Oscar-nominated composer James Newton Howard has recently scored his sixth film for director M. Night Shyamalan, at the Sony Scoring Stage in Culver City, CA. The thriller The Happening features cello solos by Maya Beiser and a 90-piece orchestra. ScoringSessions.com is excited to bring our readers some exclusive photos from the orchestral sessions!

Yeah, I'll almost certainly be getting this score. I buy ALL the Shyamalan Howard scores.

Yeah JNH tends to write excellent music for Shyamalan's films!

I don't think there's been a score to a M Night Shyamalan movie I haven't liked. So I am deffinately looking forward to this one! Plus there's not a signle Shyamalan movie I've disliked either, so that doesn't hurt it to much for me.

I don't generally look forward to JNH's recent scores, except for his work on M. Night's movies. They have that extra spark of care and creativity, like he really seems to get into the story.

On a directly related note, I very much hope that the film will be better than Lady in the Water. I thought that was a gem of a score for a mess of a movie.

Kind of describes the rest of their collaborations too. Or not. I don't know. But I never found a single one of those films to be evenly mildly interesting, suspenseful or entertaining. As opposed to the scores, which tend to be leagues ahead of the average musical composition.

I have enjoyed all of M. Night Shymalan's movies - some are better than others, but I cannot say that anyone of them is bad. I had only one problem with Lady in the water, the fact that all characters believed in the supernatural aspect of it without question. Other than that, it's a nice movie.

James Newton Howard's scores are perfect for the movies, and excellent as stand alone listening experience – The Village being my favorite.

That said, I'm very much looking forward to their next collaboration. The trailer for "The Happening" looks promising…

    M. Night is a talented storyteller, although I don't think his stories are necessarily that good. Lady In The Water was a mess as a story, but the skill with which he told it had me hooked the whole way through. Though it helped that JNH lent it a lot of emotion.

I agree 100%. I think for Lady In The Water we're supposed to just accept that it's a fantasy where everyone wants to believe in there being something more. If that makes sense.

I thought 6th Sense, The Village, and especially Unbreakable were amongst the finest films of the past 10 years. Signs was excellently crafted, but I found the end disappointing.

The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable remain classics, IMHO. The rest? They earn the coveted "Seriously?" award in my book; as well as the direction that the thumb is facing right up there on top of this post.

Needless to say, I have low expectations for The Happening and I don't plan on seeing it in cinemas . . . despite its inclusion of Miss Zooey Deschanel. I'll be buying JNH's score, since I can only tolerate his scores for Shyamalan's films anyway.

The fact that aliens were responsible for crop circles in the movie was some what disappointing, because it was an obvious assumption. For me at least... I hoped that Shymalan would conceive something original... Nevertheless, the movie was one of the scariest films in years... My house is across the road of a corn field, and after this movie, I could never look at it the same way again...

I agree. Apart from 6TH SENSE and UNBREAKABLE the other MNS films were a mess. The endings always sucked. I did however enjoy each single JNH score.

I'm excited. Should be a good score. I'll wait to see the film before I comment at all on it: The recent ripping into teasers for the likes of Indiana Jones and Star Trek have been tiring, so for this film I hope to be impressed regardless of the trailer.

Andrew, do you even own Snow Falling On Cedars or Waterworld? Those are excellent scores by James Newton Howard (for non-M. Night Shyamalan films), with the former being his best score to date.

James Newton Howard's scores are among my favorites, but he tends to only write good music for Shyamalan's films. I don't really look forward to or care for his other scores, but when he writes for Shyamalan, he's often fantastic!

Newton Howard's score for King Kong was pretty good (you have to consider the ridiculously short amount of time given to him) and there are moments in his Dinosaur score.

Yeah, here's a quote from you: "My favourite score by JAY-EN-AECH is his bestest work of composing for the movies in Da Prince Of Tides... End transmission." At which point you threw your cell phone across the room.
