Peter~~~~ does Varese's lame policy of not giving retailers discounts mean Karate Kids going to cost 50 big ones thru the store?Ah well---who cares...still cheaper than sales tax and varese's stuck-in-the-90s UPS shipping.

Author! Author!
By Dave Grusin
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Limited Edition of 2000 copiesAlso includes:
AUTHOR! AUTHOR! – The unused score by Johnny MandelMusic Composed by Dave Grusin
Also includes:
AUTHOR! AUTHOR! – The unused score by Johnny MandelLife is getting complicated for Broadway playwright Ivan Travalian (Al Pacino). His flaky wife Gloria (Tuesday Weld) is moving in with her lover, his director hates his new play and his leading lady (Dyan Cannon) is a terrified movie star who's never been on the stage. With five children to look after (most of them Gloria's), a budding romance with his leading lady, and a producer (Alan King) demanding a rewrite, it's no wonder the emotionally and financially unstable Ivan starts to exhibit all kinds of irrational behavior.
Returning to our CD Club for our latest set of titles is the great Dave Grusin. A legendary pianist, and the composer of the much-loved scores for On Golden Pond, My Bodyguard, Tootsie and The Goonies, Grusin’s absence from the scoring stage has been one of the more lamentable aspects of modern film music.
For this special release we take a look back to an enchanting film and score from 1982. Grusin’s pop-infused score is warm and inviting and features infectious melodies that are always eminently comfortable and easy to love. Dave Grusin suffered along with everyone else during the 1980s, when it came to score album releases, and so we are particularly thrilled to present Author! Author, just in time for a new DVD release of the film, coming in April.
Dave Grusin’s score for Author! Author! was actually a rescore job, and as a very special bonus, we also present the unused original score for the film by none other than Johnny Mandel! Two legendary jazz composers both scoring the same film! Perfect casting for both of them, yet only Grusin’s music has ever been heard. Mandel’s is a darker take on the story - a beautiful work, the very existence of which is a revelation. What a happy surprise, making this an even more exciting release!

The Vanishing
By Jerry GoldsmithLimited Edition of 3000 copies
Music Composed and Conducted by Jerry Goldsmith
In this riveting, tension-filled psychological thriller, a young woman (Sandra Bullock) mysteriously disappears, sending her boyfriend, Jeff (Kiefer Sutherland), on a years-long quest to find her. Not even a new love (Nancy Travis) can keep him from his obsessive search. All the while, the calculating psychopath (Jeff Bridges) who kidnapped his girlfriend stalks Jeff, ultimately taking him through the exact same steps that led to the crime. In order to find out what happened, Jeff must put his own life in the hands of this devious stranger.
Jerry Goldsmith’s 1993 score for Twentieth Century-Fox’s remake of The Vanishing was one of the composer’s very rare ‘90s scores to go without an album release. Goldsmith’s score is both intense and beautiful, while steeped in psychological intrigue. It is stylistically similar to the composer’s brilliant work on Basic Instinct but is as unique as ever for Goldsmith and includes a rare exploration in jazz as the composer wraps up his score with a jazz trio.
A few cues from The Vanishing were premiered on our boxed set Jerry Goldsmith at 20th Century Fox, back in 2004. For this CD, however, the entire 65 minute score was remixed from the original multi-track tapes, presenting a definitive new look at Goldsmith’s overlooked music for this film.

