You're right Clay...regardless of the music quality the mix and edit of the 3rd trailer was excellent. The music complimented the image and emotional goal perfectly. At the end of the day that should be the goal for not only trailer music, but film music also.

I'm glad there's some enthusiasm surrounding the new film. I for one can't wait. Kevin's just being crotchety and longs for times-gone-by. It's okay. I've got plenty of friends who are older than me who measure every Trek since TOS against it. Whatever... if that's what made an impression on you then, awesome. I can say that discovering TOS for me was more of a retrospective activity; I didn't really get into TOS until after I'd been hooked by the first four films as a child... and then came TNG, which would most likely appeal to more to kids in the 80's than TOS from the late 60's - in the 80's (the Transformers / G.I. Joe / TMNT / Thundercats / He-man club generally gravitates towards "ooooh, new, shiny!"). I'm not invalidating TOS - it's an amazing, groundbreaking show for its time, and I'm in line Day One for Season One on Blu-ray, just like I was suckered into getting it on HD-DVD... and that was a triple dip for me at that point, considering I already own it on standard def, and prior to that bought individual episodes on DVD and VHS. Ugh my stomach just did a cartwheel. Sean's probably more like me in that despite our hangups with a lot of what Berman / Braga did, we still managed to enjoy it. I'm one of the only people I know that actually had a good, memorable time with Voyager. DS9 is on a pedestal thanks to Ira Steven Behr -- that was a wonderful, considerably darker take on Trek. Enterprise was just finding itself when it was sent to the chopping block... sad... and I liked Scott Bakula and Jolene Blalock. The TNG films never quite worked out. First Contact was the only real success. The Undiscovered Country was no Wrath of Khan, but it was a good send-off... well, that it until the not-so-good send-off that Generations turned out to be. Poor Shat and his bridge. It. was... f-Fun.Regardless, I too was skeptical about Abrams taking the reins of my beloved Star Trek. But, I can't help but be excited. Hell, I knew deep down in my gut that Insurrection and Nemesis were going to be stinkers, and I still saw them opening day. For me, this isn't like Star Wars. Getting down to it, Star Wars fans have 3 films - that's it - that their whole fandom has been based on. Sure there have been books, card games, video games, the "new" trilogy, and even Clone Wars -- how long did it take for Star Wars to finally spawn a television series, animated no less? Star Wars is great in its own right - and sure, it's probably made more money, but it can't compete with the pantheon of material from which Star Trek fandom has flourished. Star Trek as a franchise in terms of sheer content generated it gi-normous.
I don't envy Abrams in his task, as new fans and old fans alike expect the world on a gold platter with this new film. If he delivers it, we can expect Star Trek to be forever changed. If he does it, it's probably changed for the better. Gone are the golden days of old. The last 20 years of Trek have simply served as a bridge from TOS to now, which ironically could be considered full-circle. Anyway, I choose to be cautiously optimistic and look forward to seeing what this new Trek has to offer. I'm cautious only because part of what makes me a deeply invested, life-long Trek fan feels threatened by this new make over. If I feel that way, I can only imagine how Kevin feels. That said, there's no sense in resisting. Ultimately you'll either end up limiting yourself to a finite number of possibilities where enjoying Trek is considered, or, take some good ol' IDIC medicine, give Abrams a chance and open yourself up to infinite diversity in infinite combinations.
Oh, and hi. I still watch what all of you are doing here... don't forget that.

PS- How about the "new" Syfy Network? Does anyone else want to punch one of these folks in the face or what?

Nice return, Jeron.I concur with your assessment of the shows: In fact, I did tune in every week to watch the new Enterprise episodes as they aired--even if it took me time to fully enjoy it; and yes, that show was just getting it's sea-legs when it got axed.
Nothing I've seen or heard in the new trailers for Star Trek has led me to believe that what J.J. Abrams has done is in the wrong. Visually, it looks stunning (the lens flares are a nice touch) and what ILM has done will likely top anything else they've worked on to date (I still hold Return Of The Jedi as their first-rate effects showcase). Anyone who knows Star Trek on par with the devotion Jeron and I have poured into that franchise can see the brilliant subtleties that Chris Pine has put into his Kirk (and this is only from a few quick snippets!) that mirror and improve William Shatner's work as the Captain: From the glare, to his line deliveries, and even the swagger (look at him reach the horizon from the ice pit on Delta Vega!). My only concern now is the score, and there's a part of me that still wants Paul McGillion in the role of Scotty (just watch him on Stargate: Atlantis and you'll be sold).

