Double sided DVD? So it's goodbye to the tasteful and elegantly coordinated disc art. But the important thing is the music, I suppose.Oh, and Happy Birthday to Howard Shore!!

Doug, I just realised something; for TTT, you wrote that the Isengard material is very invasive and tries to take over other material. Could it be that this is the case with RotK and the Mordor themes?
Because there's an amazing amount of low and guttural brass/woodwinds in there.

I just had a look around the major shops, and it seems that the most accurate track listing is likely Amazon.com's updated listing. It has all the accents in seemingly the right places. THE TWO TOWERS
Chapter 7. Journey to the Cross-roads
Suddenly, caught by the level beams, Frodo saw the old king's head: it
was lying rolled away by the roadside. `Look, Sam!' he cried, startled into
speech. `Look! The king has got a crown again!'
The eyes were hollow and the carven beard was broken, but about the
high stern forehead there was a coronal of silver and gold. A trailing plant
with flowers like small white stars had bound itself across the brows as if
in reverence for the fallen king, and in the crevices of his stony hair
yellow stonecrop gleamed.
'They cannot conquer for ever!' said Frodoposted 10-19-2007 09:57 AM PT (US) Incanus

The track I'm actually having the most trouble with is "A Coronet of Silver."It starts with Frodo having a bad feeling, has about two minutes of unused music (which could fit partly into Gandalf and Pippin's talk), goes to Minas Morgul briefly, has MORE unused music (possibly for a shorter cut of Frodo being beckoned towards the tower, replaced with sound effects in the film), more Minas Morgul stuff and then ends with yet more unused music.
I suspect there's going to be a lot of unused music in this set.

A Coronal Of Silver and Gold is indeed a nice one.
The first 1:37 are comprising the scene with the fallen king. Then it goes into an unused section for (seemingly) Gandalf and Pippin because there's a hobbity clarinet solo in there.
Then, at 2:54, the introduction of Minas Morgul plays, but it's not the film version because that one play at 4:02. Like I suggested, these may be two alternates edited together.
The film features silence afterwards, but for Frodo being seduced by the city and the eruption of the signal fire, from 5:00 to 5:45, there's this choral piece and dissonant horns, leading right into the music you hear in the film.
I always hoped there would be unused music for this part on the CR because I thought it felt a little "naked".
The film edit of this cue ends after the orc march, but here, starting at 7:45, we hear another twisted oboe statement of the Sauron theme, segueing into the "Dangerous Passes" motif from FOTR.Brilliant track!

Ironically, I think that unused choral section is the best part of the track.Just like with the other two albums, I'm having trouble getting used to the unedited pieces. Shore constructed the original soundtracks so beautifully that they feel like complete cues, even when they're taken from bits and pieces.

Y'know, I was just revisiting the reviews of the Fellowship and Two Towers sets on Amazon, and I couldn't help but notice how our friend G. Kroener's review for Fellowship is not first in the 'spotlight' section, but *second* to a measurably inferior entry from another reviewer. I just gave G.K.'s review another bump up the totem pole, so to speak.Only about 40 votes needed. *cough cough*

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR POSTS, it has taken me a very long time to catch up, but today I read from page 1 to 13 to my post, and it has taken a long time.....at last I am here!!
One thought that came to my mind when I first read the times to the tracks.....in relation to one of my earlier posts about the lighting of the beacons.....I hope the music piece where Strider runs to tell Theoden about the lighting of the beacons, I hope that isn't the start off point to disc 2, in that I hope it is included on the last track of the first disc.
Doug - 440, doesn't that message come up when there is an error when loading a page!!

Aragorn running to tell Theoden the news of the lighting of the beacons does indeed come at the end of that track, at the end of disc 1.Regarding the disc divisions, the only one I'm not so sure about is between discs 3 and 4. The final sequence of the movie really begins with either The Land of Shadow, The Mouth of Sauron, or at the latest "For Frodo", and I can't imagine ever wanting to stop listening at the end of "For Frodo" and not go on to Mount Doom.

