Topic: LOTR Package Update

Hi everyone,Sorry for the lack of updates… I’ve been traveling a lot lately. And, in fact, I’m heading out again tonight, so I’ll have to be brief.
Yes, I can confirm the ROTK delay. It is not related to rescheduling, legal issues or anything of that sort. The delay pertains strictly to the creation of the physical product which, because of the additional CD and the double-sided DVD in this set, has become a bit more involved than in the past.
No cause for alarm, though I certainly understand your frustrations.
The Annotated Score is its final edits now… I hope it’ll answer your questions regarding unused material, etc. Oh, and FYI, the sequencing on the album represents the film’s structure at the time Shore scored it (save for Sissel’s piece). So when questions arise regarding “why is scene X before scene Y on this album…” it’s because that’s how the film was originally edited and that’s how it was scored.
Ok, I’m late! Gotta run! Yay, airports!
-Doug
PS – keep those questions coming in to the Podcast, they’ve been outstanding so far! I’d still love to hear from more of you… Magpie, I’m looking at you! We should be up and running around early November.

>>>PPS -- Pop quiz, why am I proud to be >>>post 440?Because 440 + the number of posts from the older threads makes a nice round number?
Because your book is finished at 440 pages?
No idea, really. Have a safe flight, Doug!

The placement of Sissel's piece is the only one that confuses me. Wasn't this written for the scene that is now scored with Liv Tyler's song? Or maybe that was for another Houses Of Healing scene that was cut?

Two sided DVD huh.... Well that helps to ease the idea of an extra week of waiting. Now with the right format, you could fit the entire score on one side and something else on the other. Are there any other tricks up your sleeve Doug?27 days to go (again!!!)

Maybe he likes that show, The 4400. I dunno...440 - 350(ROTK) = 90. 90 minutes of rarities? That's a stretch, I guess...

I altered my 'White Rider' video to include more unused and alternate music.

Does anyone know if the music heard over the appearance of Bilbo's map from The Hobbit is a reference to any dwarven music (maybe compositionally)? Just curious, because it's always nice to make hidden thematic connections like that. There is a motif that can be heard more than once in TTT, but I don't recall reading about it in the liner notes. It's in "Edoras" and begins at 1:18. Is this a a theme?
By the way, does anyone consider the emotional scenes of LOTR to be melodramatic, or are they effective?

Well, it's not the 18th here, but it is somewhere. If I wait till I'm ready to post on my 18th, many of our members will be getting ready for bed on their 18th. So....Happy Birthday, Howard Shore.
I'm not as old as Howard, but old enough to remember the heady days of Saturday Night Live back when it was funny. I had vague memories of the "All Nurse Band" but only vague. And I could never find images on the web (large enough) to refresh my memory. It suddenly dawned on me that, if I could figure out what episode it was, I could rent it from Netflix. And so I did. And, being a magpie, I have to 'collect'.
So, I present, Howard Shore and his All Nurse Band:

(if I remember... next year will be Howard Shore and his All Bee Band)

I doubt that. You forget that double sided DVD-10 is almost 1Gb bigger than DL DVD-9, and this should be enough for the ROTK size.posted 10-17-2007 10:38 PM PT (US) Magpie

By the way, in case anyone doesn't already know, we can once again listen to Return of the King Complete Recordings at www.streamingsoundtracks.com . There's usually a delay of 8 days between repeats, but the station owner was kind enough to reset the timer for us.

Joyeux 61 ans Howard Leslie Shore. Une couronne d'or et d'argent pour vous qui n'avez jamais perdu la tête pour scorer n'importe quoi.Dambedir,Minas Morgul, Romuald.

Me too. And if you join as a VIP (just a few dollars for a month) you can get it in 128 kpbs, which is not bad at all (at least for the computer). I'm really enjoying previewing all the music on that site now. The wait between tracks seem quite long, but I'm finding all sorts of other great music as I wait.By my calculations, I have now heard almost four fifths of the soundtrack - though all out of order, or course. I'm so looking forward to being able to hear everything straight through from beginning to end in just under a month's time. Not to mention reading Doug's liner notes and annotated score, and finally finding out about the last set of themes.
Here's a thought: for those who have listened to some tracks, what is your favourite track so far?
I know it's hard to pick a favourite, but the first that comes to my mind is the first track I heard - The Foot of Orthanc. It has some really great defeated versions of the Isengard theme and the Five Beat Pattern, and it was all so sublimely subtle. I can't wait to hear it again!

I remember that even while watching the EE for the first time I loved both the Orthanc and Mouth of Sauron scenes for their perfect subtle scoring with the Isegard theme and Mordor theme. Both themes are treated in a low key fashion but still threatening and menacing.

Going by the music in the actual film itself on DVD, my favourite part is probably the pivotal Frodo/Sam moment when Frodo falls apart and Sam says, "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!" I think it falls at the end of the Mouth of Sauron track, but I may be mistaken.

Oh to still add to the Mordor/Isengard material I have to say that Shore succeeded in creating excellent themes for evil in these films. They embody the idea of evil and instanly summon up menace and foreboding even when used in subtle underscoring.Isengard theme is oppressive and imperious, unchanging, relentless, music for metal and wheels, Mordor theme embodies the true evil and wickedness in the story, being instantly menacing, twisted, threatening, almost screaming its fury and Evil to the world. Shore manipulates his themes so that both get heavier and heavier from score to score and in the end Mordor theme mirrors the proximity of the Land of Shadow itself and the growing power of Sauron and his armies.
What is also wonderful is the way Shore adds his secondary motifs to these themes. Mordor Skip-Beat, Threat of Mordor, Descending Thirds motif, 5/4 Beat Pattern and Mordor Outline all so naturally join each other and the main villains' themes. They build a web of themes, dense but coherent slipping so easily in and out among all the other material.
This has been in my experience a rare thing that I have not heard in such big scale in any other score. This interrelatedness is a great strength and amoung the things that have kept me admiring this music for all these years.
