    EATH RACE
    Music by Paul Haslinger
    INTRADA MAF 7104

The world’s hunger for extreme sports and reality competitions has grown into reality TV bloodlust. Now, the most extreme racing competition has emerged and its contestants are murderous prisoners. Tricked-out cars, caged thugs and smoking-hot navigators combine to create a juggernaut series with bigger ratings than the Super Bowl. The rules of the Death Race are simple: Win five events, and you’re set free. Lose and you’re road kill splashed across the Internet. International action star Jason Statham leads the action-thriller’s cast as three-time speedway champion Jensen Ames, an ex-con framed for a gruesome murder. Forced to don the mask of the mythical driver Frankenstein, a Death Race crowd favorite who seems impossible to kill, Ames is given an easy choice by Terminal Island’s ruthless Warden Hennessey (Joan Allen): Suit up and drive or never see his little girl again.

Director Paul W.S. Anderson had a singular vision for Death Race, wanting a tough, gritty look for his film. Composer Paul Haslinger's challenge was to come up with something just as uncompromisingly hardcore musically -- a score that would "reek of dirt and sweat, rust and blood" as Anderson put it. Haslinger responded with a rough, hard-edged inventive score -- exactly as the director ordered. It sounds like no other score this summer. Intrada will release the CD to Death Race on August 19. Warning: Put your helmet on before listening to this album.

Death Race from Universal Studios opens August 22. Visit the Death Race site at http://www.deathracemovie.net/

I think I've enjoyed a couple of his scores (they must've really left an impression on me... But I think I liked Girl Next Door quite a bit)... but this movie... I want to vommit every time a preview for it comes on.

I really dug his main theme for Vacancy. I'll check out the samples, but I'm not expecting much.

But it's directed by P.T. Anderson! He's incredible, I'll go see anything he does, especially after There Will Be Blood.

That's true Sean . . . but I don't like him working outside of his usual group of actors. I mean, Joan Allen AND Ian McShane! He could've done better than those two. Well, at least he has Tyrese. He's a great actor and I think I smell an Oscar coming his way after this one.

Why would Intrada release this, of all things?

I'm pretty sure that this is the Resident Evil Paul Anderson (W.S.).

I certainly wasn't expecting this from Intrada. Not so much a release of this score, but a release of a score from an impending film.

Despite how the film looks to people, there's an aspect I'm focusing on that's actually pretty positive. Intrada gets to release a soundtrack for a major movie release, and this is a film I would see relegated to Varese Sarabande. That wouldn't have been so bad either, but as Intrada hasn't done as many films like these, and considering their stock with Universal has gone up so high with the Amazing Stories and Alien (through Universal's special markets label), among others, it seems Universal could be looking to Intrada for more releases like these.

Here's a prediction I don't think will truly happen, but what if the film studios strated going to the specialty labels for soundtrack releases exclusively instead of their proprietary labels?

While that would be interesting, it would never happen- Warner Bros. can keep more money in house for The Dark Knight by releasing it on their music label- besides, they have their own in-house music publishing units.

however, on certain occasions where interest would be high, but the soundtrack ancillary market might be shaky ground, a limited run at the time of the film's release through a retailer like Intrada might make sense.

The only question now is if there will be a digital download release as well. I know a lot of people here won't like that, even if they buy this soundtrack, but it would insane for a film company not to at least entertain the possibility of any additional revenue stream.
