Although I was severely disappointed in the film, mainly because it destroyed everything that CASINO ROYALE rebuilt for an updated fresher James Bond, I thought a few passages worked well musically in the film. My favorite part was where MI6 is trying to apprehend Bond in the hotel. This is the OIL FIELDS track on the score. I thought this worked really well. I also thought the tinklings of Vesper's theme came in nicely during the movie, as well.I still have a hard time accepting Jack White's song as the newest foray in Bond Theme songs. It's growing on me. I think is a great "publicity" song to advertise the film, but not a title credits song like YOU KNOW MY NAME. Maybe end credits. Don't get me wrong, I love Jack White's music. I'm just not so sure that he's Bond material. There has to be a certain king of sound.
Plus, they need to stay away from "the culturally popular" choices for this new Bond world. I think that is one thing that killed any interest in James Bond for me prior to the new CASINO ROYALE. When you have castings like Denise Richards/ Halle Berry and music by Madonna or Sheryl Crow, the franchise becomes just another package on the shallow pop shelf. All that kind of Bond needs is a wise-cracking sidekick along for the ride to make the campiness complete.
Personally, I think the band BITTER:SWEET or even Tricky (from Massive Attack) could come up with some great Bond songs. I'm glad the Amy Winehouse thing failed for this one. Gimmee a break, who's next, Katy Perry? Get an artist that embodies the sexy broodiness of Craig's Bond.
Also, as a side note, we need better Bond villians. This one was a lame duck. I kept thinking how cool would it have been to transplant Tim Roth's villian from THE INCREDIBLE HULK into this Bond movie. Now that's a baddie (minus the turning into a monster thing) that could tackle with Bond in a free-running standoff.

having just gotten back from seeing the film, I have to disagree with almost everyone. It was a great movie.Like has been said other places, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace make up one film.
Arnold did a passable job on the score, but nothing really stood out. Perhaps with another viewing or two.
As to the title song (if one could call it that), I think it sucked. I actually like Madonna's song for DAD better! I think that - and Brian has disagreed with me on this before - but Amy Lee has a wonderful voice and could do a great job with a Bond title song.
One of the things I've heard from people is that they "miss the humor" of the old Bond films. Well, obviously they haven't read Fleming's books. Bond is a bastard; an efficient killing machine. Emotion has no place in his world. There was humor in QoS, but it was subtle, even more than the homage to a few previous Bond films.
Having said all this, I do admit that there were things in the new film (or actually not in the film) that bothered me.

"Another Way To Die": Terrible song that is pretty rudimentary, musically-speaking, in trying to evoke a faux-Bond feel to it. The lyrics are, well, whatever... I'm interested to hear what David Arnold and Amy Winehouse would have delivered.David Arnold: Passable score. A few nice cues. The lack of a strong main theme makes this score a tough one to come back to. Casino Royale had a great main theme and opening song with "You Know My Name." It all seems lost in this score; I believe it's hinted at once. Also, no big action set-pieces for Arnold to sink his teeth into: I'm thinking about how good "Miami International" was in Casino Royale. Regardless, I'd like to hear someone else take a crack at scoring Bond at the moment: Arnold's continual heavy reliance on using John Barry's sound doesn't work for me anymore; it was refreshing on Tomorrow Never Dies after Eric Serra screwed up big time with GoldenEye, but since then it was only reinvigorated once for Casino Royale... Time for someone else to have a chance: John Powell can do it! He's British, too.
