I just don't think this score is at the sam level s those other westerns you mention at the end of your review--in fact, I think this isn't even at the top in the genre of those from this composer---my personal favorites being 100 Rifles and Rio Conchos....

Well I suppose you could say it's not at the same level because it has a different quality than those other Westerns. Certainly 100 Rifles and Rio Conchos are more "catchy" as far as their themes and the rip-roaring action in them, but you could also argue there is more soul and emotion in this one.

I don't see myself always picking up Lonely Are The Brave when I feel like listening to a Goldsmith western, but at the same time I don't see myself always picking up 100 Rifles, Rio Conchos, or Bandoleros (although its one of my faves). The reason is they all have something different and unique within that certain score to offer. I completely understand how someone would enjoy some other Westerns above this one, after all it sounds awfully lonely, but it still satisfies as a darker and more dramatic Western score.

As for the review, Tom, I think you've represented the score very well in your description, especially the influence of Jerome Moross, which to be honest I hadn't considered before, as the obvious shadow of Aaron Copland always drew my attention.

One of my favorite moments in the score is during one of the action cues toward the end when a stirring rendition of the main theme is joined in by a brass figure from Jerry's theme from The Loner. It's just a great moment.

We're all entitled to our opinion and I'm especially glad that we're at least taking the time to discuss it. I'm just sorry it has been a while since I've seen the film. If this score were re-recorded with a larger orchestra (symphony size) think of the sound. As Al said lots of emotion and a pretty theme.

I like all of his western scores about the same and as Al said there, that's one of the reasons I always liked Goldsmith so well. He was so varied in his approach. I also liked the reuse of Flim Flam Man, on a slower cadence, for Culpepper Cattle Co. and I like Wild Rovers a lot even though its very Copland sounding. Another one that is like that is The Man, a little seen movie originally made for TV, but then released at the movies afterall. It has that Copland sound also.

FYI: there's now less than 50 copies of this wonderful score at Varese.
