I'm not to sure if I should like this news. Desplat has quite disappointed with his score for THE GOLDEN COMPASS. Elfman or Portman would've been great choices for this movie.

My vote for silliest post of the year.

HUH?! I actually really enjoyed Golden Compass. I could see Elfman doing this picture, but I think that'd be too predictable. This way it's something new.

    ATTENTION EVERYONE!

The music in the trailer is Camille Saint-Saëns' Le Carnaval des Animaux, the movement titled "The Swan".

Clayton, Danny Elfman should not score this film, so let Ryan stop influencing you.

I've glad Desplat got this gig; my hope was for another Shire score (and can you imagine what his score would sound like?) but I think the best guy has been chosen.

Whoa whoa whoa, I said I could SEE Elfman doing it, I never said I WANT him doing it. I'd much rather have Desplat do it.

Actually, it's the movement titled "Aquarium", and it's a new choral arrangement of it.

    Crap . . . I knew that. I really did. I don't know why I typed, "The Swan".

Thanks for saving my ass Dan.

Every time I hear that piece of music I think of the Beauty & the Beast prologue... I'm quite sure they temped that with this. Great stuff.

Anyone want to hear some clips? I personally cannot wait for this film now!!! The music used in the recent full trailer is actualy Desplat's score and it sounds like a great one.

Wow, am I impressed with this score! If this doesn't win the Golden Globe, then some people are clearly out of their minds.

    Highlights:

    1. Postcards
    4. A New Life
    15. Daisy's Ballet Career
    16. The Accident

Every single track, however, is so full of magic and mystery. This is one of the few recent scores I can actually listen to all the way through.

I am getting the CD in a few minutes and then tonight I am going to catch the last show of it. Unfortunately, the last show is at 8 which means there's probably going to be lots of people. I like going to the theatre better when there's fewer people.

I heard an interview with Desplat today on the Day To Day NPR program. It had him on the piano explaining how he came up with the main theme and love theme for the film. He said he got the inspiration for the main theme from the opening with the clock running backwards and crafted the theme in a simple manner so that it could be performed both forward and backward. He then demonstrated it on the piano. Clever fellow, that Desplat. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

There's a great interview over at MusicFromTheMovies too.

'Meeting Again' is one of the my favourite images+score sequences of the year.

So has anyone actually figured out what and where the different themes are on the soundtrack? I can definitely recognize and musically distinguish the themes, but I'm still unaware of what each represents.

    Any ideas?

Some random thoughts on what the themes are for StarlessWinter. Spoilers follow, you were warned...

Desplat refers to a theme for Button's love affair with Tilda Swinton's character, and that is heard in 'Love in Mourmansk' and 'It was nice to have met you' (one of Tilda's lines in the film). Exactly what he regards as the love theme in there is tricky to pin down, as sometimes Desplat's themes seem to include more than once melodic idea.

For the Benjamin Button theme, I assume that is the melody heard at the start of 'Postcards' and again in 'Mr Gateau'. These cues are almost at opposite ends of the film. 'Postcards' accompanies a scene where Button's postcards tell the story of his journeying around the world, and Desplat said in an interview (from what I can gather) that he tried to link these scenes with melody for Benjamin. The melody feels like it is always on the verge of being stated in 'Growing Younger', but it falls apart, possibly intended to mirror Benjamin's mental decline. See also the final deconstruction of the theme in the closing minute of 'Dying Away'.

There's a theme in 'Sunrise at Lake Pontchartrain' that appears more than once in the film, and was apparently intended to link Benjamin's last moments with his father, his father's fateful decision at the start of the film, and his own nervous anticipation of becoming a father. This is the Mr Button theme. I can't remember specifically what part of the cue it comes from.

I'd say Daisy's theme is the theme that dominates 'Meeting Daisy' and the first half of 'Children's Games', and begins 'Benjamin and Daisy'. It makes a brief cameo in 'A New Life' as Benjamin sends letters to Daisy from his ship. Here again - what does Desplat count as a theme? There's a B-theme that starts about a minute into 'Benjamin and daisy' that is just gorgeous, and maybe this is the love theme. That B-melody only appears only a couple of times in the film, including in the viola at the opening of 'A New Life' as Benjamin leaves home to go to sea. It's most haunted appearance is in 'Dying Away'.

What does the theme stand for that appears in the second half of 'Children's Games'? And which recurs in 'Nothing Lasts', 'Meeting Again', and 'Some things you never forget'? Not sure to be honest. This could be the love theme. There's a sense of loneliness about it in a lot of its appearances.

It's not just about melodic separation of the various story strands though, as there's also distinctive orchestrational choices for each section. (The liner notes of the cd go into this more.)