Yes, I suppose Fellowship of the Ring has the same problem indeed. But they may have been limited due to disc space - which is clearly not the case here, when disc 4 is so short.Incidentally, neither of these problems bother me because all my music is on my computer anyway, so I actually listen to all the discs continuously with no pauses - and soon, all three scores with no pauses.

I think Shore was balancing the music equally on the 4 discs (roughly an hour of running time for each disc) and he did the same with the 2 other CRs. There was room in the 2nd disc of FotR to include the Khazad-Dûm track but Shore might have wanted to create 3 almost equal length CDs. That might break up the flow a bit but does not drive me to a distraction. Not that it matters in this day and age when we have computers and mp3 players etc. We can all mould these sets into a play list of our liking. And of course the DVDs have the music in uninterrupted form.Oh and that RotK trakc division is just fine in my opinion if you are going to divide the music on 4 discs. Otherwise the last disc would end up being far too short if the Mt. Doom music was switched to the end of the 3rd disc.

in the movie there is a clear cut when Sam, Frodo and Gollum are in the sammath Naur.Maybe it's being feel like an exaggeration only to lighten the series of the scenes/actions but the CR remain related to the movie as it was done the most part of the time.
top 10 for this timethe eagles
the land of shadow
the foot of orthanc
for frodo
crack of doom
grond : hammer of the underworld
the tomb of the stewards
Osgiliath invaded
the battle of the pelennor field
The passing of theoden.ect. lol
And DOUG..
Another explanation (maybe) of your 440's riddle
4/4 it's the Fellowship reunited : track four of the 4th disc !
symbol of all, gathered for the release of the ROTK-CR.
it's seem there is a miss !!
442 ! 2: the number of the discs for the rarities !

Actually what they should have done is NOT suddenly switch to a 4-disc format... there's only 230 minutes of music it would easily fit onto 3 76-77 minute discs (see my post towards the end of page 6 for a 3disc version track list)

