Good selection indeed; though I'm a little saddened to find that Ottman's Superman Returns was nominated over Clint Mansell's The Fountain. And a nod ofr Trevor Rabin? Very "cutting edge"!

I don't think anyone ever announced the winner this year...

    ...John Ottman for SUPERMAN RETURNS.

WOW! ALL those nominees are weak, VERY WEAK. And Ottman won!? Powell's is the best of the bunch there, the only strong score in that pile.

Actually, Casino Royale and Perfume are quite good. Both were on my personal Top 10 for 2006 list.

I haven't heard Perfume yet, but Casino Royale, while "good," still suffers from David Arnold just aping John Barry: Arnold has the talent to do good original work, yet continues to just lean on Barry for his Bond scores; I'm bored with the approach and it's completely unnecessary--a Bond score DOES NOT have to pay such "homage" to John Barry in order to sound good; Arnold should be replaced on this series ASAP.

I wouldn't be dismayed to have Arnold off the Bonds either. CASINO ROYALE was ok, but four trips to the well is enough of a turn... there was must be others out there who can do the 'modernised Barry' thing just as well.

And though this comes months too late, the nominees, and winner, go some way towards explaining why sci-fi/fantasy fans come off as a bit too undiscriminating of their own genre some times.

The "modernized Barry" does not need to be done. I was excited when Arnold claimed he was using a new "sound" for Casino Royale, given that there would be a new actor, and while it's probably his best Bond score, so much of it is just Arnold trying his best to sound like Barry, because that's what he thinks he has to do. Regardless, he's wrong, it's the wrong approach, and it's a tired sound. Listen to Bill Conti's For Your Eyes Only, one of my favourite Bond scores, and you'll hear Bill Conti, not Bill Conti trying to sound like John Barry. That's the way you do it and David Arnold has enough original talent to go that route, yet he's too far gone now with his reverence for Barry that I'm sure it's too late to salvage a new approach from him. If Arnold is back again, which I'm sure he will be since he's so safe, than maybe he should try and sound like himself, not John Barry.
