The one with the Spanish lady. Monserrat Caballé her name is. Can't remember the title. Don't even know if it's still available.

I have his 'Themes' CD wich is sort of a Greatest Hits (pre-1989) and has some great pieces on it.

Sticking to scores rather than original works like The Tao of Love and El Greco or his Jon & Vangelis albums, I'd have to say the two that thrilled me the most were OPERA SAUVAGE (for TV) and ANTARCTICA (a very neat film too if you ever see it). I love other scores and themes but some like CHARIOTS OF FIRE got so overplayed that I can't listen to them now even if I would say they are great.

Lou, you beat me to it. I was going to nominate ANTARCTICA as my favorite Vangelis score. I happened upon it accidentally while pawing through the bargin bins several years ago. I think I listened to it a dozen times before I was finally able to catch the movie on HBO. I still pull out this cassette on particularly cold commutes to work.

Great score -- nice little movie, too. It's time I checked to see if I can find it for rent somewhere.

I'll probably have to join Netflix.

ANTARCTICA should be added and I have not heard EL GRECO. I most certainly agree with all of the above. Everyone should also run out and buy the DVD of MYTHODEA, a multimedia visual treat. Well worth it. I haven't heard the complete score of ALEXANDER other than the bit on the website. I usually prefer to watch a film first and hear the music in its intended medium before buying the cd.

    1492: Conquest Of Paradise

    plus...

The Bounty (opening/closing credits on the Themes compilation)

    and of course Blade Runner

if you can find a used copy of Themes, it's a good sampling of his music (minus 1492)

Marc, I didn't figure our common ground these days was to be found on Antarctica!

Although the version available on vhs (maybe dvd too now I don't know) is English dubbed, ANTARCTICA is this very strange but wonderful Japanese film about two sled dogs that get seperated from their team and spend the long Antarctic winter struggling to survive. It's a very odd idea for a movie that somehow works really well.

Vangelis's score has a beautiful theme that I have yet to grow tired of. There is also a cue, Kinematic, which underscores a scene of the dogs running that is just phenomenal.

Yeah, That's the part I play when I'm toolin' down the highway to work.

Other parts are good when I'm stuck in traffic.

Regarding the dubbing. I don't recall there being much need for it. The best parts had no dialog.

I was thinking that Hadrian would probably do best with the themes album. I went on-line to see what Vangelis discs were in print and found something called Odyssey which is another themes album but expanded to include a few extra newer & previously unreleased cuts and this looks like the superior selection. It doesn't contain the Kinematic cue I mentioned above but it contains all the great Vangelis themes (including 1492 and Mythodea) and is probably the best place to start.

    Thanks for looking out.

I have a few Vangelis album, Blade Runner, 1492, Mythodea, and Alexander. 1492 is the best album. I'm a bit disappointed in the Alexander album due to the amount Zimmerism in the score.

And I always thought Zimmer was playing at being Vangelis?!

NP : Secret Of The Sahara - Morricone...excellent score!

    HadrianD,

If perchance you haven't seen 'The Bounty' or haven't seen it in awhile, it's worth a rental. For a long time the movie was only avail on a terrible VHS transfer at EP (6 hrs compressed -> 2 hrs), which lost much of the visual quality. A couple yrs ago it was finally re-released on DVD and the xfer is great.

'The Bounty' features a young Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins, Daniel Day Lewis and Liam Neeson... all before they became big names in Hollywood. The score is quite good, just the right blend of atmospheric and light theme (unmistakeably Vangelis).

The ship's arrival at Tahiti alone is worth the price of a rental, not to mention the luau.

I think I own all of Vangelis' albums...every one I can get my hands on, at least. Even some hard-to-find ones...

Without a doubt, my most listened to album (whether movie or studio) is 1492. If I had to only choose one to take with me to an island, this would be the one (unless I could burn a compilation ).

There are no seconds for me with Vangelis - they're all second, because each album has tracks that I absolutely love.

There are exceptions, however: I was very disappointed with Mythodea and, to some extent, Alexander (One Morning at Pella and Tender Memories are my favorite tracks, to give you some context for my Vangelis tastes). El Greco is the most recent full album that I've actually listened to extensively.

I just wish he put out more of his work
