He's some new up-and-coming composer. Apparently, he and Sly hit it off very well and Sly literally gave the boot to Brian Tyler after hearing Sean's revisionist take on Goldsmith's original themes.

I can't wait to hear what this young composer has up his sleeve.

Is there a source for this news? Mind you, I'd shed no tears over Tyler's departure...

Well, greetings! Are you able to give us any further information regarding this interesting turn of events? Will an official announcement be forthcoming, so that we can get discussion underway properly? I don't mean to cast aspersions on your veracity, of course, but as this is an extraordinary development being reported by an unverified source, it would be helpful to have some sort of independent confirmation.

In the meantime, why don't you tell us a little about yourself? What is your musical background? Are you the same Sean O'Neill who has written in to the FSM mailbag over the last several years?

Sylvester Stallone recently commented on O'Neill's involvement in an interview with British trades. Here's a sampling of his comments:

"Mr. Tyler just wasn't working for us, you know? He wanted the guitarist Slash (from 90s band Guns 'n Roses) to perform these crazy licks on electric guitar, but I'm a bigger fan of the acoustic guitar. So we sought out Sean O'Neill, who's a student of Gustavo Santaoalla. He's really a good guy, you know? He's not really writing music, in like a traditional, Bill Conti-sense. It sounds like he's heard some of Jerry Goldsmith's themes and he's basically trying to play them from memory on an acoustic guitar. It's great, you know? He's a really good guy and his talent is miles long, you know?"

Lionsgate releases Rambo on January 25, 2008.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm excited! This could turn out to be an amazing thing! Good luck Sean!

PS>Did anyone notice in the trailer that it said "Credits Not Contractual"? At first I thought it was refering to some disease that got passed around the set but then I realized what it actually meant. No one actually signed a contract for this movie! People just wandered onto the set and they were filmed!

This sounds like Brian Tyler was let go without even the slightest knowledge that he wasn't working on the picture anymore! That's insane; I thought that Stallone would be a little more kind than to just drop Tyler and not feed him any information. I feel sorry for him, actually.

I guess all that we can hope for is that Sean O'Neill delivers a fitting score; Sly is syaing he can.

OMG! There's a sexually-active moron on the boards! Castrate! CASTRATE, I say, before it reproduces itself.

    Now back to topic...
Before disclaiming that he is no longer attached to the project, Mr. Tyler should check his sources. I cannot believe that Sly and Sean O'Neill's blogs could post such misleading information if it were false, therefore it must be true. Looking forward to the replacement score.

A source from the film's distributor can neither confirm nor deny this development but does inform me that Stallone had stated previously that he became a huge fan of Gustavo Santaoalla's music during filming and claimed that if anyone can match musical legend Goldsmith's mastery of the challenging craft of film music, it's Santaoalla's mastery of guitar, plus a few violins.

Don't worry guys and gals, I plan on using ALL of Goldsmith's best themes in my replacement score for Rambo. You'll also be excited to know that I've composed a new versatile theme called "King Cobra," which first appears in the snake-fighting sequence; pretty cool. I played it for Sly on my Fender and he said, "Very nice!" Since then I've adapted it using Garage Band on my eMac for a fully orchestral performance.

I really wish that the Academy would consider more action/adventure scores like this come Oscar season, becuase the stuff I've been hearing about this score leads me to believe it's along the lines of Brokeback Mountain and Babel, both of which can be agreed upon as being some of the best scores of the 21st Century.

Sean, wow! What an honor it is to have you posting here! I'm very excited about hearing your new "King Cobra" theme; it sounds really menacing!

Have you ever been to Burma?

