Speaking of BSG...According to Amazon, "BSG:3" is slated for Oct 23 launch date. (Gosh Oct is a pricey month for me LOL)
Think they will do a disc for "Razor?"
MV and co...I'm smiling in your direction

Nope. Razor will be on Season 4. There wasn't enough new music to justify a release of its own.MV

I would expect Razor to be on the Season 4 album anyway - it's considered a part of Season 4. Looking forward to Season 3's album, Michael!

YEAH! I'm pretty stoked about this one. I'm extremely curious as to whether Bear will integrate some of his music from the "Pegasus / Resurrection Ship" episodes into his score for Razor. The guitar stuff would be cool to hear differently. The DVD release for Razor sounds extremely exciting, with more footage and action than will be aired on Sci-Fi!

What's tracklisting for the Season 3 album?
Bear McCreary wrote way back on August 3 that he was gonna' post the tracks, but has yet to do so (I'm assuming because of his BUSY schedule with Battlestar, Eureka, and Sarah Connor Chronicles!).

I'm glad he's doing that show 'cause the music that was originally used for the leaked pilot episode was terrible! It was all BAD refurbishes of HGW's music from Déja Vu and the slight nod to Brad Fidel's Terminator theme during the closing scene was poorly done; in short, the show demanded a re-score! I'm sure Bear will not disappoint.

I ran across this... not sure if it's accurate, but it seems pretty legitimate! How exciting! Definitely ordering this album, especially if this is the final rundown on content.quote:

Yeah, Bear McCreary is a composer to watch for! Blake Neely, I would assume, initially scored the pilot and was rejected, because the music sounded like total RC/MV junk straight outta' Déja Vu (a literal carbon copy). The track list for the season 3 album looks solid and looks legit, IMO. There seems to be a bit too much music from Unfinished Business, if you ask me, which was a good episode but was not musically memorable. I'm glad it seems to contain the VERY memorable and noble theme for Kat from The Passage, which is very Hans Zimmer-sounding and unique for Galactica in that it's a brass theme. "Storming New Caprica" should be good: I'm very curious about this music since Bear has written very highly of it, yet so much of it was buried/not included in that astonishing action sequence, so it'll be wicked to hear what exactly was behind that pile-driver of an episode. This is still the album I'm most excited for of the year, followed closely by James Newton Howard's upcoming score to I Am Legend!

This concerns me a little bit. I hope they didn't track the movie with existing material.
Awesome tracklist by the way. I hope it's the real one.

There's so much better coming out this Fall/Winter. The movie looks absolutely tripe (sorry, die hard fan of the novel and Will Smith's track record with adaptation vehicles is pretty terrible) and I'm guessing JNH will deliver a terribly uninspired score like he's been doing outside of his work with Shyamalan. Sorry, count me out.

nuts:Hilarious discussion yesterday! Anyway, I'm excited about this score because it's by James Newton Howard! It doesn't matter that some of what he does isn't the best; I kind of like it, it's a sort of honesty with his work: You can tell when he isn't inspired by the film/director he's working on/with. Blood Diamond wasn't great by any stretch, but it did IMO have a memorable and good main theme and some decent action music. But that was an Edward Zwick film, even Hans Zimmer failed to deliver with Last Samurai, which is dull and uninspired. It's gotta' be the director in that case: Zwick is in the same park as Chris Columbus for his bland/no-vision approach to directing: Their films are LAME. Regardless, whether you're a fan of the book/comic book/graphic novel/whatever of I Am Legend doesn't really matter, lame teaser and all, it should provide JNH a good opportunity to score good.
Back to BSG...

Thanks for the link to Bear's Blog! Jeez, I don't know if I've ever come across a composer so enamored with himself. He even admits to having his music in constant rotation on his own ipod! Looking forward to Sarah Connor Chronicles, though I hear the show is terrible. Hopefully, Mccreary will be given the creative freedom to get away from the drums and droning.posted 09-05-2007 12:13 AM PT (US) sean

I do respect him for trying to go his own way. I wonder if he'll ever write something more traditional sounding for a film or tv show. Not that traditional always means better.

Not that traditional always means better.Well, you have to understand that everything on Galactica has been done deliberately fashioned, from the way the show is edited, directed, the look of the visual effects, cinematography, and of course, the music. Take a few minutes out of your day and read through some of Bear's blog and you'll get more of a sense of where the music is coming from, or just read the liner notes on the CD releases: Ron Moore and David Eick are pretty specific on these points, and even on their DVD commentaries/podcasts. From corresponding with him by email, I have no doubt that writing a full-orchestral score, given the opportunity, is something he'd jump at in an instant and succeed at it (he's obviously more than capable of doing that; that approach alone would not work on BSG and would be totally distracting--some knuckle dragger, I think gkgyver, was really pissy about there rarely being an orchestra on this show): IMO, with Battlestar, Bear has shown he has quite a large musical range, and that's something not a lot of composer's have, either because of their lack of skill (being mainly orchestral) or they just aren't given the opportunity to flex their skills so broadly.

I've read a couple of the blogs and it seems like even Bear is sick of the Taiko drum action approach on BSG. I understand the producers wanting to get as far away from the sound of Star Wars/Star Trek as possible but in my opinion they've taken it so far in the other direction that it's no longer exciting as music, it's almost like white noise. I've heard some nice string writing here and there but what's fun about a sprawling war-in-space show where every action cue sounds exactly the same?posted 09-07-2007 02:20 AM PT (US) Crono/Kyp

That's just a ridiculous comment right there. I'm not going to go into obvious detail as to why that's just stupid of you to write that. Do you even own the albums, or you just trowing this out at us because you've seen a few episodes? I think you're misunderstanding Bear in his blogs: I think it's clear he welcomes the change that Eureka and Sarah Connor Chronicles offer (don't mistaken a change of pace for "thank god I don't have to use those drums anymore"--that's silly), but I don't think he'd agree with you at all the percussion not being effective for the action of Battlestar ... That'd be like saying you don't think an orchestra works for the action of Star Wars or Star Trek; an orchestral-only approach to Galactica WOULD NOT work, it's so clear watching the show, the musical approach it has works great. If it's orchestra you want, you're gonna' hear a HUGE amount of that in the BIG action piece "Storming New Caprica" and beautiful "Kat's Sacrifice," so know where you're coming at this. Actually, looking at most of these tracks, they almost have an orchestra ... ALSO, the action material from Maelstrom is littered with it and many of the emotional cues from Exodus are too.

I asked Bear about possible variations on the Pegasus / Resurrection Ship themes being brought back in for Razor. This is his reply:Hi Sean,
Actually, none of those theme appear in the film. As you will eventually see, it's not really the story of the Pegasus. The Pegasus is the setting for a story that revolves around Admiral Cain and a new character we've never seen before in the show. So, I wrote a new theme for her, and couldn't find a place for any old Pegasus themes. But don't worry, there are some familiar themes that make very obvious appearances.
