Yay! I'm downloading Shore's score to 'The Departed' from iTunes now (I WILL NOT wait until December 5th, although I do like to have physical Shore scores).I've been looking forward to this one for the better part of a year!

I wonder what the chances are that for some future rerelease of LOTR, PJ will use the score as HS recorded it, and dispense with all the tracking and alterations we've discussed here.

Gkgyver:The legality may be a bit dicy, but you can purchase from the US iTunes Store if you can somehow procure a US-based PayPal account or credit card, bank account, etc. iTunes isn't terribly stringent on verification that their US-store customers are actually in the US.
Or you could wait.
I'd hate to add fuel to the fire, but The Departed is sounding very solid so far. Track three is solo acoustic guitar, and it's one of the more moving melodies Shore has composed. The tango in the first and last tracks is marvelous.

Tango you say? Acoustic guitar? Sounds good already! It's too bad I have to live on a shoe string budget for the time being!>>>>>A question for you Doug!
As your book will be released hopefully in the near future will there be material concerning the scoring process or is the book going to focus purely on the music. I mean are there any insights from the composer and director and delving into the recording sessions. I know that there is enough material in the music itself to fill a book but will there be any behind-the-scenes sort of stuff there.>>>Yes, indeed. There while quite a bit that relates to the Making Of side of things.<<<<
This will be wonderful! The documentary in the EE films showcasing Howard Shore and how he developed the score were good but I've always wanted to see and know more about his process and how he came about each theme. It always seemed like those parts of the documentaries were a lot shorter than say Bigatures or Soundscapes featurettes.

>>>In FOTR:CR, track 8 (A Conspiracy Unmasked) from 4:49 - 5:00 (very strongly) and continuing uptil 5:30, which in the movie is Gandalf telling Frodo "You must leave. And leave quickly" there's this "theme" that plays along; which is repeated again in ROTK, when Gandalf tells Pippin "Peregrin Took, my lad, there is a task to be done. Another opportunity for one of the Shire-folk to prove their great worth!">>>There’s something to this, but not quite what you have in mind. The ROTK notes will shed some light.
Hmmm, I though there was a connection there, now I'm anticipating ROTK:CR even more
Hey Doug, just a question for you (if you can answer it, otherwise ignore the following). WIll your book have an antiquated look like the annotated score? Will it be a hardcover/deluxe book? Not that I'll be able to afford it even if it is, but it'll be good to know its on the market.

Nice update DA.I actually meant Howard Shore.I don't know why i wrote HW.
Ceau?Italian or some east-european ignored latin language?(Italian is Ciao)But "Harry in winter" is a waltz according to its alternate title:"Harry in love Waltz".
Matthijs,by your name i presume that you're from north,Flanders. If Vlams Belang takes over the norh in an unprecedent coup d'etat and proclames independence, then maybe TTT:CR won't be delivered on time in Flanders,so you won't be the first person in Belgium to own it.
Ciau for now.

There was an alternative there!? I suppose you mean that it’s going to be with the rarities discs (I don’t know if I shed it correctly)
I can’t wait!
A question for Doug (not only for TTT)
What about the music that it wasn’t on the OST, and it was then Changed in the EE version. For explain in ROTK when Aragorn charge with the army of the Dead it plays the Gondor theme with a heroic finale until Legolas climb the Mumak. In the EE version the Gondor theme is interrupted by scenes with Gothmog and Eowyn and then comes the heroic finale. I suppose that we will get the EE version, but what about the other version? And I am talking about all this kind of alternative tracks? There are going to be on the other Disks?

Or what about the scene when the Nazguls come down on Minas Tirith and the choir that accompanies them?In the EE there was one shot that might have lenghtened the Ringwraith Theme:A Nazgul klling gondorian soldiers on the main wall. It's just about 3-4 seconds(of music too) but it's still longer than the same choir piece from "The Fields of Pelennor".