The Karate Kid
By Bill ContiLimited Edition of 2500 copies
Also includes:
THE KARATE KID, Part II
THE KARATE KID, Part III
THE NEXT KARATE KID4 CD Set!
Music Composed and Conducted by Bill Conti
To kick off our CD Club releases for 2007 we offer one of the biggest releases to yet come from our Club. Bill Conti’s score for 1984’s The Karate Kid is another of the quintessential scores from the 80s that everyone remembers. It is also a score that left film music fans of the time absolutely bewildered that such a famous score for such a successful film could go unreleased. Conti’s score is, at turns, charming, beautiful, pensive and powerful. It hits all the right notes and features none other than Zamfir himself on pan flute, representing the mystic side of Pat Morita’s Mr. Miyagi. The Karate Kid was directed by Conti’s long-time friend and frequent collaborator John G. Avildsen. Along with Ralph Macchio, who played karate kid Daniel Larusso in the first three films, The Karate Kid starred the ever-adorable Elizabeth Shue.
Conti returned for The Karate Kid, Part II with an even bigger score, expanding on his original themes and creating new ones. Even though Macchio and director Avildsen left the series after the third film, Conti returned to conclude his work on the franchise in 1994 with The Next Karate Kid, which now starred Hilary Swank as the new marshal arts expert in training.
Conti’s music for the series is absolutely stunning. Unbelievably, not one of the four scores has ever been released before. In the spirit of “in for a penny, in for a pound” we decided to rescue not just Conti’s original classic but to prepare the definitive Karate Kid box set to redress the entire situation. For Conti’s fans, this one is nirvana!
For the first time ever … four premiere releases … Bill Conti’s The Karate Kid, The Karate Kid, Part II, The Karate Kid, Part III and The Next Karate Kid are now available!

One thing I never could understand:
"For added convenience, our European customers may now order online directly from Colosseum Records, Germany."Price of Karate Kid from Varese site - $45
Shipping cost to Malta (EU) - $7
Total = $52 = roughly Lm17 (Malta Liri)Price of Karate Kid from Colosseum site - €56
Shipping cost to Malta (EU) - €7 if the boxset weighs <500g, €9 if it wieghs more. Let's say €8.
Total = €64 = roughly Lm27.50That's a difference of Lm10 (or $30). For what? An earlier arrival date? Less chance of getting lost along the way? I fail to see what's so great about ordering from the German site, when US CDs and DVDs are so cheap nowadays...

I think Vanishing will linger around for a while. Not many Goldsmith CDs with a run of 3000 have sold out, and those that did took years. Plus the old boot release and the 20 minutes from "JG@Fox" will mean that certain Goldsmith fans probably won't leap on this like they would otherwise.I wouldn't even hazard a guess on the Conti.

As I've said many times it's very unlikely Back To The Future will ever get a complete release since MCA holds the rights to the music.
Anyways I've ordered the Karate Kid set for sure. $51.48 (that's with shipping) is a very damn good price for any type of 4-CD set. Considering that most 4-CD set shere in the U.S. can go up to $100 if not more, and even go over $100 when they go OOP.

I dunno why people on the FSM board are bitching about the $44.98 price tag for the Karate Kid set. Which comes to $11.25 per CD and that in my opinion is definitely a good deal.Oh well guess you can't please everyone!

Bitching on FSM. Whatever... the bitching is what makes me dislike being a collector. There are ways to critique. When it comes to arguing about price the manufacturer sets, we've been there and done that. Same old same old... gets tiring. You either want it bad enough or you don't.If there is any "bitching" to do, I'm only disappointed that there aren't any Golden Age releases in this batch. Varese does a good job on those, and I look forward to 'em every time.
I won't waste time with buysoundtrax today. Their, uh, reputation speaks for itself.... although someone pointed out to me the recent EBAY purchases buysoundtrax has been making lately: a sure sign of where the gouging will happen next!

lol. The link given to me was basically their feedback page at ebay. You can link over to the CDs they have been buying from the feedback left by sellers. I can't remember many, but there were things like Land Before Time bought for $50. I guess all that's left on that one is to figure out how to rip off a poor mommy who desperately needs to buy the CD so her 6 year old will finally shut up. How's $90? I got my copy earlier this week and finally had a chance to listen to all four discs last night. I'm not a big Conti fan by any stretch, and listening to these scores again after so many years hasn't changed my mind, but I do think they're among the more enjoyable scores I've heard from him just the same. I can't imagine someone who likes Conti more than me being disappointed by them in the slightest.I really liked the liner notes that came with this though. Conti seems very enthusiastic about his work, and his thoughts on rhythm, harmony, and melody were interesting to read. It actually made me wish I liked his music more than I do.
