I am posting this topic in anticipation of the release of Episode I on VHS. What are your top 5 all-time favorite Star Wars moments, spanning all the animation, tv specials, and all four movies? Here are mine:

    1) Boba Fett's first appearance in the Star Wars Holiday Special.
    2) The Tie Fighter's colliding into each other during the finale of the Asteroid Sequence in Empire Strikes Back.
    3) The newly re-vamped Bespin Cloud City sequences in Empire Strikes Back.
    4) When the Falcon zooms out of that little hole in the Deathstar with flames spewing out all over the place, Lando goes "YAAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" I LOVE THAT SCENE. It gets me everytime I see it! It's sooo slick!
    5) The first battle with Darth Mahl on Tatooine, when the heroes escape and he shuts off his lightsaber. Made me cheer in the theatre.

Well that's it for me. What about you guys?

    1) Han being forzen in carbonite (one of the creeper parts of the trilogy, but one of the best-constructed sequences - great cinematography)
    2) The Battle of Hoth
    3) the TIE Fight attack the Falcon escapes from the Death Star
    4) "I am you father." ('nuff said)
    5) the battle above the sarlac pit

    3. The first Death Star battle
    4. Vader's first appearance in Empire
    5. The Emporer's arrival in ROTJ
    6. Luke and Vader's duel from Empire
    7. Darth Maul's appearances (pick any of em, he was a bad ass!!)
    8. The final duel with Vader and Luke when Luke snaps and goes med-evil on Darth

    Here we go...

    1. Destruction of the Death Star (both of them).
    2. The flight through the asteroid belt in ESB.
    3. The Throne Room battle between Luke and Vader in ROTJ.
    4. When Luke tells Leia she's his brother.
    5. The opening sequence - you know.

I can't pick anything from the television specials, because I've never seen them.

Also, I won't pick anything from TPM, mainly due to the fact that I really didn't like the movie that much.

I think I shall list them in terms of music.

    1. The Dark Side Beckons (ROTJ)
    2. Burning Homestead (ANH)
    3. The Executor arrives at Hoth (ESB)
    4. Ben's final words to Luke before we cut to the Rebel fleet (ROTJ)
    5. The Emperor's Death (ROTJ)

There's a pattern here ... ROTJ may have been the "least" of the original trilogy in terms of script, directing, pace, score, etc ... but it's made up of such great *moments*! I gotta love it!

The duel lightsabre battle from TPM

I was blown away by that.... GREAT choreography.

I am surprised no one mentioned, The Emperor getting his just rewards at the end of Return of the Jedi. Or how about Darth Vader getting his own hand cut off, talk about some pay back. And last, Darth Maul, getting sliced and diced during the finale of TPM.

Those are some of the high points. However let me just say, as an Star Wars fanboy, I like all the scenes of every film.

I don't mean to be nitpicky, but the Executor never arrives at Hoth...(if it had, the Rebels would have had a much worse time evacuating....)

    Lancelot,

Sorry, but watch 'Empire' again and you'll see that the Executor does arrive at Hoth. Admiral Ozzel was in command of the Super Star Destroyer and he got strangled for "coming out of light speed too close to the system."

    Favorite Star Wars Moments:

1.) Every shot, every sequence, every line.

(I can't narrow them down to 5. Just too many.)

    1. when luke stares at the twin suns and we hear that overwhelming rendition of the force theme.
    2. when Vader turns and picks up the emperor

    5. Vader's funeral pyre

1.) The final Vader/Luke duel (the music! the music!)
    2.) Battle at Yavin
3.) The final light saber fight sequence in Ep. 1
    4.) "I am your father"
5.) ...I'm sure it's one of the droid sequences, but I can't think of any right now...

    Honorable mentions (musically):
    The Cantina Band
    Binary Sunset
When Vader first appears in the Rebel bunker on Hoth

Re Vader's funeral pire: I like the alternate version score track much better.

    5) When the Snowspeeders search for Luke and Han (Too bad they never got the music for this sequence right on any of the score releases)
    4) In the Cantina where we first meet Han Solo, he was such a bad ass.
    3) The second dual with Darth Maul
    2) When Boba Fett follows the Millenium Falcon after the Star Destroyer dumps the trash (The first time we hear Fett's motif)
    1) The entire flight through the asteroid field (Some of the best music from all four movies)

The two worst moments in Star Wars were when Boba Fett and Darth Maul die. Although I refuse to believe either one of them is actually dead, just out of the running for a while.

If I'm not suffering from heavy brain defects, the short piece of music played during that sequence is lifted directly from the "Rescue from Cloud City/Hyperspace" track at the end of CD2 of the score. It is also annoyingly played when the Rebel starships enter Death Star II in ROTJ. In fact, when I first saw this scene with the music in mind, I was distracted, because I had to think where that music originally comes from. Call it the "Horner" effect, if you will.