I need to inform you guys that Brian Tyler recently sent me an email detailing his departure and the reasons why he got the boot and what he's doing in the future:

    "Dear Andrew,

Hello, this is Brian Tyler. So it seems that the word has gotten out about my departure on Sylvester Stallone's new epic, Rambo. Let it be known that it was unfortunate, but once I heard the talent that Sean O'Neill displayed for Mr. Stallone, I knew that my score wouldn't make the cut. Mr. O'Neill's gifts with the acoustic guitar are near revelatory; it's safe to say that we have a new up-and-comer who'll certainly deliver some of the highest caliber of scores. I'd also like to let you know that I'll be filling in for Ramin Djawadi on Iron Man because he'll be unable to score due to a head cold. I've also finished writing my first cook book with fellow composer Bruce Broughton. The title is "Cooking Composers" and it's being puplished by Double Day and will be released on January 8th of next year. Thanks for your time and have a good holiday season.

BT (Brian Tyler, not that other guy)"

He also sent me a signed copy of his rejected Rambo score. If anyone is interested, send me an e-mail. It's a good score, but I can see why Sly thought there needed to be more acoustic guitar.

Yeah, Andrew, I've been to Burma. It was quite exciting: Sly and I went together; that was a prerequisite to joining the Rambo Team. I also beat Bear McCreary at Guitar Hero 3, and Sly was so impressed by my performance that he signed me almost immediately and sent a VHS tape of the match between Bear and I to BT, in order to display the talent that had been amassed to defeat his wimpy renditions of the classic Goldsmith theme(s). So, he logically bowed out of the project, stating that "The best man has won." BT has been a real sport about it: It's pretty incredible, though, that not only is HE the master behind such acclaimed action scores as War and The Fast And The Furious 3: Tokyo Drift, but he's also the MAN "BT" (his DJ name) behind the amazing action/drama score, Stealth: Which is his unofficial tribute to Remote Control and S.P.E.C.T.R.E boss, Hans Zimmer.

I think Sean should write a 'John theme' and a 'Rambo theme', to reflect the duality in Rambo: part John, part Rambo. These themes should never be heard in the same place until the final moments of the film when Rambo's coffin is found to be surprisingly light - and empty, in fact - to the surprise of his treacherous handlers. As the cold warrior heads out into the woods and the credits roll, Sean should offer a final contrapuntal statement of both themes at the same time.

    Good luck Sean.

That's interesting that you bring that up, Michael, because I've actually developed a new John/Rambo theme separate from the "King Cobra" theme and the Goldsmith renditions and variations, called "Legend Of War": It perfectly summarizes the character that Sly has perfected now over 4 films and brings him clearly into the 21st century; the action segment is written in 1-4-5, so that's a welcome treat, yet the piece begins slowly with a lush guitar rendition of the theme followed by some minor-mode synth lines before I bring in full orchestra--it'll be something to behold, I guarantee it.

Sean, I am curious, what sort of unique instruments will you be using? After seeing the trailer, I wouldn't mind hearing some of Djivan Gasparyan's duduk playing for this score. The dudukyness really adds another element to all the scores it's in. Plus, are there any chances of any ethnic vocal chants? I was listening to Apocalypto and thought "now Sean should use THIS!!!" And I think it'd be ok to copy it, I mean, Horner does it all the time so why wouldn't it be ok for you to do it?

AlexShoreSpain is a crackhead, don't listen to him.

Dinko: Douglas Fake is not involved with Rambo. You are correct.

Clayton: I thought of using the duduk but have since backed away from that idea since the movie is set in a jungle, so being reminded of sand and deserts and terrorism wasn't the feel I was going for. I do have an eclectic assortment of players from Thailand to contribute to the authenticity of the locale, you'll be pleased. There are vocals for the "King Cobra" theme, in fact. The first version that appears on the album is the vocal version and then there's a reprise at the end that will consist of the EXACT same performance of the theme, just without the vocals; sorta' like what John Williams does to fill space on a CD instead of including MORE score.

Sean, I'd be keen to know the extent of the RZA's involvement. Is he contributing themes alongside you?

Of particular note, AlexShoreSpain must not have read the entire thread; especially when I included exact words from Sylvester Stallone, Brian Tyler, and Sean O'Neill. Just goes to show you.
