This 1953 John Wayne movie -- which boasts an excellent Hugo Friedhofer score -- is not available on video and seems to have disappeared from television, too. I've heard the Wayne estate is holding it back. Anyone know why?

I don't know why the film is being held back (you could call Batjac Productions in Hollywood, they might tell you), but I have always wanted to see this film. William Wellman directed Wayne the same year in The High and the Mighty which was a big hit and yet some critics seem to feel that Island is the better picture. The original 10" had narration. Varese re-issued it on LP without narration, just the score, but like 36 Hours and Master of the World, they never put it out on CD.

Here is an item I found on the net. The article mentions "High and the Mighty" and "Island in the Sky".

Hmmm... That was nearly a year and a half ago. I wonder where they are at now and if they are contemplating DVD releases as well. I hope so.

I found someone with a bootleg copy of IITS who is sending it to me. I'll tell you about it once it shows up and I've seen it.

The tape I was sent was film chained from a pretty beat up 16mm print. I've only watched a few minutes so far. The scoring is good, but I'm already familiar with it from the Varese LP. In B&W and with less apparent soap opera than The High and the Mighty (made the next year with Wayne and the same director), this, so far (it's hard to tell based on just the opening), seems like a much more intense and suspenseful film.