I think Sean and Jeron should fly to PDX and see it with me and my motley crew Opening Day!I remember when my dad took me to see "The Voyage Home". It was just me, my dad and an old lady in the theatre. I was floored. And everyone loves those whales

I never really got into the shows on TV every weel till Voyager and Enterprise. I've seen plenty of TNG and like it. DS9, is always on my list.
Sometimes, something we know and love needs to be reinvented to accommodate for the times in which we live. And for many SciFi fans, Trek is it.
I'm excited to see what JJ brings. The visual look is awesome, the action looks to be hands down awesome and the actors are spot on.
Happy Hunting! I for one am excited!
Bring it on!

Actually, that piece from the official site - listening right now - sounds quite good!
It's very refreshing to hear something like this in a recent action/adventure film. It's neither the cheap RC way, nor an overly artsy attempt at "trying something new", just straight forward, good music.
It isn't much of a recognisable theme in the Goldsmith sense, but I think a main theme will be heard in other, better, incarnations.posted 03-16-2009 05:18 PM PT (US)

Incarnations: Hopefully with better and not cheap percussion, the worst part about that piece.
That piece or variation on the theme is uninteresting when you compare it to the caliber of the other Trek scores. It just doesn't cut it. Something more robust and memorable is the order required for this film; "straight forward" and "good" will not do Trek justice.
By the way, what, in your opinion, are some examples of "overly artsy attempt[s]" at film music nowadays?

Pretentious is the better word. Elevating something to more than it can or should be.
There are more than enough examples. The three last Academy Award winners come to mind instantly.

I don't think you can, it's quite effective. If you care about the Academy Awards at all, than I can see being upset, but if you're sane and see the Awards for what they are, than it doesn't matter who "wins" or "loses," since the show itself is vacuous.

I must admit...hopefully without fear of slander...that Season 3 of Enterprise is my favorite amongst all of the shows. I am one of the few who must burden the shame of not watching the show while it aired (after Season 1)...I'm sure one of many...which led to its demise. It was only when I bought all four seasons and rediscovered the show that I found the merit. My wife and I burned up those Season 3 episodes so fast it was amazing. I was disappointed in myself after the fact when the show ended.
Thus, I view any Trek incarnation with an open mind and fine things to like, even in mediocre outings (such as Nemesis.) Thus, I look forward to this new Trek...and I cannot help but watch the latest trailer every other day and get more and more amped up.
Hopefull I am not setting myself up. Don't think so.

Okay, so here we are, a little over 50 days out. The work is done on the picture aside from promotions. The scoring is done.Filmtracks.com had a post of the track titles on the soundtrack which were later removed - note that there are HEAVY SPOILERS in the track listings.
What I didn't get out of that material was a label nor release date, let alone artwork, etc.
All of this will likely unfold soon enough, but I must admit I'm anxious to see this information put forth.

I'm sure we'll hear more later this month.I'd guess Varese? They did MI 3 for JJ, Michael and Paramount.

I'm thinking Concord Records, they released the last two major scores for Paramount: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull & The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.Varese wouldn't be bad, and seems an incumbent, but... you never know. If this were 20 years ago, I'd have said MCA or Sony. For all we know it'll end up on WB.

The track listing is a fake, from what I've heard.
But I definately want to see (and hear) the movie and it's score.

I suspected as much, and I truly hope for those who read them, that the track titles and times were fake.

I liked the ending of BSg very much, but I'm glad the show is done because it was exhausting to watch people go through that much hell. Bear McCreary's work was pretty damn good, but I can't say I'll be buying it.My money's tied up with the release of the score for Star Trek by Michael Giacchino, available from Varese Sarabande on May 5th, and before that, X-Men Origins: Wolverine by Harry Gregson-Williams, same label, April 28th. As itemized in another thread recently posted.

Shame on the international marketing team for leaving off Karl Urban. The trio of Kirk, Spock and McCoy still better have some level of synergy and focus.

So, Star Trek premiered and I'm having trouble finding any commentary on the music... Only that the end credit piece is good. Anyone having any luck finding anything about how the score played out? Worrisome.

Not critics, but general audience comments; I share the same opinion on critics (as you) who have nothing or little to nothing substantial to say/write anything about a film's technical aspects (a good example is that s.h.i.t.-rag Empire which has not one word/sentence devoted to the score).
