Oscar & Lucinda (Thomas Newman) - This is such a beautiful score. I can't wait to see the movie. And what makes it more interesting is the reading by Ralph Fiennes on the last track.

Mondays in the Sun (Lucio Godoy) - I love this music. First heard it in the movie (and what a GREAT movie!!) and searched all over for this score. Great. It has alot of tha audio from the film taking up some of the space for a short score. But, it is still worth having.

Shaun of the Dead - One of my all-time favorite comedies of 04 (next to Kung Fu Hustle) and even the soundtrack is hilarious with some of the best lines from the movie. I didn't think this soundtrack was available in the U.S., but, I'm glad I found it.

And all of em for about $6 a piece.

I don't know if there are any rules mentioning bootlegs on this board, but the other day I recieved

    Raiders Of The Ark 2CD
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 2CD
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 2CD

Raiders and Crusade are excellent sound and complete,Temple has some tracks which have only average sound and isn't quite complete. I was still pleased with it. Since most people here have probably heard much of this music I don't need to say how superb the scores are. And if they release them complete legally I'll buy them again! I had hoped they would come out when the DVD box set came out but they didn't.

Hey, I haven't done many of those lately. Though while we're at it, I recently attended Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Vienna Philharmonic's 5th. Not quite great overall (a few too many little oddities), but still really good... and amazing control over the sound. So often you hear a lot of loud noise, but can't make out the counterpoints. Better conductors control the volume to bring out the details (Thielemann comes to mind, who conducted an outstanding 7th last season). But Harnoncourt actually had the VPO playing at full blast - and you could still hear more details than on the best CDs I've heard.

The only Jochum Bruckner I have are some choral works. He's done the best Te Deum I've heard so far, but there aren't too many wortwhile recordings around really. I should try his symphonies someday, though I don't expect them to be fully great.

General recommendations remain Karajan and Wand, Celibidache (the best 7th, and his 4th coda is the best bit of music I've ever heard on CD), and Tintner (for some good budget price recordings and the best 3rd).

And Thielemann seems very promising - I won't miss his 5th and 8th in March.

Anyway, what's new for me: TTT:CR.

New in November for me would be (so far)

    David Arnold: Casino Royale
    Klaus Badelt: The Promise
Trevor Jones: The Dark Crystal [2 disc]

I've already backed-up The Dark Crystal and put the originals in a safe place.

I have quite a few more soundtracks on order which hopefully will arrive this month - Including some Randy Newman, Thomas Newman, Brian Tyler, and some Basil Poledouris (ordered the day before the sad news)

One goody at a trade-in shop and two brand new ones:

    POINT BLANK/THE OUTFIT - Johnny Mandel/Jerry Fielding
    - An FSM release that I sadly missed out on a few years ago. Looking at the link I have for the store, I noticed it's not out of print due to it's 3,000 copy run. I'm guessing there just isn't a big market for this. It doesn't discount the fact that I love it. Although the source cues from The Outfit bring some of the quality down IMO, there's still a lot of great avant garde/rock/jazz compositions by both composers (Point Blank also happens to be one of my favorite films from the 60s).

    THE PRESTIGE - David Julyan
    - I tried to restrain myself, I really did. I made myself an early promise not to buy this CD; and I failed. Or did I? I've seen the movie three times at the cinema now (and it hasn't lost it's edge) which ultimately made pick this up. In the film, this music heightens the atmospehere (especially during the final sequences) so much that it's remarkable. On disc, it's the same as with Memento. The music is so simple and so effective that I can easily match the cues up with the particular action on screen. And that, to me, is a great blend of scoring and direction.

    CASINO ROYALE - David Arnold
    - Listening to this now, I'm in complete love. This is the David Arnold I missed on Die Another Day (better yet, he only showed up for a few cues). The music here is very intense, perfect for thie reinvention of Bond. Although I haven't heard the "Bond theme" in glory yet, I'm expecting it to show it's nose near the end; and I'm fine with that.

Hey Franz, looks like you're filling in on your Desplat collection.

I think UNE CHANCE SURE DEUX is probably one of, if not his best, score. I also enjoyed the DESPLAT/AUDIARD CD. LA FEMME DU COMSONAUT, along with REINE DU JOUR are probably his weakest releases.

My November list should be up later today. I'm now going to the poor house having spent $175 at Tower Records Close Out sale yesterday, $75 at Second Spin on Sunday and more online filling in missing CDs from my Basil Poledouris collection, eBay, Varese and MovieMusic.com's store.

    YIKES!