Well, I've now heard most of the tracks at least once, so it's time to do a highlights post. In chronological order:1-04 The Foot of Orthanc 4:45
Wonderful defeated versions of the Isengard themes.1-14 A Coronal of Silver and Gold 8:27
The ferociously violent Minas Morgul music in an even richer setting than the OST's already great track.1-15 The Lighting of the Beacons 9:03
Of course the great music for Pippin's special mission and subsequent beacon-lighting, but also Aragorn's run, rounded off with a militaristic version of the Rohan theme.2-01 Osgiliath Invaded Featuring Ben Del Maestro 8:47
The Minas Tirith theme in battle for the first time. I love the valiant brass of the Minas Tirith theme as it struggles to complete its line against overwhelming forces of orcs. (There's also what sounds like an inverted version of the Threat of Mordor, with the beats going up the scale rather than down.) And it finishes with Gandalf saving the day.2-12 The Siege of Gondor 9:01
Mordor themes are unleashed on Minas Tirith in full force. Once again I love the struggling of the Minas Tirith theme, which this time can't even complete a phrase, often instead leading into Mordor themes. Also the new choral Ringwraith theme... What is this theme anyway? I'm dying to know.2-13 Shelob's Lair 8:53
Scary music! The whole Frodo-in-Shelob's-Lair sequence, which includes various new bits to my ears, ending off with Frodo collapsing and seeing Galadriel.3-04 The Battle of the Pelennor Fields 4:10
The Rohan theme in its full glory. I get the shivers just thinking about it! Similar to the OST version but has some new bits too I think.3-09 Shieldmaiden of Rohan 5:07
One of the pivotal moments of the film and the book, and the music is absolutely stunning. And as a bonus it has the Legolas-single-handedly-kills-a-mumakil music.3-12 The Tower of Cirith Ungol 4:41
Heroic hobbit theme! Sam in his moment of glory3-14 The Land of Shadow 6:30
Mordor - land of exceedingly low bass. All the Mordor themes are executed in the lowest instrumental range, in all their violence and terrible grandeur.3-15 The Mouth of Sauron Featuring Sir James Galway 8:15
Punctuated by lots of new phrases throughout. The final battle begins, accompanied by a constant beat and the defiant Fellowship theme. This track also includes my absolute favourite moment of the whole trilogy, where Frodo finally falls apart and Sam says his line, "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!" for which he gets a full statement of the Into the West theme. The Shire music here is absolutely beautiful.3-16 "For Frodo" Featuring Ben Del Maestro 3:17
The beginning of the end, and the climax of the whole trilogy begins here (or maybe in the previous track), and it's all wonderful chorus, starting with the Fellowship theme. I'm not sure what the theme they move onto is - anyone know? Anyway it ends with "The eagles! The eagles are coming!" and Nature's Reclamation.(Most frantic disc change in history occurs now!)
4-01 Mount Doom Featuring Renée Fleming 4:09
It's all up to Frodo, Sam and Gollum now. Eerie History of the Ring themes greet us at Mount Doom, before Frodo claims the Ring and the booming chorus comes back. I'm not sure how much of this played in the movie, but it all seems familiar to me - and wonderful. I love the last disintegrating rasp of the History of the Ring theme just before Gollum falls in.4-02 The Crack of Doom 4:02
I think this track begins with the destruction of the Ring, and it has more beautiful chorus pieces. The height of the climax of the trilogy. The quiet part at the end when Mount Doom goes sky high and everyone cries for Frodo and Sam is also a definite highlight.4-03 The Eagles Featuring Renée Fleming 2:24
"Here at the end of all things."As you can see, for me the highlights of the Complete Recordings focus on the latter half, and especially on the final sequence.
I've focused mostly on longer tracks, but some of the really short ones are excellent too. Notably 2-14 Merry's Simple Courage,
3-01 Grond - The Hammer of the Underworld (a cool deep bass perversion of the Minas Tirith theme joined with Mordor themes), 3-05 The Pyre of Denethor, 3-07 Dernhelm in Battle (Eowyn and Merry's first heroics), and 3-08 "A Far Green Country" (this bit always makes me cry in the film, and it's no less emotional here). Finally, I have to say I don't really like the Green Dragon track - it just doesn't seem to fit in the rather serious nature of this score. The only other thing that bothers me so far is The Passing of the Grey Company, which has some deliberately clashing themes which are going to take some getting used to.
The last thing is that I didn't mention the "end sequence" of the film, but actually there was definitely some new stuff in there too.

Okay, first of all, the fourth disc doesn't increase the price, so I'm not sure what the argument is.Secondly, this CR is Howard Shore's baby, it's his concept and vision, and these act breaks are conscious decisions by him that are supposed to add to the overall presentation and experience.
Thirdly, the book has the scene with the eagles in the middle, and moves then back to Frodo at Cirith Ungol, so this act break simply mirrors the book in a way.
And finally, to have an "act break" before the finale is hardly something unusual. The movie has this feeling too, that the Black Gate is sort of like a prelude to Mount Doom.
The movie couldn't follow the structure of the book, so they at least created the feeling that the two are separate entities.
I find it works exceptionally well, the grand statement of the History Of The Ring theme marks the end of one act, and at the same time announces the last act, the finale.posted 10-20-2007 09:51 AM PT (US) Gorbag

So far I've only heard some of the samples from Barnes and Noble but my only gripe is The Green Dragon; I've got no problems with the nature of it, but I really think they should have gone with the 'clean' theatrical edition, rather than the EE version with Pippin's lapse. I think that serves a more dramatic purpose, given the nature of the scene, and I'm not sure if it really works in purely musical form. Any of you guys think the same?[Message edited by Gorbag on 10-20-2007]
