

None of your choices. Instead, I'll go for:

    Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter

I mention this one because you didn't mention it and because it's vastly different than any of the above scores, and to cause mischief.

Well... any list that manages to leave off fine scores like King of Kings (Rosza), Jesus of Nazareth (Jarre), The Gospel of John (Danna) and The Robe (Newman) is arguably missing the best of the bunch!

Interesting Peter. What about the Robe?

I like them all except for Last Temptation one. John.

Yes, there was one other qualification for scores making the final cut:

    - one score per composer

King of Kings and The Robe were right up there at the top, but were dropped after considering which of the multiple scores/one composer was the better one.

Why? Not a big fan of 20-option polls. Dilutes things too much (there's always going to be something missing, even with 20 choices).

Is The Robe the better Alfred Newman score, or The Greatest Story Ever Told?

    The Robe!

The Greatest Story Ever Told is a very good film score, but it's too "Thin-Red-Liney"; serene, thoughtful, more realistic in its message. The Robe has everything a great film score should have: all the thoughtful serenity of TGSET, but with a lot more bombast, and one of the best "Love Themes" ever written.

The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe! The Robe!

    The Robe.

In my mind, when I think of music of the live of Jesus, I think of Maurice Jarre's score for the TV series, Jesus of Nazareth.

From the list I'd say Ben Hur.

If it's the one scored by Patrick Williams, the show might not have been great, but the score deserves more attention than it gets.

There's also that crappy Mary, Mother of Jesus score by Ken Thorne from 1999's NBC mini series.

But as I said, it was crappy.

Finally saw The Passion of the Christ yesterday. Loved it.

I thought Debney's music was great on CD, but on screen - wow. Impressive stuff.

I thought the most memorbale scenes were Peter's Denial, Mary runs to Jesus, the Crucifixion (which was done superbly IMO) and the ending.

I still love Jesus of Nazareth - the two are unique in their own ways and both accomplish what they set out to. But for sheer listening pleasure I have to go for Debney's CD.

Peter, excuse my complete nincompoop ignorance (plus the fact I've had a few beers - it's Saturday night here) - How does one actually vote on those polls? I couldn't find an option to click on the results page. Dumbo me. But I'll tell you what I think anyway - Of the choices given (GOOD idea to limit them - there's one for each musical style), I'd go for BEN-HUR (with Alf Newman's GREATEST G EVER T in second place, but really on the same level).

    Cheers Graham!

The main poll page shows the archive of polls. Along the right side of this page in the light green is the current poll. This poll is viewable on every page of the website except for message board pages....

Once you see the poll, you click on the selection you like.

The main poll page is reached from the message boards at the very top of all the message board pages.... one of the eight little green ones at the top.

    Or, here.

That's a easy one. Peter Gabriel's "The Passion" score for "The Last Temptation of Christ" is unconventional, creative, beautiful and sounds eexcellent.

Haven't heard Debney's score, or seen the movie.

IMHO, the 2 finest Biblical soundtracks are "Ben-Hur" and "King Of Kings". But I also admit that the music is highly personal to me for various reasons, so I understand if others disagree.
Ironically, if I remember correctly, Rozsa considered the "Kings" soundtrack to be an inferior work of his and was never pleased with it. I disagree: it is a stunning piece of composing and I am absolutely thrilled to have gotten it on CD after all these years. Actually, I have 2 different CD's of it, the second being a double-disc set I picked up a few months ago.

What about Andrew Lloyd Webber/ Tim Rice's 'Jesus Christ Superstar' brought to the screen by Norman Jewison. The pop approach really works IMO.

Frankly, I did not liked the musical, however I kinda a liked a couple of songs, and one of them I think it's pretty good, the one that Magdalene sings.

Easy choice: Passion by Peter Gabriel (which is the soundtrack to Last Temptation of Christ) is one of my favorite CDs ever.

The use of ethnic musicians, percussion, synthesizers, wordless singing and breathtaking atmosphere combine in a fantastic piece of music.
