I actually don't know why I even bother to post the Oscar nominations. The past few years have been a joke anyway. Here they are:

    Best score:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Alexandre Desplat)
    Defiance (James Newton Howard)
    Milk (Danny Elfman)
    Slumdog Millionaire (A.R. Rahman)
    WALL-E (Thomas Newman)

    Best song:
    WALL-E - "Down to Earth"
    Slumdog Millionaire - "Jai Ho"
    Slumdog Millionaire - "O Saya"

I haven't heard the scores to Milk or Slumdog Millionaire, but Button, Wall-E and Defiance are decent, but nothing more than average to me. I guess Thomas Newman just had to get a nomination. As for Milk, Button and Slumdog, they got a nomination because they're nominated on a lot of other categories as well.

I think Benjamin Button and Wall-E are far better than average. Still haven't heard Milk.

DEFIANCE actually grows on you once you see the film despite its similarity to SCHINDLER'S LIST. SLUMDOG actually has some effective music, as well. DARK KNIGHT and INCREDIBLE HULK could've replaced MILK for sure and maybe even WALL-E, IMHO.

Haven't seen the movie. Haven't heard the score. But Slumdog Millionaire will probably win. You know how it goes.

Yes, with the Academy's fixation on unremarkable, reasonably tuneless "world music" scores.

Happy to see Elfman and Desplat - both of those scores represent their best work in quite a while.

Boring nominations. These awards are constantly and consistently a joke; it all just seems like block-voting for each category.

Swap FROST/NIXON for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, and that's pretty much what I was guessing a week or so ago.

SLUMDOG is now the preemptive front runner, just because of the Golden Globes, and the Academy's ignorance about the way original score is actually different from needle dropped songs, especially in a film like SLUMDOG where music is rather effective and prominent. But... the score? Not so much.

Look for a BABEL re-tread. Otherwise, I'd guess BENJAMIN BUTTON has a good shot at it.

Thomas Newman also now has a good shot at getting his Oscar. And like cousin Randy, it won't be for a score.

That's if anyone even votes for the Wall-E song.

Thank you! I agree 10000%. I've sampled Slumdog's "score" and do not understand how/why it's nominated.

I'd choose Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Also, where is the song from The Wrestler?

And! Why isn't Gran Torino being nominated for anything? I haven't seen the film but tons of people have been talking it up (along with Revolutionary Road).

Is SLUMDOG really 'tuneless'? I would have thought melodic catchiness was one of the things a Rahman score would have going for it. (I haven't heard it.)

Gee, I hope Thomas Newman doesn't win an Oscar for that song. (The song REALLY isn't my cup of tea.)

While I thought the film Slumdog had some merit it would have been a lot better if they had turned the volume down!
