John Williams recorded a lot of classical music when he was with Phillips, but with Sony Classical he hasn't recorded much classical music. There's some music I would like to own conducted by Williams, like The Ride of the Valkiries by Wagner, The Merry Wives of Windsor Overture by Otto Nicolai, the Williams Tell Overture, and others that Williams has conducted in live performances with the Boston Pops and other orchestras.
I also would like for Phillips to re-release some of those old recording from the 80's like The Planets, the Bernstein CD, etc.posted 10-26-2000 05:40 PM PT (US) Nemo

REALLY!!!

Sinfonia No.5 (Beethoven)

I understand only half of what you're saying. I don't find Williams interpretation of O fortuna on Summon... too exciting.

Actually, I did like John Williams version. But theres an even more exciting version with the Atlanta Symphony, I think. But I do hope Williams records more classical than Broadway. not that I don't like it.

Actually, the only recording of Carmina Burana I really enjoy is Eugen Jochum's classic version for Deutsche Grammophon. That one's spectacular, and even authorized by Carl Orff himself. There are of course lots of recordings I've never heard, but all the others I HAVE heard pale in comparison.

Is that version easy to find?

It's generally considered to be one of the very best, so I don't think it's hard to get. I don't know how Deutsche Grammophon's availibilty is in the US, but you can get their discs everywhere here, and being one of the greatest labels, I don't think it should be much different in the US?The Jochum recording is available as a "Galeria" release, and also on the remastered "Originals" series (both Deutsche Grammophon series). The difference isn't too great, but the "Originals" being the newer one, this should be the one to get.

You can get it here at amazon.com, for example.Perhaps Peter should even add it to the store? It's not film music, but most film music listeners like Carmina Burana, don't they?

Yes, I guess so, but I don´t think I´d buy anything from the internet, the mailing system in Mexico is very crappy...I think they would keep it...NP. Theme from Jurassic Park(John Williams)

Hector, I have that Atlanta SO recording, with the late great Robert Shaw.
Technically, it is flawless in performance and sound.BUT, Robert Shaw's penchant for precision cost him dearly in ambience. The Shaw version is big, but lacks anything resembling emotion, aside from what the music itself contains.

Actually, It was a long time ago when I heard it. It was about a year after Summon the Heroes, and I was impressed with the sound, and one of the things that I liked about it, the sound of the gong, which was better than the Williams version. And in Williams version it was the first time I heard the gong used in "O Fortuna". This version was the first time I heard the entire piece(approx 67 min.). And I´m not sure if it was indeed the ASO.NP. Duel of the Fates(Williams)