NP: Nothing, trying to extract the "Alien" isolated score to a wav file.

Guess you don't know that Boba Fett is still alive and well, living the typical space bounty hunter life in the comic books. Last I saw of him, he had caught up with Han and Leia in the "Dark Empire" (?) comic series. He's even got a new ship, and he's also running around with IG-88. As the story goes, the Sarlac found his suit armor to be indigestable, and so Fett was spit out. In fact, I think in "Tales of the Bounty Hunters" (or one of thos anthology books), there's a Fett story that opens with his escape from Sarlac. He returns moments later in his new ship, hovers over the Pit of Carkoon, and flares his engines straight into the Sarlac!

This is absolutely impossible, which is why I've avoided the thread for so long. Off the top of my head:

A NEW HOPE: the walls converge, and then stop converging ("WAHOOO!" "Oh, Artoo, they're dying!" Luke reads the code off the wall ... I can't tell you what that sequence did to me as an eight-year-old, and still does to me now. I wish a single moment in THE PHANTOM MENACE had that kind of spontaneity and clarity.)

A NEW HOPE: "It was a boring conversation anyway -- LUKE, WE GOT COMPANY!" (Quickly followed by Luke cocking his head, still enhelmeted, and Leia observing "Aren't you a little SHORT for a stormtrooper?")

A NEW HOPE: in swoops the Millennium Falcon to save the day.

A NEW HOPE (original version only) The X-wings preparing for their assault on the Death Star, and their wings unfolding just like so. (Lucas jazzed it up for the Other Version, but I think it was better the first time.)

A NEW HOPE: the Throne Room sequence.

(Bonus A NEW HOPE Special Edition addendum: that strange dinosaur-like thing rearing on its hind legs in the midst of Mos Eisley.)

Oh, you meant five greatest from ALL the STAR WARS movies? (feigning misunderstanding) Well, maybe next time. Even my least favorite of all four to date, RETURN OF THE JEDI, easily has five worthy moments in it. (I won't even start on my favorites from EMPIRE.)

P.S. I wanted to BE Han Solo.

some of mine may be a little less obvious.

    1. Empire, the first time we meet Yoda. I laugh every time.
    2. The Binary Sunset
    3. redemption of Vader in ROTJ
    4. lightsaber fight in TPM, even if you hate the flick you gotta admit that's pretty cool.
    5. the running gag in Empire about the hyperdrive.

Mine are basically from the lightsaber duels in the 4 movies, especially TPM. Here they are in order:

    1. The whole of the duel scene in the power generator
    2. The desert duel
    3. Cloud City duel
    4. Final Jedi duel (I even got the set!)
    5. Obi Wan vs Vader
    Just one more!
    6. Sail Barge Assault

    Marian,

I found out when I bought the Star Wars Anthology box set that the cue used in Empire to accompany the Snow Speeder Search was the track "Hyperspace". I just wish the new 2 disk set of Empire was in film order, not the chopped up order it is in.

    Dantoris,

I actually did know that Boba Fett escaped the Sarlac Pit in the books. I read K. W. Jeter's trilogy of books all about Boba Fett, they were really good. I am not so sure that Lucas would have had Boba Fett escape though.

For anyone who enjoys the post trilogy Star Wars books I definitely recommend this trilogy by K. W. Jeter. It follows Boba Fett after his escape from the Sarlac, and includes all of the well known Bounty Hunters, IG-88, Bossk and Prince Xizor even shows up. The books are called, The Mandalarian Armor, Slave Ship and Hard Merchandise.

Audacity: The album IS in film order, except for the two concert suites at the beginning of CD #2. They just re-used "Hyperspace" at the snow speeder sequence. At least that's what I think, for the albums are supposed to be in the correct order, and this appearance of "Hyperspace" sounds very edited. Probably the sequence was intended to be left unscored, and I even think it might have been better that way - we KNOW they'll find Han and Luke, of course they will, so why build up a tension that isn't here by using this thrilling piece of music?

NP: The Cider House Rules (Rachel Portman, beautiful!)

    Marian,

You could be right about the rest of the cd being in film order, I don't have a good enough ear to tell 100%. But I think it is just the fact that the "Hyperspace" cue when it was used for the Snowspeeder search was one of my favorite parts of Empire so I was a little mad when I found out it was edited in at the last moment. I have the cue Hyperspace now so I am happy about that.

Audacity: I'm not sure if you understood my post completely. The "Hyperspace" cue is at the end of the CD because the "Hyperspace" sequence it was written for is at the end of the movie - the music can be heard there in it's entirety. So it is not edited into the end of the CD, but edited into the "Snowspeeder" sequence, and therefore not included on that part of the CD. And I think it's good that way, because it seems out of place there, anyway.

Sorry to bother you if you DID understand it, and I just wasn't sure.
