Mikael offers the best film scoring assignment news I've heard since David Shire went on board ZODIAC.

Great news, Michael, and let's hope he makes more of it than David Shire had a chance to on Zodiac.

AH! Not one, but TWO "make-my-week" announcements in the space of 3 days. Amazing!

HAHA! Well, Zodiac is nice, but I can't say I've played it more than twice. Regardless, Goldenthal will hit it out of the park in a big way (dare I write that destiny calls, Michael? HA!); he's not hired to be subtle.

Oh, thank Heavens!Everyone who knows me on some level knows this is possibly the best news ever.
New Mann (Prohibition-era gangsters never looked so good in HD!) and new Goldenthal! WHOO!

Given Mann is using Spinotti as DP, I reckon he's back on film for this one. (Hence fulfilling his promise to Emmanuel Lubezki after MIAMI VICE: 'If it hasn't got sprockets, I'm not shooting it!' )I'm hoping Goldenthal was chosen for this jazz-era tale because of what he can do with saxophones given the opportunity.

Ah yes, the crazy Goldenthal-sax-boogie. Ever so prevalent on Drugstore Cowboy and used to some pretty chilling effect on In Dreams. Mike, have you heard The Green Bird yet?Sean, I listen to Zodiac quite frequently. So I win. Hah!

Where did you get this information?

Cinema is my drug.
On the question of where I found out what Mann said to Lubezki, at a point at the height of his popularity (THE NEW WORLD followed by CHILDREN OF MEN), Lubezki did a lengthy interview with Jeffrey Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere blog. It was an audio interview, and in there was a section where he talked about working with Mann on ALI, and how after MIAMI VICE he felt he'd made a monster by introducing hi-def into ALI. He said Mann had admitted to feeling the strain of pushing the new technology as well, and had made the remark I quoted above.

I am superexcited about this. I love the Cagney/Robinson/Bogart gangster flicks and I was just telling a co-worker how they should do a 1930's Prohibition tale in the vein of ROARING TWENTIES or NIGHTWORLD, but avoiding the brat pack MOBSTER schlock. There's no better director in my opinion to take on this task than the director who gave us HEAT and COLLATERAL, two films I greatly admire. Mann is an awesome director and he will treat the material with the seriousness it requires. Not so excited about the cast, yet. Depp and Bale, while good actors, are not who I picture for a Prohibition epic. I also hate that they are playing actual real gangsters. I love the Warner Bros. gangster flicks of the 30s where they invented their characters like Rocky Sullivan, Eddie Bartlett, Tom Powers, Rico "Little Caesar", etc.Should be a good ride though. Can't wait. I wish Mann would put DeNiro and Pacino back together in a film HE directed. (I know that a movie is coming out this year teaming both actors again, but it is not directed by Mann)
I wonder if we'll get another epic street shootout scene in PUBLIC ENEMIES (with tommyguns, hopefully) ala Eno's FORCE MARKER/L.A. shootout in HEAT.