I think you'll most likely be dissapointed. As far as Howard Shore is concerned, the EE are the films how they were meant to be seen in the first place, so I don't think any theatrical version will ever be on the CRs.But I could be wrong of course.

It sounds very Castilian (Spanish), and some tracks are just solo guitar with very tender playing. Beautiful. I don't have a whole lot of time though, so I haven't finished listening to it yet.

Very interesting re. the Harry in Winter Waltz. I wasn't aware that a common time piece could be defined as a waltz. I guess ya learn something new every day!

Beren,First of all : Flams Belang hasn't won the elections (to be precise, they only have a majority in some minor cities)
And what I also liked to say, there is something like the cordon sanitaire which makes sure that such an organisation will NEVER will reign our country.
I know this has nothing to do with soundtracks, but I felt I had to react on that. And about the TT CR : it will come out in Belgium just as FOTR CR did. I was talking about the book that Doug wrote.
But thanks for answering

"Gandalf The White" is actually 7 minutes long? Is there THAT much of unused material? Holy Cow!
And Wraiths On Wings is 10 seconds longer as well. Now, time to dance the happy dance!
No, wait, save that for audio clips
"The Dead Marshes" is over 5 minutes? It's barely over 3 even in the extended cut!

7:58 longer than FOTR!!! When you consider the "padding" in FOTR (Plan 9 et al.) this is really quite extraordinary. Does anyone know how long FOTR would be without this "padding"? I guess this is a rather subjective thing, but it'd be nice to get an idea of exactly how much more HS composed music we're getting here.

To answer my own question, there appears to be 5:18 total Plan 9 music (Flaming Red Hair + Passing of the Elves) plus the Merry and Pippen singing. So by my best estimation (please correct me if I'm wrong) we are getting nearly 14 more minutes of HS composition in this release.

Also, the track length average is down from nearly 5 minutes from FOTR to about 4:30 for TT (37 tracks versus 45). This probably gives a good idea about the editing style and flow differences between the movies (the separation of storylines in TT).

Since the release date draws e'er near, I wanted to bring up something that I know Doug has talked about before; the unused composition for the scene in which Gandalf finally ends the Balrog's life, and is resurrected. I believe Doug had said that that music could be heard in the EE Fan Credits for TT. I just listned to it and I believe Doug said that it was the music starting at around 2hrs4mins33secs. Its a great piece of music. I especially enjoy the choral part for its very epic and beautiful qualities.
I was wondering whether it could be somehow synced to the movie (I happen to have two copies of the EE to achieve this). I tried starting the choir right when we enter Gandalf's flash back (which by the way is amazing!), but the piece is longer than the scene in the film so I wonder how it was originally scored.
That choir part, wow, I get chills everytime I hear it, and I can't wait to hear it in context with the rest of the music. My guess is that it will appear in "13. Gandalf the White".[Message edited by Shire Bagginz on 10-12-2006]

A question for DOUG.....
Hello, hello, hello....last night mine very eyes viewed a film, and through the course of the film my ears heard things......things that be words, sounds......and music.
For the film my very eyes saw and ears heard was 'Julie Taymor's 1999 'Titus'', a most stunning film (reminding me of Terry Gilliam), featuring triumphant music by Elliot Goldenthal....my ears couldn't help but hear and my mind notice the similarities that sounded like Howard Shore's LOTR....for I know many notes from many composers may in someway sound similar, but my question to you is 'Do you know if Howard Shore was in anyway 'inspired'?(this may not be the right word), or I don't know how to put it,....in-any-way moved upon, that he somehow referenced it?(I know this is the wrong word, but my mind has lost its train of thought at this moment)?????????All readers, I highly recommend this film!!!!!
Also, yesterday, in the mail, I received Howard Shore's score to 'The Client' - I haven't listened to it all yet, but I skipped my way through to a track near the end.....I was moved........and I burst forth in tears, and found myself unable to speak, as the music was more beautiful and uplifting than any words could ever possibly be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
