Welcome to the forum Nate. Thanks for the update Doug! I can't (well can) wait to listen to the full score for ROTK.I must admit I never really liked the LOTR music at first but I promised myself to give the scores a chance when their complete recordings came out and boy do I love the music, it's awesome! However I too don't just listen to LOTR all the time. I only listen to it once in a while but it's still always fun to listen to when I do.

It's interesting to note the amount of energy in the score for the night-time sequence in 'The Dead Marshes' scene. In the finished film, the score is replaced with ambient sound effects. This, I think, ensures we can focus our concentration on the characters and their interaction. I think this is an unusual approach by Maestro Shore to an intimate and revealing scene.Question for Doug: will the book contain information on the composition/design of the choral passages in the score. The chant used with the ring-wraiths was one of the things that got me interested in the FOTR score originally and I'd like to know more about the process of writing the choral sequences in pieces like 'Rivendell' and 'The Wolves of Isengard'. I'd also like to know more about the decisions behind the composition and texture of the choirs.
One passage that stands out for me is the female choir at the start of 'Rivendell'. There is one voice more distinctive than the others which adds an amazing, other-world quality.

Thanks for the update, Doug
I can't wait for your book...Christian, you did well at the end of all things I thought you'd do 'A Storm Is Coming' next (the third 'opening track'...)
Jim, thanks for the videos, they are great!
Greetings from London, where I've attended the LotR-Musical. I like it (the costumes and the lighting were great) - though the story was cut to the bone...
Has anyone else seen it? What do you think about it?

I just gave The Last Mimzy another thorough listen, and tried to figure out why the score lacks the extra zing.In my opinion, it's because the orchestration and also the thematic material is strangely sterile, emotionless and also not very subtle, which is a rarity with Howard Shore. It's certainly not a bad score, but it certainly doesn't give me the extra dose of pleasure either.
However, to say something immensely positive, Doug, haven't you also noticed that after Lord Of The Rings, Howard immensely grew as a composer? I find he did almost a quantum leap; sure, his sensibilities were always magnificent, but regarding orchestration and composition, I find him alot more intricate in his post- LotR phase.

I'm doing it in Photoshop and it's been a little while since I've used it so my skills are really rusty. Hopefully I'll have one up by tomorrow!

http://img201.imageshack.us/my.php?image=returnofkingfinaltj3.jpgWell I got to working on a cover for ROTK:CR a couple of days ago. The sizing is off but I think the image of Aragorn riding forth with his armies behind him would make a rather nice box set cover.
Photoshop is giving my system issues today so the "Incomplete Recordings" cover hopefully will be up tomorrow. We'll see.

I wanted to center the map on Gondor, since it will be in the final product, but I couldn't find a high-res Middle Earth map anywhere.

That's really really cool, vdemona and Neo.Though vdemona, your pic is probably something that could be on the booklet or the inside CD-thingey... what Neo's done is cover material. But you've got those antiquated tones just right, it's so perfect.
And Neo, how did you manage to get the words so clear? I couldn't find a pic with words that clear for the life of me. SO I just went ahead and made that "Incomplete Recordings" pic.

I found the cover on Google Images I think, and then used adjustment layers and masks to exclude all the text... except "The Return of the King", which I added myself after I had erased "The Two Towers".(The font name for the names of the movies is "Albertus MT")

Hey everybody, I just want you to know that I moved the Lord of the Rings Score Analysis Project to a new domain: LOTRscores.comMany thanks to Marilynn/Magpie for the quick reaction - without her, the damage caused by the evil spammers would have been much greater.
And sorry about the slow update: I have just returned from a long vacation in the beautiful land of Cuba (I had actually just arrived there when Marilynn mailed).
Anyway, please go ahead and browse the site - and don't forget to add or change anything if you feel something's missing! I have added a simple anti-spam function, so hopefully the site will at least be safe for the next couple of months.
Here's the URL once again, just so you don't forget it: LOTRscores.com

I am watching ROTK right now, and Gandalf and Pippin just walked out of Denethor's Hall after he yelled at them...and wow, the Minas Tirith (Silver Trumpets) theme. So, so great. Probably my favorite theme from all the scores. Does anyone have a favorite rendition of this theme? Mine might have to be in Lothlorien. Is it used in ROTK outside of the Pippin and Gandalf entry/exit scenes and the sword-forging scene? I'm only a third through the movie and it has been a while...

Okay, so Doug said the final booklet is due at Warners on September 7th. Did he happen to mention last year when the final booklet was due? That could give us some clue toward the release date, a vague clue, but a clue nonetheless...

Well I got a chance to preview HS's Eastern Promises on SoundtrackNet. I think that I can safely say that besides ROTK:CR I'm very much looking forward to purchasing this score. There were so many scores that I thought I wanted that turned out to be disappointments for me this year. The horn motiff in Vory v Zakone reminds me very much of the Rohirrim motifs in The Two Towers, sans Norwegian fiddle.
I have to say that with the exception of Spider, I wasn't a big fan of Shore's Cronenberg collaborations. Eastern Promises is a big exception to that rule.

From theonering.net:Christopher Coleman from tracksounds.com writes: Just thought you'd like to mobilize the LOTR fans to help vote Howard Shore's LOTR scores as the "best of all time." Of course the competition is tough: Star Wars, Braveheart, Lawrence of Arabia, The Magnificent Seven, The Godfather...and many other classic film scores. The voting is happening at www.tracksounds.com

Oh, how dare I forgot that HS was working on this! Yes, [as a Russian] I loved the EP preview, especially the first two opening tracks. Good that violin\cello are used, not termenvox, bad that not all the tracks a too lengthy. By the way, what is this rumour about the bonus track on the itunes?[Message edited by Ge0rge on 08-27-2007]

An interesting find Sid! I had not seen the Theatrical version of the Fellowship (or Journey to the Weathertop) in a long time and I had forgotten about this section. Someone mentioned this difference in the cues a long time ago (it is natural for the 2 versions to differ as the EE is longer) and it was interesting to finally hear how it plays out. I have to say I prefer the EE one for the slightly stronger development of the theme which was afforded by the few second of extra footage.

I've always admired the Bruckner-like orchestration and minimalism in this Fellowship theme statement. However, I'm not quite sure why this is labelled "development of the Fellowship theme", as that theme pretty much stays the same in both versions. The theme that gets a more elaborate workout in the EE version seems to me to be Aragorn's theme.

You are quite right Marian! Although Aragorn's theme is basically derived from the Fellowship's theme so it could be counted as a developent of the Fellowship material
I think the labelling was a little odd as one would expect that there are preceding and follow up videos for these if they are to illustrate the development of the theme. These 2 clips just show the difference of the scoring in the same TE and EE scene.
