Not much new here it seems... Here's what I picked up lately and have been too lazy to report earlier:- Carl Orff: Trionfi (Franz Welser-Möst and various) - has Carmina Burana, Catulli Carmina and Trionfo di Afrodite. I got it for Catulli, which are really good indeed. In fact, the Burana seems to be really good too, but it's not a match for the Jochum by far; I haven't even listened to the whole thing yet.
- Erich Wolfgang Korngold: Between Two Worlds / Symphonic Serenade / Theme and Variations (John Mauceri and two different German orchestras) - good music, some of it very good, nice performances, good sound.

- Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! (The Rolling Stones) - ok, so this doesn't really belong on this board, but it doesn't belong on the score board either. This is my third hybrid SACD now (don't have an SACD player), and all three are Stones CDs.

Got last Thursday:[list]
- Brilliant Classics (99934/1-4): Rimsky-Korsakov: Orchestral Works.
Philharmonia Orchestra & LSO/Butt
Armenian Philharmonic/Tjeknavorian
Really budget 4-CD set of R-K concert works, including the three symphonies, a Scheherazade, and opera suites, all licensed from the ASV label.
Is it good? No. For one, the recordings range over 13 years, different orchestras, venues, conductors... So the whole thing is incoherent. Then there are the performances themselves. The LSO does best, the Philharmonia plays well but doesn't seem to care about the music, the Armenians do their best but lack the finish of a truly first rate orchestra. Interpretations are uneven. Butt does best with the short works and Sym. #3, but screws up in Sym 1 & 2, where Anichanov (Naxos) did a lot better.- Warner Apex (2 89085): Dvorak - Symphony # 9
Kurt Masur/New York Philharmonic
A not too bad Dvorak #9. Louder passages are rougher and more angular, while softer moments are more fluid. Good sound, especially in the strings and percussion. Not the best, but satisfying enough for the price.posted 02-22-2003 05:50 PM PT (US) Old Infopop Software by UBB
