On the 10th (Saturday) Doug said he would finish the podcasting "this weekend" meaning this past weekend. It should be ready very soon, before the weekend. If not, I'm gonna kill him! A "preview" shouldn't come out with or after the release. Kinda pointless...

@ MagpieDo you remember the days when the word spread quickly that the Battle For Middle-Earth II video game had ROTK music that was easy to extract, and some of us, including myself, did some edits?
Well, today I was surfing aimlessly through *insert filesharing machine*, and stumbled over my Return Of The King edit that I did back then.
Apparently someone downloaded it from my hard drive and spread it.I'm not exactly proud of it, but it's kind of cool that your own laborous work is a source for other people's joy

Wow, Horner announces that Howard Shore is conducting the live score to the entire Fellowship movie and there's no ripple on this board?! This is awesome news!I'm going to gamble and wait it out and save my plane ticket for Return of the King and, if we're really lucky, the entire trilogy over a three night engagement (oh please oh please oh please), no matter where in the world it is. If I have to choose and I'm going to spend a year's savings on a trip to see a performance, I'd rather listen to ROTK then the other parts.
Where'd you get this info Horner? I'm so happy Shore is up for this monumental task. It can't be easy to keep the right tempo and the orchestra on cue through an entire 3.5 hour film, even if you wrote and performed the music before. I wonder if they're playing cut cues, like the passage when Frodo is stabbed. It better be the Extended cut too, I hope. Any info or input, Doug?
Oh, I reread the post, I guess Howard Shore is present at the performance but not conducting it personally. That's kind of strange.

WHAT?!?*scrambles back to read Horner's post again to find out how on earth I missed that*
Edit: Yes, Shore is not conducting, and details in that post are quite scant anyhow.

Well, unfortunately, it won't be the SEE-Cut of the "Fellowship" movie. Mostly because of the orchestra. It will have to play for almoste three hours and this is very exhausting.Yes, You've read right. Howard Shore will not conduct the orchestra. He was very pleased with Ludwig Wicki doing the conducting back in March during the "Music of Howard Shore"-Concert but he definitly will be attending the concert. Evtl. there will again be a Q&A about his score for "Fellowship". I'm very much hoping for such a Q&A.
Where do I got this infos from? I'm involved in this projects and concerts with the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra. I'm resposible for the press work and stuff like this.
Cheers

I'm not from Switzerland, but I'll be there nontheless!!
I just *love* the 21st CSO and Lucerne - and the LotR-Score of course
@CrippledAvenger: I would have prefered RotK too, but I also love the Shire/Black Rider/Moria/Amon Hen-music (and other parts that I forgot to mention), so FotR is alright
I'd love to hear Two Towers as well: The Rohan-Theme, Théoden Rides Forth, The Last March of the Ents, Helm's Deep,... *drool*
Wait a minute... I'll get that!
On November 25th at Stockholm. 11 days to go-Sabsi, feeling like Gollum after he finally got his precious back (before he was devoured by the lava...)
PS: @Ruckus: LOL, you got me - for a few seconds I really believed you had access to the unpublished draft of the AS, but the 'aleatoric vocals by Renee Fleming, the London Voices, and a Maori rugby team choir' were too much
The AS is great, btw (never had any doubts about that).[Message edited by Sabsi on 11-14-2007]

If one feels satisfied, why break in with a new thought? But, it's a small thing. If I truly dislike it I can hit stop.
Since it seems I have to wait until 2008 to get my precious, I could not resist, listened to Erik's TROTK:CR-special on his radio show and had to remember Magpie's posting afterwards...
Actually I think the way it's done works brilliantly - to me DAYS OF THE RING is so unbearable beautiful that I was really glad there was something afterwards to calm or chill down and reminisce about this whole unique listening experience. Simply ingenious - my two cents...

So given its mention in the AS does anyone think we might get the Theatrical version of Aragorn and the Dead's arrival at the Pelennor Fields on the Rarities disc?

