I particularly love how Shyamalan handles the kiss on the porch between the two leads.

That's the thing for The Village for me. There are some genuine, wonderful moments. From Bryce Dallas Howard's and Adrian Brody's performances, to the subtle nuances between Weaver's and Hurt's characters (which implies a greater relationship than we're lead to believe, which I love), and, of course, JNH's score works aces in the film, perhaps better than any of the others do (aside from Signs). But all of those wonderful LITTLE moments can't make up for the BIGGER moments that really irk me. The character development is truly poor, and only the actors carry their characters anywhere (and let's face it, this was his best cast). The direction of the suspense and action is just non-chalant nothingness. Roger Deakins' cinematography is impressive, but he's done much better. And I find that the final act is the absolute pinnacle of all things anti-climactic.And, for the record, I liked Shyamalan's use of dialogue in The Village, but I didn't feel as though he understood the language one bit.

Great points about The Village; I agree with all of them. The good parts about the movie are truly the very little moments (Ivy's lullaby, for instance).About the suspense, however...I do enjoy how Shyamalan focuses the camera on Bryce Dallas Howard's hand for a long while as she stands at the door. The first time I saw the film, the effect really worked; however, the twists ruin any suspsense with further viewings.