Tough call on Memoirs being better than Munich]; I haven't listened to either since the beginning of the year (thus discounting Munich as my initial favorite of 2005) but only a few cues from Memoirs really impacted me. Seven Years in Tibet it ain't. Anyways, I've been on a role this week:

    ROVING MARS - Philip Glass
    - Look a little furthur into my soul and you'll find a serious Glass fanatic. I've never had trouble accessing anything he's done nor felt anything was a lesser effort from him. Roving Mars continues the streak. It's nothing too mind-boggling, but the music here is very melodic and beautiful. I enjoy Sigur Ros as a band and the final track by them, "Glosoli", is a nice addition from their latest album.

    THE DESCENT - David Julyan
    - Julyan is growing on me; earlier in the Fall I picked up my first score by him, Memento, and really enjoyed it. I got The Prestige this week and it's become a favorite this year. I thought this would be a nice addition to my growing collection. It's very effective in the film, although I'm sure most of it will be atmospheric. I remember a lovely solo trumpet theme and I can't wait to hear it on the album. Unfortunately, I'm still too busy listening to Casino Royale to give this one any attention.

No...I wish. I just went a little CD crazy this month (and it's only half over).

GAUDI is a good APP album and I got it to fill in my collection. I used to have them all on LP and I'm trying to convert to CD as I see them cheap.

My favorite APP albums are still TURN OF A FRIENDLY CARD, EVE and EYE IN THE SKY.

Thanks, nut score! I've been pretty lucky this month. I won it offa eBay Sunday and just got it this evening. I was waitin for someone to snipe it from me. I waited the last 30 mins, just refreshing the page. Got down to 8 secs and I couldn't believe it.
Guess people were waitin to see the Simpsons movie trailer during the episode. I dunno. Just lucky.

    Listening to it right now.

If you're going to re-buy the collection on CD, I suggest you wait a bit, because all the studio albums are being released very soon - with enhanced sound and even a bonus track or two. Kinda frustrating for me, since I already have all of them on regular CD. So I have to seriously consider this.

As far as "Live" in concerned, this is the only live album they released (if you disregard the "Live in Madrid" DVD that was only released through Parsons' website). There are differences between the European and American release, though. They have different cover art and the American release includes three bonus tracks that the European does not: "When", "Take the Money and Run" and Chris Thompson's famous 80's anthem "You're the Voice".

Although this isn't exactly a score purchase, I wanted to make a note on the Forbidden Planet DVD that Warner just put out. I'm watching it now and this is such a staple of sci-fi filmmaking. The picture and sound are incredible. It's obvious that DVD was the desired output for EastmanColor.

Any fans of 50s sci-fi out there? Get this right now. If only Paramount would've treated The War of the Worlds with this respect (I think the picture quality is a big let down).

I agree... FEMME DU COMSONAUT wasn't a favourite - or not nearly as interesting as his usual stuff. It's still good, and doesn't really sound too much like anything else he's done (something I like about him - even his four action scores I've heard - Firewall, Nid de Guepes, Hostage and Une Chance have pretty tenuous musical links).

Found VOLVER fantastic. Gee Iglesias does his thing so well.

    Purchased more this month...

Kingdom Of Heaven (Gregson-Williams) Excellent choral work!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Williams) Reminds me of Home Alone and the weaker parts of Hook. I had to have one Potter score in my collection.

Myst IV: Revelation (Wall) Still in the mail. I can't wait.

    I found some great ones:

    THE FOUNTAIN - Clint Mansell
    - You can read my full review on the link under the comments section.

    BIRTH - Alexandre Desplat
    - I'm a budding Desplat fan. After his work in Hostage I knew he had talent. Syriana cemented it IMO. Firewall was a good listen, but wholly disappointing compared to the two aforementioned. I'm going back into his catalog and this one comes highly recommended. I really felt the score in the film so I can't wait to hear it on its own.

FOR LOVE OF THE GAME - Basil Poledouris
    - Given recent events, I couldn't pass this one up. I might have overlooked this being quite a fan of Basil's work after the slam-bang trio of Conan the Barbarian, Robocop, and The Hunt for Red October (and later Farewell to the King and Red Dawn) but Poledouris was a fantastically gifted composer. I'll cherish this one.

    GREAT EXPECTATIONS - Patrick Doyle
    - I love Doyle, so this was another one I couldn't pass up. I haven't listened to it yet, but the comments on the link are promising.

THE ELEPHANT MAN - John Morris
    - This is my favorite David Lynch film, and another find that I'm proud of. I can't wait to stop listening to The Fountain, because this is first on my playlist.

NORTH BY NORTHWEST - Bernard Herrmann
    - After Vertigo, this is my favorite Hitchcock film. Herrmann's score is, of course, stuff of film music legend.

    * Also of note: I picked up the new Beatles' album, Love, and I have to exclaim my praise for it. George Martin has finally found his way back home producing this album that is a wonderful mash-ups and remixes (don't let those words scare you, like I thought they would me) of their greatest work. It's very reminiscent of Danger Mouse's The Grey Album (itself a classic). Don't be skeptical, this one is great.