So, any surprising thematic connections in the Annotated Score that you haven't noticed before?I gave a few examples, it's your turn
I think Doug forgot to mention the "All Shall Come To Darkness" theme in "The Fellowship Reunited".
It foreshadowed the death of Boromir, the death of Theoden, and now it foreshadows the passing of Frodo in Bag End.posted 11-14-2007 11:02 AM PT (US) Crippled Avenger

Thanks for the announcement Horner, that's great! So, this tells us quite explicitly that the written score has been compiled into a performance-ready state. I remember Doug mentioning some time back that compiling the written score into a chronological and full form was a project as vast as the CR. This bodes well for a future release of the written score.
Horner, even though it's the theatrical cut, do you know if cut passages will be reincorporated (again, the example of Frodo being stabbed on Weathertop)? Also, I doubt the full orchestra and choir numbers from the recordings will fit in the pit, so do you know if some passages have been reorchestrated to allow for a smaller number of performers? I'm really jealous of those who can afford to get to this.

Anyway, BN informed me yesterday that my shipment has been unexpectedly delayed. Grrr.

Why does it seem I have the CR already? It's not like "All Shall Come To Darkness" isn't perfectly audible in the movie.
One can discuss the music based on what you hear in the movie, you know

Me wants a shipping notice, tooSpeaking of noticing: as Theoden speaks to Grima "You were once a man of Rohan", you can hear the musical pattern of "fall from grace and subsequent redemption".

The more I think about the more baffled I am that there seems to be no musical signature for Denethor.Any thoughts?

*brood* Is there a musical signature for Théoden (not counting the Éowyn&Théoden-Theme)?
Or for Boromir? Or Legolas? (I hope the Mirkwood-Elves will get their own theme in 'The Hobbit' )[Message edited by Sabsi on 11-14-2007]

Well, there's a theme for Theoden and Eowyn, so why not for Denethor and Faramir? Faramir also has his own musical trademark.
Denethor is an important protagonist (or antagonist) and is behind quite a few decisions the characters make.

Just listened to it. Great stuff, thanks you so much for that Doug. I'm glad you didn't play too much music from the CR. I can't believe that little bit (time-wise not sounding-wise) from the destruction of the ring theme in "The Crack of Doom" was cut from the OST. That's probably the part I've been waiting for the most; absolutely amazing stuff, can't wait to hear the whole piece in a couple days, (ahem Peter send them out now please ahem! )Definetely loved the alternate Argonoth scene from Fellowship as well. An obviously perfect theme for that scene. I'm guessing that will be on the rarities, can't wait for that. I think its very fitting to include that with your book, which I'm sure will be a very interesting read.
Thanks again Doug and to all the members who asked questions.

A wonderful podcast Doug! Thank you for it and for your work on the CRs which would not be the same without you!
And thanks to all the members here that asked those very relevant and interesting questions! That alternate Argonath music (I loved the Gondor theme there although the film makers went for a more foreboding of the History of the Ring with that in the end) was a mouth watering hint of what wonders the Rarities will hold. And I hope to see you here during next year as well Doug keeping us informed and anticipating for the book!
Oh and my RotK CR shipped yesterday!!! It should be here for the 20th at the latest!

Hey guys, I'm back, and in time it seems. Finally, an official release of ROTK music to satify my earsThanks so much Doug for a great podcast (and for letting me hear me)
And WOW... I never dreamed that the Argonath featured that bit of music. Guess it again goes to prove how Shore conceived his ideas for musical ROTK even at the time of FOTR. Simply amazing.
5 stars to Shore and 5 stars to Doug. Nay, make that 7 stars each... you guys are Kings!!

@ Crippled AvengerI'm sorry. At the moment I'm not able to give you any more fixed informations on this "Live-Soundtrack"-Concert. I think, the Score will be conducted an played exactly the way you can hear it in the Cinema-Version. If there is more information coming along, you can be sure that I'm going to post it here first! ;-)

Hi everyone,Glad the Podcast seems to be hitting the spot. My deepest apologies to those whose recorded questions I wasn’t able to include. It’s really hard to pace these things. I did, however, try to address the questions without using the recordings.
Magpie, if you listen very, very closely, I think you’ll find that I actually addressed your question, nonverbally. Dig deep, folks… the Argonath music is not the only hidden gem here!
ROTK should hit shelves in just a week now. International orders should arrive without too much delay… I hope… but, don’t ask me specifics, because I really don’t know… Anyway, after a year of teasing, taunting and dropping hints, I hope you’ll find the destination to be worthy of the journey.
And remember, we ain’t done yet!
…And Horner, if you find a way to convince your Press Department that they need to fly me out for a Q&A session, consider me there!
Talk soon everyone,
-Doug
