Like Doyle's recent 'Eragon', I'm not impressed yet, but I'm going to give it more tiiiimmmmmeeeeee....

That being said, Trevor Rabins' 'Flyboys' is so unashamedly derivative I don't think I can stomach it. Talk about completely aping Williams' 'Saving Private Ryan' and, more specifically, 'The Patriot' (within the main theme, no less!).

These are superficial complaints that I hope will be glossed over after I begin to like the score more as a whole. Seemed to get a lot better reviews than I'm used to seeing from Rabin scores (*** 1/2's...), so it's gotta be worth something.

    Who likes this score?

I like it very much. Its more like The Great Raid than anything else he's written. Which, in my opinion isn't necessarily a good or bad thing, but in most people's opinion, that's a good thing.

But I like virtually everything from Rabin. The only one I don't like (that has been released on CD) off the top of my head is The Sixth Day.

I saw the film . . . it was pretty awful. It had Dean Devlin's stench all over it (he was a producer).

    tjguitar,

I haven't been up to date at all lately with current film scores or Rabin's output of the last few years, but I always have liked him. I even think his score for 'Con Air' is reasonably enjoyable, and have always respected 'Armageddon' for what it was. And though I remember the album for 'The 6th Day' being pretty dull, I still think that "Adam's Theme" from that score is one of his peak moments as a film composer. I never saw 'The Great Raid' -- never even heard of it, heh.

    nuts,

I don't really have any intention on seeing the film. But I do like Jean Reno.

And up until only very recently I thought it was Jude Law in the lead role, not James Franco. Why? Sorry, but [especially at quick glance], Law comes to mind before any other Hollywood actor...

Think they were trying to snag an extra buck or two?

Jude Law is Box Office Death, so I think they not only saved some money, but made more in the process (though not much!)

Well, Jude Law is British, for one, and the film was about Americans...No, I'm not saying he couldn't pull off a convincing American portrayal, but he really already did the retro thing with "Sky Captain"...this was a different kind of film, and it was actually very well done. Formulaic war film, but if you went to see this, it was really for the visuals. Seeing quality CGI applied to a World War I air battle was very worthwhile on the big screen. If you're into that sort of thing. I am. I enjoy seeing old airplanes in action, though. But, like "Pearl Harbor", this had a fair veneer of gloss on it--Rabin's score included, so, all in all, not for everyone, particularly not the cynical. But, again, if you're willing to give a little to some visual quasi-patriotic grandstanding, but moreso "wonder of flight"-type visuals...it's really worthwhile.

Tje Great Raid is based on the true story of the rescue of the pow camp in the Philippines in WW II. It stars Benjamin Bratt. It came out a year or so ago. The score isnt too bad. Flyboys looked kind of dopey in the promos. Very poor CGI stuff in it and cartoon effects similar to Pearl Harbor. Cannot compare with the great dogfights in Blue Max from 66.
